It's a game... you may be too young to remember but we used to get features in our games for fun. Extra content, variations, and customization that didn't cost any additional money.
You know that Valve also has a market where you can just buy whatever you want right? Lemme know when all the other companies doing loot boxes start doing that.
No one forces you to support companies that do it. I simply don't play games with bad lootboxes or items all tied behind "premium" battle passes. Blame the company for doing it and the idiots who support it.
Basic customization was already a paid deal before loot boxes gained traction. I'm not defending them but getting nickel and dimed is really just part of life unfortunately.
The problem is that they are literally a slot machine in a game people under 21 can play. I have friends who would spend their entire paychecks on lootboxes in cs trying to get knives to sell for more money while we were still in high school. If you don't think that's predatory I don't know what to tell you. It's like telling a gambling addict "just stop gambling".
There is a clear difference between the different types of lootboxes
Cs2 lootboxes are vastly different to say fifa ultimate lootboxes, saying that its hypocritical to be outraged over other games lootboxes and not cs2 while ignoring the difference in what you GET out of them is hypocrisy itself
Cs2 opened a way for lootboxes, because there's no way people would've accepted full-blown pay-to-win back at the time. But when respected and loved company decided to use it's reputation to introduce supposedly safe gambling practice, Overton window has shifted and people started only being outraged at idea of pay-to-win gambling, not at gambling itself.
Also, what's the difference at what you get? You get digital game items that have no real-world value. Entertainment is subjective. People get entertainment out of having unique looks in a damn multilayer game. It's the same part of gaming expirience, just like gameplay, story soundtrack etc, so difference between CS2 cases and fifa lootboxes is not fundamental, as games don't have inherent value other than enjoying it. So it's just levels of shit.
There is the difference, CS items do hold real life value since they are tradeable and they are often worth a lot of money based on their visual characteristics such as float value and pattern index. Now as for whether that's a good or bad thing is up to each person to decide. The items having real value does make it even closer to gambling and it's not unheard of to have people chasing knives worth 5 figures to recoup losses. For reference, the knife from the image is a 1/1 and it had an offer made of either 1.2 or 1.5 million USD, which was declined by the Chinese collector that has it atm.
You get gambling in games. I didn’t say shit about hypocrisy I said everyone sucks off valve for it. As you are so kindly demonstrating. Either you’re illiterate or just like propping up a straw man to knock down by putting words in my mouth.
If they did, they risk them getting dangerous ideas of democracy and freedom. So being in living in a unstable financial situation will distract them from the real issue.

Slums? No, you mean something out of rio? Well, inmigrants still live there so they also have rights obviusly. I am glad that the Karbala system is being dismantled, but until its done i dont think i am going to cease denouncing it. I'm not saying immigrants don't have rights, of course they do. They're not technically slaves. They are paid, but often times the employer will hold onto their passport and refuse to give it back if a worker wants to leave the country. The Saudis do this with a lot of professions. I've read news stories about Healthcare workers having this happen to them a lot. This is what the Qataris did when they were constructing the facilities for the last world cup. Deplorable working and living conditions, and they couldn't leave if they wanted to quit. They were slaves in ever imaginable aspect except for the fact that they were paid. So, technically, they weren't slaves.
The richest Arab countries don't have a working class, they import foreigners who work slave level hours for surprisingly alright pay that's tax free. There's a reason foreigners willingly go work at UAE, they're so rich their citizens get paid just for existing so most of them don't even bother studying.
They do sell, and if i remember correctly, there is a knife in cs with a buggy name, and the owner got an offer for 1 million or more and didn't want to sell it, so yea...
me and a buddy (before he passed) were early into using btc for "substances" and at that point they were under a dollar a piece. I still remember us being frustrated when it passed 2 dollars per.....we had roughly 4-500 btc. that wallet and password left with him. sad shit
Lol. It does get crazy. During the NFT craze, there were mfers turning down multi million dollar OFFERS. You can find a few twitter posts from that era, it was a wild time.
I'm pretty sure you're confusing the no-star Karambit and the offer for the blue gem Karambit. The blue gem Karam in the image received an offer of $1.2m. The no-star (not bugged, simply created with an incorrect title and values) Karam hasn't received any offers in recent memory.
