Offbeat Go Bag Recommendations

So, I’ve read a lot of articles online about various types of recommendations for go bags. Many of them expect you to want to make your go bag easy to hide, often with a military look.
I am kind of looking for the opposite of that. I live in a city, and having a backpack that looks like the stereotypical “prepper bag“ is probably more risky! In addition, well, I want it to be comfortable, I am far more likely as a person with disabilities to be bugging in rather than bugging out - or at least, I doubt I will be going far.
So, what I am looking for is a bag that is brightly colored, so it would be easy to find in case of an earthquake. I would like something between 40-50L, and the more it looks like a kid’s backpack, the better. To give you an idea, my current apartment bag is shaped like a cat mermaid and only has one pocket – I have another bags worth of stuff in my car in Ziplocs, easy to pull out and shove into a bag if needed. I would like something that straddles a more practical line between this incredibly simplistic bag that I have now, and the canvas military bag that is so often recommended!
Any ideas? Anything in particular I should be looking for? Weatherproofing seems like an especially good idea, so I’m wondering if maybe a backpacking bag is more what I’m looking for?

Did you consider possibility of using different colour rain covers for backpack? You may change your (yours backpack) appearance from military look to whatever different several times in an hour. And you'll got extra weatherproofing. ;)

Great idea

Yeah, I saw that suggestion up top, and it’s brilliant!

Get whatever bag that you like the most. It won't matter if it looks like a tactical bag or a hiking bag.
Get two different pack covers - one bright colored and one subdued color. One for being seen and the other not.
The pack cover will hide or disguise whatever type of bag you have. It will also keep close anything that you might have hanging off the bag.
The-Mond@reddit
I have a similar idea with my bags.
A neutral color cover and I keep a roll of yellow caution tape and/or bright neon orange hunter trail tape in an easily accessible pocket.
I also keep a old wire hanger with the bag that, among its many uses, can also be attached to the top of the bag/pack and extended a foot or so above my shoulders/head with the colored tape attached to the top of the wire as kind of a flag.
This might allow for being more easily seen/identified in the event of an evacuation on foot amongst a large group of people - especially if separated in the crowd. The same thing can be done on your evacuating vehicles.
You might even be able to attach a glow stick or LED light at night for visibility. Of course, all this assumes you actually want to be seen/found.

Oh, this is an incredibly smart idea! Thank you!

I personally have a laptop bag, just filled with my go bag stuff. No one else stares at a mid-30's IT person with normal clothes and a laptop bag.

I’m a bit picky on packs due to past back problems, and don’t want to return there.
For a long time I was using Osprey or similar backpacking packs daily.
But nowdays I use a 511tactical backpack. I think the one I use isn’t there any more, but they have a whole line of functional but not overtly tactical stuff. Like there’s no external molle and the colors are neutral blues, grays, etc.
As for brightly colored to find it — when traveling, we have some bright colored things we attach to all our bags and packs, and it’s the same for our family. So we can easily identify not only where it is, but also uniquely identify it. For suitcases, I put it on the carry handle so others won’t accidentally grab it.
on one flight in the past, I had an identical suitcase to someone else, and they accidentally grabbed mine from the overhead bin. They had already de boarded and run off to catch another flight and I realized immediately when the same case but not mine was in the adjacent compartment. So I’m more careful with marking now. That time I had a marker but not on the carry handle, so in a hurry they didn’t even see it.
It turned out we were both going to the same destination on separate flights, but our gates were adjacent. My flight was able to tell me where it was and they did an announcement and we met at the target gate to swap.

Osprey all day

I have a Recycled Firefighter 24 hour pack that I use as my work bag/non descript bag. It does not have any external molle and they sell a hook and loop panel with organization/packing cubes for the interior for additional organization. I have a second black hook and loop panel that I use to keep a molle water bottle holder and first aid kit as part of my work bag edc. They also sell some earth tone and bright color versions of their bags.
For some sort of event where i would need to leave my car, I can pair it with my bail-out bag which is a maxpedition versipack which has other "does not go in the office" items, and other small items in the car that are grab and go/non work essentials.

