Narrowed Down to the Velotric Fold 1 (Plus) & Lectric XP4 (Long Range)

Please Note, I'm relatively new to e-bikes and was looking for the best bikes currently available between around the 1200-1500 price point and for the mostly casual and exploratory riding me and my partner will be doing.
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole, looked into 30+ different brands, domestic/foreign mfr. options, various tiers of part specs, compared with traditional bike tech/design, tested a few brands/models locally, and finally landed on these models as the final two we'll be deciding on.
I made a spec comparison list for our top considerations using info from brand pages, videos, and articles (since brand marketing will sometimes do nonsensical things like use the "average" value between the e-bike weight with and w/out battery)
Since the XP4 is new and I haven't seen much comparing these two yet, here's a side-by-side of some specs & features:
| Model: | Velotric Fold 1 Plus | Lectric XP4 (Long Range) |
|---|---|---|
| Price: | $1,499.99 | $1,299.99 |
| Motor & Torque: | 750W (1100W peak), [75Nm] | 750W (1310W peak) [85nM] |
| Weight: | 67lbs (57 bike+10 battery) | 71lbs (62 bike+9 battery) |
| Frame: | Step-Through | Step-Through or Step-Over |
| Suspension: | Front Fork (60mm) | Front Fork (50mm) |
| Battery & Range: | 48V, 13Ah, IPX7 (up to 68mi.) | 48V, 17.5Ah, IPX5 (up to 85mi.) |
| Wheels & Brakes: | 20"x3", Hydraulic Front/Rear | 20"x3", Hydraulic Front/Rear |
| Display: | Color LCD, BT, USB-C (IPX6) | Color TFT, USB-C (IPX5) |
| Throttle Type: | Thumb Trigger | Thumb Trigger |
| PAS/Modes: | 3 Modes x 5 Levels, Class 1/2/3 | 5 Riding Modes, Class 1/2/3 |
| Drivetrain: | 7-Speed Shimano, 52-tooth | 8-Speed Shimano, 56-tooth |
| Sensor: | Torque&Cadence Swap Sensor | Torque Sensor ("In-House") |
| Lights: | Front, Brake, Turn Signal (IPX6) | Front, Brake, Turn Signal (IPX5) |
| Max Load: | 450lbs. (120lb cargo) | 330 lbs. (150lbs. cargo) |
| Warranty: | 2-yr | 1-yr (Opt. 3rd-Party Extend?) |
| Folded Size: | 37.8" L x 19.7" W x 33.5" H | 37"L x 17"W x 29"H |
| Dealers/Availability: | Test Ride & Local Servicing | Test Ride & Local Servicing |
| Pros (Subjective): | IP-Rating, Max Load, Warranty | Range, Torque, Frame Options |
| Cons (Subjective): | Cargo Max, Folded Size, Price | Max Load, Weight, FS Travel |
Some personal preferences we settled on include: folding style for space requirements, quality motor/battery for steep/hilly terrain, reasonable comfort/ride experience (e.g. front suspension, torque sensor, front/rear hydraulic brakes), Weather Resistance, and ideally brands that can be locally serviced.
I'm roughly 190cm tall, 90kg, don't mind some extra pedaling, and will be riding more in rain, so I'll likely opt for the Fold 1+ for its higher weight capacity and better water resistance.
My partner is shorter, lighter, and may spend more time on the throttle depending on the day, so the extra range and torque on the XP4 will be great for them.
Some honorable mentions that didn't make the final cut include: Aventon Sinch 2.5, Rad Power RadExpand 5/5P, Heybike Ranger S, Randride Elf/Hummer.
Let me know if there are any notable considerations we may have missed in our search! :)
Otherwise, I hope these considerations may be helpful to someone else in their search and I'll try to remember to follow up here to give additional thoughts after some time riding.

