If it makes you feel better, its been reviewed pretty well everywhere else. It seems like no matter what they do, they're going to upset people for some reason. Doom 2016 was too slow for some. Doom eternal was too fast for some. Doom TDA is supposed to be a good mix between the two, and people still complain.
People think the new Dooms have nice graphics only because of the futuristic gun that takes up 25% of the screen and is the classic nonensical uninspired chiseled block of shiny metal and uselees made up mechanisms.
EVERYTHING looks made of plastic in Idtech6. Everything.
From doomguy's body, armor, even flesh, to enemies and environments.
The "flames" and lava effects are particularly bad. Lava in the new Doom games legit looks like something out of a pre 2010 game. Just tubest of glowing plastic.
And the color palette and enemies design is atrocious. Glowing blinking neon lights everywhere.
Let's not even talk about the gameplay and the "doom of current year" gimmick they build the entire game around, be in the grapplig hook or the shield or whatever brainless shit.
A mix of quick time events, and cycling trough powerups and abilities like in your average Overwatch clones.
Doom 2016 kept a good balance story wise sorta outside of a few moments like waiting for olivia pierce to open hellgate for no reason and not ripping her to shreds through the glass panel lol.
The lore is goofy as shit and the fact you play buddies with the villian that betrayed you a game prior thinking he won't do it again (he did) is retarded.
Go watch Gmanlives video. It really shows the problems with the new doom. The repetition of blocking cyber demons kicks over and over again is so stupid
I played new Doom games for years, then Ultrakill, now I'm going back to Doom and I honestly find it so boring now:
By far the worst - Doom forces you to approach enemies a certain way. Shotgun green shield, otherwise he is indestructible. Parry that guy or you won't deal damage. Keep your distance, but not too much or too little because that will bait the wrong move. This shit sucks, and kills creative freedom in fighting.
Ammo management is so boring. You have to stop to use chainsaw every 30 secs. You cannot use your favorite guns too much. This breaks the pacing do the fight for me.
The movement is so slow and clunky,
Most weapons have the accuracy of a blunderbuss and switching them takes way too long.
I still consider Doom great games, but it does feel like Ultrakill solved some of the problems Doom is still struggling with.
I don’t play Doom games for the plot, but 2016 definitely had a better and much more subtly told story than Eternal. Eternal excels in gameplay - there are specific tactical advantages to using this weapon or that in a lot of situations, and the grappling hook (which you can upgrade so it’s on fire when you shoot it into enemies) is a blast.
I think the main strength of 2016's story was that they leaned into the player not giving a shit about the story by having Doomguy openly and violently give zero fucks about the story or anyone's agenda outside of 'kill more demons." He spends the first half of the game just trolling Hayden every time the guy tries to tell what or what not to do.
Eternal went a completely different direction of "there is a serious story now, but it's so stupidly over the top and absurd that it loops around to not being very serious again" which was okay but imo did not land as cathartically as just having Doomguy pissing off every other character who actually gave a shit about what was happening.
Except Doomguy did care in 2016 already. In the opening Hayden talks about how there were some sacrifices, but it was worthwhile and necessary, and Doomguy looks down at a corpse in the elevator then punches the monitor. That's not "Shut up, I don't care", that's anger over how callous Hayden is about human life.
Yeah I don't disagree with that at all but my point was more in regard to Doomguy being conpletely uninterested in the details of things. He doesn't care about argent energy or the resource crisis or Hayden's good intentions, he's just there to fix the demon problem as effeciently as possible. The only lore they added about Doomguy was "he's a badass who butchered so many demons in Hell that they're scared shitless of him now."
Whereas in Eternal they tied the Doom Slayer lore so heavily to all the new lore bits like the hell priests and the khan maker and AngelHayden ect. that they couldn't really pull off the same vibe of "lol Doomguy doesn't care about the plot" because he now has a 50 page long backstory personally connecting him to all this stuff.
Doom 2016 was the last good Doom and the best part was that even the character hated the fantasy crap and just wanted to kill things. Eternal puts the lore crap in your face and you cant get away from it which pushed me away from the series too.
What? Lovecraft is ancient Gods interacting with frivolous things like villages and cults, while in Doom there is a colonization of Mars that ends up with tech demon lords lauching an invasion of demons with canons for arms. Doom is WAY more high fantasy than lovecraftian gods
Was there any doubt the music would be shit after it was revealed how bad they fucked over Mick Gordon? They did the same shit to Jeremy Soule so the music in the next Elder Scrolls will be guaranteed shit too.

I didn't like it, it was too arcade-y. It's not really how 1, 2, and 3 felt.

That’s a fair criticism. I felt that way about a good bit of Doom Eternal

I don't agree with that.
Being shot out of a cannon into a planet was quite the logical thing to do if you ask me. And hell doesn't learn what fear is by itself.