I did backpacking packs for my better half and I. They are comfortable and have good capacity, my only gripe being that the opening to get to everything is on the top which makes getting to stuff on the bottom a bit more of a hassle. I do have everything organized into colored zipper pouches though so it’s fairly easy to dig around to find the color that matches what I need.
I do think anyone with a backpack would be a target after an event just because of the perception of having supplies so I think it’s important to keep that in mind. Initially you may fly under the radar with a normal looking pack, but after a couple days it won’t matter.
hope-luminescence@reddit
I wouldn't worry too much about it. All kinds of bags are fairly common these days, and vaguely military aesthetics are not at all rare.
0veron@reddit
I am totally with you, in the normalcy of my get home bag. I have a Nixon roll top with me at all times. Looks like a standard back pack but due to the roll top has some flexibility and can increase or decrease in volume fairly easily. I’m not as worried about the bag but as what I have in the bag. The contents are far more relevant. IMO consider things like the furthest you would need to travel, how far you can go each day and then figure out roughly how much you would need to carry in terms of food and water. Being in the city I would also consider if the environment would be permissive or not as that may change how you travel and what you use as a food source. Plenty of great resources out there as well as this community. The fact that you are asking means you’re already ahead of most. Best of luck!

I dunno, I just always recommend Kelty Redwings, and now they have brighter colors. They’re a great value, and proven.
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
That was definitely on my shortlist!
VegaStyles@reddit
The Roark passenger and Mule are all i really use. The dont look militant and are comfortable and durable. I have 11 passenger and 4 mule. I also use the solgaard artemis. I prefer the passenger tho. The one roark ive hiked with almost every single weekend since i got it is still going strong.
Brave_Quality_4135@reddit
I have those Mylar survival blankets in my go bag. One side is camo and the other is silver. I figure if I need to hide a pack in the woods, I’ll just wrap it up camo-side out. If I need it to be found, shiny-side up. You could use whatever pack you want, but most kids packs don’t have waist straps. I’d get a waist strap and a frame if possible.
jazzbiscuit@reddit
You can get “tactical” style backpacks in just about any color - pink, teal, neon green…. That look is about as non-prepperish as you can possibly get & still gets you all the functionality. Added bonus for a dark cover to put over it when you don’t want to shout “here I am!!”.
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I think that’s a great idea, I like the versatility
nerdstim@reddit
Your principle tactic is called the Grey man look. You blend in and become an unattractive target The bag makes little difference! The way you carry yourself and appear sends a message to would be attackers. Your path of going place to place and time makes a difference as well.
Remember the longer the SHTF is prolonged the more desperate the would be attackers will become.
Become armed, vilagent.
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
One of the main reasons I don’t want a military looking bag is I don’t want people to think that I’m armed, and therefore have guns and ammo worth attacking me for!
dittybopper_05H@reddit
Think about that for a minute from the perspective of the potential attacker.
Do you want to attack someone you think is armed and competent in the use of arms?
Or to put it another way, are you congenitally stupid and/or have a death wish?
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
In the area I live in, a military backpack is more likely to get stolen because people expect that the stuff in there is going to be worth something, over a bag that looks like a kids backpack. 🤷🏻♀️ I appreciate you’re trying to help, and I get what you’re saying, but I know what I’m asking about. I have thought about this a lot, and I want recommendations on the thing I asked for recommendations on. Thanks!
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
(And yes, I live in an area where unregistered guns and ammo would be a liability for me, which is why I don’t want to look like somebody who has those things)
dittybopper_05H@reddit
Move.
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
That isn’t helpful. But thanks anyway!
nerdstim@reddit
So you want to devalue my comments. That's fine. You apparently cant handle the truth. I won't help or post any longer. This why reddit sucks.
nanneryeeter@reddit
You need a break from this place if a single down vote bothers you.
Prepper-Pup@reddit
Personally, I just went with military surplus.
maimauw867@reddit
Prediction you will fill all available space in your bag, 50l gives about 15 kilograms or more. Carrying this for more than one hour for a non trained person in low quality bag will start to hurt. Get something you are realistically are able to carry.
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
This is a good point, I do not intend to fill the bag all the way, or at least not with heavy things. I plan on keeping a flannel in there, and that’s kind of bulky.
Formal_Pension_9456@reddit
One thing I learned about hiking in the service is get something comfortable.
Also a backpack to your size specifications is going to be a hiking/military type. You can’t get a colorful hiking backpack but It’ll be too big to pass off as a kids backpack.
3goblintrenchcoat@reddit (OP)
That’s OK! I wanna upgrade from a kids’s backpack, in part because I know it won’t be comfortable for long time wear.
Bad_Corsair@reddit
I have used this one in the past and is pretty comfortable and is a 40 L bag.

