When I worked construction, I used a belt loop for my hammer and used the loop on the pants to hold the handle so it wasn't swinging around when I walked.

When I was involved with my schools construction theater program, the fact that carpenter pants and shorts were in style was super helpful considering I frequently had a hammer and tape measure on me for hours after school each day. Functional and stylish!