This Karambit in the image received a legitimate offer of $1.2 million. The owner declined. They do not sell frequently at all. The largest sale I can recall was a bundle for $500k for the same knife in the image, but in worse quality, and a Case Hardened Pattern 661 blue gem AK-47 with four of the rarest stickers in the game applied.
2 million now, it's an one of one item, I know it looks stupid from the perspective of someone that's not into cs skins but it's really worth that price, there are stickers that are so rare and sought after you could find a buyer willing to give you $60k a pop in minutes.
Debatable, since the value is only given by humans - skins have no intrinsic value to them. I would be surprised if skin values were NOT artificially inflated by skins sites that make millions in profit from them. The China price spike for the last 10 days is evidence supporting that.
Oh absolutely, there's massive price manipulation from china, but not on this skin specifically, it has been at this price for 5 or so years now, all you need to do is take a look at BFK Doppler p1, went from $3k(?) to $11k within a year
Wasn’t there a chinese guy who was buying massive amounts of a certain case (glove case I think) trying to hoard them and raise the prices. I remember hearing about it a long time ago, wonder if he actually made profit since some cases have really gone up in the last few years.
Yes, valve can indeed just spawn another whenever they want, but they won't do it, it will completely ruin the economy which they profit millions every month from.
I own a quite nice inventory in cs and the attention i'm getting every time i join the server is well worth the price. Hearning reactions of some people is a cherry on top. But absolutely best thing about owning rare items is that sometimes enemy team will get so jelous that you will live rent free in their head for at least a week.
Also, the feeling you get when you own something really desirable and rare is quite nice and i'm guessing that's the feeling which makes it really hard for the guy who unboxed it to sell. Just like the one ring lol
At a certain point I think the market is criminals, and not gamers. Sure, there might be X amount of dipshits that would try to buy something like this to use in-game, but I find it hard to believe there isn’t some sort of black market or money laundering behind all of this.
Different set of criminal. Money launderers want it to be relatively stable and obfuscate the source of funds. Scammers/rug pullers thrive in volatility. Good thing there are different types of crypto that serve both purposes!
If you wanted to only launder you would pick a liquid item, not this lol.
Also the days of money laundering are pretty much gone. If you want to convert your skin or balance to cash, every site is legally required to get your social security, ID, etc etc.
A lot of the biggest CS whales are Saudi princes, crypto/Cs skins gambling website owners or shady Chinese people who can't explain how they got so rich.
Well CS skins are the closest thing to cryptobros' "NFTs" that we got.
Meaning each item is unique in some way, whether it is float or pattern, you can play with it instead of having a shitty paint.net drawing as your profile picture and the thing that differentiates it the most from other games' skins: you can sell it or trade it further.
In LoL or Valorant once you buy a skin it's locked to your account, meanwhile on CS you can sell the skins you got on steam market or third party websites, with free trade meaning that the community sets the price for a skin not Valve.
Same thought process that goes into purchasing most high luxury items. Rolls Royce or whatever is probably a well made car, but that's not why people buy them. The point is owning this rare and expensive item, and showing it off to other people.
I don't see the comparison at all considering that you could get multiple brand new Rolls Royces with that money and they are actually usable, and won't disappear to the void on Valve's whim.
Ok, forget about cars, let's consider one of those ridiculously expensive restaurants with some celebrity chefs. You pay thousands of dollars for a meal, and then some hours later, all you're left with is literal shit. What did it cost so much, and why would someone pay for it?
There's people out there, for whom even millions of dollars (though i doubt that this a real price someone paid in this case) is like nothing, they can and do just throw it in the trash without thinking about the better ways they could have spent it. And a lot of them like to flaunt this fact.
My friend showed me a 300£ knife skin he wants to buy.
I don't get it and i just can't understand why anybody would do that. The crates i understand, if you open one and a knife is worth that much, i can imagine it being crazy exciting, but just buying a knife for that much?
Like if we're in a game, do people think "oh shit, i just got shot with a gun with a skin that costs 5k!" Like does anybody give a shit or find it impressive?
The main thing for me is that the fact you can buy them makes them boring to me. If you had the rarest knife in the world, but paid over a million for it, you're still just an idiot.
Also if you find the rarest knife or whatever in the world in a crate, and you keep it rather than sell it for over a million, you're also an idiot.
I didn't know the word 'appreciate' in this context. English isn't my first language.