Jansport bags brend well. There's always a guitar or tennis bag.

I use messenger bags. Sturdy and inconspicuous

Diaper bag or food delivery would be grey man stuff.
Chaos_Goblin_7007@reddit
I have a old Osprey 60 liter that is pinkish (thrift store find). I have taken it hiking and it looks like hell, but it has great support (padded arms and hip belt). I don’t flashy items outside the bag for anyone to take notice. Im hoping that even though the color is a bit odd, it looks like Im poor with nothing to offer.
Aggressive_Wrangler7@reddit
I had a similar thought to this and started looking for a child’s hiking bag.
Ashamed_Tree_5668@reddit
There is a brand called topo designs, they use bright colours. The advice I’ve always heard about military bags is that you don’t want to look like you are prepared so nobody will look twice at you and you can slip away quietly without being noticed.
dittybopper_05H@reddit
I question that, though. Using military surplus has been a thing since just after WWII. I’ve worked in higher ed for about 25 years now, and it’s not unusual to see someone with a military looking backpack on campus. I also see people wearing them off campus.
Also, as I’ve pointed out many times, the kind of “Grey Man” approach you espouse isn’t always appropriate. It can actually be counterproductive because it makes you look like an easy target. The “Grey Man” philosophy started in intelligence work, where it’s true that you do indeed want to blend in with the crowd and be very forgettable. The flashy James Bond types don’t last but the bland Bob Smith types do.
But you’re not going to be a spy. You’re not going to be worried about whether the KGB or Stasi notice you or not. You’re going to be worried about the thug who wants to take your stuff. He doesn’t care if the bag it’s in is MOLLE, ALICE, or Hello Kitty.
You don’t avoid those characters by looking like the meek and mild everyday Joe with his head down, that just makes you a more attractive target. Thugs don’t rob people who look like they can handle themselves. They go for the easy targets. The idea that they’d selectively target people who look like they might have combat experience based upon their clothing and accessories because they have “the good stuff” is ludicrous on its face and goes against decades of criminal research.
There are two concepts from biology that are helpful here.
The first is aposematism. This is honestly signalling that you are dangerous and should not be messed with. Examples of this are the poison dart frog and the coral snake. They are brightly colored instead of camouflaged as a warning.
The other is Batesian mimicry. This is where you look like a bad-ass when in fact you aren’t. The canonical example is the milk snake, a non-venomous snake which mimic the color scheme of the venomous coral snake. At least close enough to ward off potential predators.
If you’ve got a salty looking bag on your back and you look observant and alert, are reasonably fit, and have a certain kind of style when it comes to haircuts and facial hair, you’re less likely to be a target.
I know this goes against the received wisdom of the prepper world, but I want to reiterate that the “Grey Man” concept is about spies not attracting attention from government forces or those who would report them to the government.
THIS IS NOT A REALISTIC PREPPING SCENARIO.
A more realistic scenario is that you need to worry about people taking your stuff by force in the chaos after a natural or man-made disaster.

I like to shop for bags at thrift stores. I also like the earth pak 35l dry bags.
Tinman5278@reddit
This is the way. Thrift shops and 2nd hand sporting goods stores (like Play it Again) have shelves of lightly used packs in all colors and sizes. Wander through. See what they've got.
JamesSmith1200@reddit
Best bet is to go to REI and have them fit you for a hiking day pack. A pack that’s the right size and fit will be much more comfortable if you have to walk a few miles.
And most hiking day packs will look like simple backpacks that people carry everyday and less like kitted out military bags.
Brieundscotch@reddit
Did you consider possibility of using different colour rain covers for backpack? You may change your (yours backpack) appearance from military look to whatever different several times in an hour.😉
Familiar-Anything853@reddit
Jansport has neon yellow/green colors. I would go with that.

40-50L is more the size of an INCH bag rather than a go bag or get home bag. For my get home bag I just grabbed a hiking pack at Walmart. I have a secondary that I got at goodwill. My get home bags are set up pretty light, almost ultralight, because my longest trip is only about 20 miles the longest way.