Haha, Redditors downvoting for not perfectly knowing their own language
Not all do, but generally yes. There are people out there whose entire job is to buy, sell, and trade skins to make a profit - kinda like a mini stock market.
its not stupid to buy a knife or keep one you purchased because they have increased in value so much. some skins have doubled in price over the last year. ive made hundreds of dollars from buying knives on a good deal and selling them a few weeks later for like $50 profit. and yes, people do find good skins impressive (in lower level lobbies mainly)
if you take out the peddling gambling to kids part this monetization model is... great? you can play the game for free and only pay if you want the cosmetics
It’s the only one in existence, and it’s hard to say for sure the price. Iirc an offer was made to buy it for 1.5m a few years ago but the owner declined saying it was too low.
I was on steam last night looking at some screenshots of my old skins from 2016 and the prices of those skins now are insane. I used to have a FN Ak Vulcan when it was £50. Now those are going for around £1000. Kicking myself for losing that in a bet!!
I got to a Sapphire Flip Knife through so much trading up and then cashed out and bought a 970… If I had kept that knife until now, I probably could have bought a car lmao, kill me

Hannabal_96@reddit
How immensely stupid do you have to be to not sell a digital skin for a million?
Either that or immensely rich
Settleforthep0p@reddit
You sound like someone who would have sold bitcoin at $100
DeadFuckStick59@reddit
me and a buddy (before he passed) were early into using btc for "substances" and at that point they were under a dollar a piece. I still remember us being frustrated when it passed 2 dollars per.....we had roughly 4-500 btc. that wallet and password left with him. sad shit
ProprietaryIsSpyware@reddit
The skin is worth more than 1.2 million
innocentrrose@reddit
Lol. It does get crazy. During the NFT craze, there were mfers turning down multi million dollar OFFERS. You can find a few twitter posts from that era, it was a wild time.
Palki7@reddit
Well, it kinda is like shitcoins. That's something to argue about, i guess.
yearningforpurpose@reddit
I'm pretty sure you're confusing the no-star Karambit and the offer for the blue gem Karambit. The blue gem Karam in the image received an offer of $1.2m. The no-star (not bugged, simply created with an incorrect title and values) Karam hasn't received any offers in recent memory.
Palki7@reddit
Could be im confusing something, but i thought i got this information from a video from sparkles or anomaly.
yearningforpurpose@reddit
This Karambit in the image received a legitimate offer of $1.2 million. The owner declined. They do not sell frequently at all. The largest sale I can recall was a bundle for $500k for the same knife in the image, but in worse quality, and a Case Hardened Pattern 661 blue gem AK-47 with four of the rarest stickers in the game applied.

Rarely because the owners rarely want to sell. On an auction they always do.

Only problem is some nerd offered the owner of this knife $2mil and he still turned it down. Unfortunately there are enough people like that out there
Winter_Low4661@reddit

Homstad@reddit
It's worth $1.5 million because that's the highest bid there has been
fluffynuckels@reddit
I imagine a lot of it is money laundering
Mami-_-Traillette@reddit
Someone offered 2.1 millions iirc and the owner refused it
ProprietaryIsSpyware@reddit
2 million now, it's an one of one item, I know it looks stupid from the perspective of someone that's not into cs skins but it's really worth that price, there are stickers that are so rare and sought after you could find a buyer willing to give you $60k a pop in minutes.
Inevere733@reddit
Debatable, since the value is only given by humans - skins have no intrinsic value to them. I would be surprised if skin values were NOT artificially inflated by skins sites that make millions in profit from them. The China price spike for the last 10 days is evidence supporting that.
ProprietaryIsSpyware@reddit
Oh absolutely, there's massive price manipulation from china, but not on this skin specifically, it has been at this price for 5 or so years now, all you need to do is take a look at BFK Doppler p1, went from $3k(?) to $11k within a year
Oryon-@reddit
Wasn’t there a chinese guy who was buying massive amounts of a certain case (glove case I think) trying to hoard them and raise the prices. I remember hearing about it a long time ago, wonder if he actually made profit since some cases have really gone up in the last few years.
frenzyguy@reddit
It is a digital itwm, can easily be completely duplicated, it as no value except whatever the money laundering guy as to pass on it.
ProprietaryIsSpyware@reddit
Yes, valve can indeed just spawn another whenever they want, but they won't do it, it will completely ruin the economy which they profit millions every month from.
Themis3000@reddit
Yeah that's where the value comes from, they've had an offer for it.

Money laundering
CrosshairInferno@reddit
At a certain point I think the market is criminals, and not gamers. Sure, there might be X amount of dipshits that would try to buy something like this to use in-game, but I find it hard to believe there isn’t some sort of black market or money laundering behind all of this.
Ratathosk@reddit
No need, there's crypto. That's what it is for.
Luz5020@reddit
CS Skins are a stable currency compared to crypto though
awolkriblo@reddit
I don't think criminals need or want crypto to be stable. It's easy to manipulate.
SubbyTex@reddit
Different set of criminal. Money launderers want it to be relatively stable and obfuscate the source of funds. Scammers/rug pullers thrive in volatility. Good thing there are different types of crypto that serve both purposes!
de420swegster@reddit
You got crypto for that. Most expensive skins these days are bought by Arab royalty, and Chinese faceless millionaires.
Apart-Arachnid1004@reddit
If you wanted to only launder you would pick a liquid item, not this lol.
Also the days of money laundering are pretty much gone. If you want to convert your skin or balance to cash, every site is legally required to get your social security, ID, etc etc.
imnevereversober@reddit
Nah, not for these 1 of 1 items. The super high end shit all gets sold to Saudi/Chinese oligarchs.
TeTeOtaku@reddit
A lot of the biggest CS whales are Saudi princes, crypto/Cs skins gambling website owners or shady Chinese people who can't explain how they got so rich.
Coppola_Mistakes@reddit
Who pays 15 bitcoins to a useless in-game item? What is the thought process behind it?
TeTeOtaku@reddit
Well CS skins are the closest thing to cryptobros' "NFTs" that we got.
Meaning each item is unique in some way, whether it is float or pattern, you can play with it instead of having a shitty paint.net drawing as your profile picture and the thing that differentiates it the most from other games' skins: you can sell it or trade it further.
In LoL or Valorant once you buy a skin it's locked to your account, meanwhile on CS you can sell the skins you got on steam market or third party websites, with free trade meaning that the community sets the price for a skin not Valve.
BadgerMolester@reddit
Yeah CS skins are just nfts, but because they are for a popular game they actually have value - unlike the crypto bro nfts.
I used to have a butterfly slaughter, bought it for 700 quid, sold it a couple years later for like 1.5k.
iz-Moff@reddit
Same thought process that goes into purchasing most high luxury items. Rolls Royce or whatever is probably a well made car, but that's not why people buy them. The point is owning this rare and expensive item, and showing it off to other people.
TraditionalRow3978@reddit
I don't see the comparison at all considering that you could get multiple brand new Rolls Royces with that money and they are actually usable, and won't disappear to the void on Valve's whim.
iz-Moff@reddit
Ok, forget about cars, let's consider one of those ridiculously expensive restaurants with some celebrity chefs. You pay thousands of dollars for a meal, and then some hours later, all you're left with is literal shit. What did it cost so much, and why would someone pay for it?
There's people out there, for whom even millions of dollars (though i doubt that this a real price someone paid in this case) is like nothing, they can and do just throw it in the trash without thinking about the better ways they could have spent it. And a lot of them like to flaunt this fact.
mogley1992@reddit
Zorcky-2C@reddit
The thing with CS skins is you get to play with your favorite skin, then you can sell it back anytime and make extra money in the process.
Skins in other games are 100% a waste of money
mogley1992@reddit
So they usually appreciate in value?
Zorcky-2C@reddit
Appreciate? You mean they increase in value?
If that's what you meant, yes they typically increase in value with time. You can make lots of money with clever investments
mogley1992@reddit
Yes, that's what appreciate in value means.
Not making fun of you for not knowing that or anything, just explaining.
Zorcky-2C@reddit
I didn't know the word 'appreciate' in this context. English isn't my first language.
Haha, Redditors downvoting for not perfectly knowing their own language
aeromedcs@reddit
Not all do, but generally yes. There are people out there whose entire job is to buy, sell, and trade skins to make a profit - kinda like a mini stock market.
YaBoyExile@reddit
its not stupid to buy a knife or keep one you purchased because they have increased in value so much. some skins have doubled in price over the last year. ive made hundreds of dollars from buying knives on a good deal and selling them a few weeks later for like $50 profit. and yes, people do find good skins impressive (in lower level lobbies mainly)