Nice. This is exactly where I’m at right now. I’m not interested in the Lectric because…well…I think they’re ugly. But I am cross-shopping that Fold 1 Plus with the Aventon Sinch, Mokwheel Slate, Radpower Expand, and Urtopia Carbon Joy. That last one doesn’t fold but it weighs only 50lbs, which is very useful.
(I don’t actually NEED need a folder; I’m more after the 20” wheels and compact cargo/utility design.)
Leaning strongly towards the Fold 1 Plus. Velotric seems like a good company, and this bike in particular seems like a good value.
Still shopping though.
Rich_Use_414@reddit
What did you end up buying?
Illustrious-One-3723@reddit
Tern HSD - turns out a short-tail cargo bike met my needs better than a folder.
It’s double the price, but is a higher quality bike and checked a lot more of my boxes. I wanted a stable ride with a low stand-over, low center of gravity, AND plenty of torque, AND able to haul a kid and cargo easily, AND as light as possible. AND a strong retail presence.
The Tern pros: - 6 lbs lighter than the Velotric - longer wheelbase (more stable) - better for child-hauling - better retail presence, eg. sold at REI. This is useful if you need repairs; many bike shops won’t touch e-bikes they don’t sell. - Higher build quality according to reviews
The Velotric pros: - Faster - Folds - Shorter wheelbase (more agile)
None of the Velotric pros are especially useful to me.
For commuting, general fitness/recreation, grocery shopping, etc. I’d say the Velotric is a great option.
For child-hauling and cargo, and especially if weight and build quality matter - and you’re willing to pay - I’d say get a Tern HSD or GSD.
Rich_Use_414@reddit
Wow I just looked it up and that’s a beautiful bike I hope you enjoy it every chance you get 😊

I'm on the same boat, looking at the xp4 750 or the Veloctric.... What's your guys thoughts? I'm in Tucson Az so not sure I can test anything around here..... Folding isn't a necessity but is cool ... 1st ebikes by the way
SufficientDoughnut17@reddit
Please can I also grab that code buddy?
Jeffspon@reddit
This post and request is great. I chuckled as I am considering the exact same 2 models. I have some nuance data that may help. I have been happy with the Lectric Xpress 750. However, I only have 100 miles on it. The XP4 has many of the same features. However, my wife and I rented the Fold 1 Plus this weekend to see if she would like. We rode for about an 1.5 hours consistently. In her case, comfort is the most important. We switched bikes a few times and we both found the Fold 1 Plus to be very comfortable. We have not decided yet, but pretty confident our choice will be the Velotric.
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
Nice! I do agree it's a pretty comfortable ride. I ended up ordering the F1+ for myself and leaning toward the same for my partner, though she'll still want to test some others before deciding.
We'll be doing a bit of riding off-road and or on dirt roads, so we may both end up adding a comfort seat and seat suspension to give a feel closer to full suspension since most current ebikes still only have front suspension (if any).
P.S. Have you had any experience with Lectric's support yet? I don't think I got a response when I sent some pre-sales questions to their contact email. However, Velotric's support has gone above and beyond my expectations for pre/post-sales questions.
Flimsy-Most4647@reddit
looking at ebikes, deciding probably on the Fold 1, how is it after 2 months?
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
No complaints at all with the Fold 1 Plus. Great torque and range for our needs. I still think Velotric has the best software/controls if you like to lean into the electric experience. Our area is full of big hills, so it's nice to adjust for efficiency and a boost when needed.
Jeffspon@reddit
Good insight. I had some shipping questions with Lectric and they were responsive. I used email. Also, they gave me a military discount when I purchased that I appreciated. I believe their service to be good. Let me know what seat and suspension you end up going with.
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
Velotric's Suspension Seatpost 2.0 looks like its good quality and I probably would have got that if it was discounted with purchase or something. But I'm trying to keep the cost under 100 for that accessory, so I decided to roll the dice on an "SR Suntour SP12 NCX" I found steeply discounted via Amazon Warehouse.
For the seat, I read some good things about the "Selle Royal Respiro Relaxed". But I'll probably want to head to a larger local bike shop or REI to check those out in-person along with wearable accessories like gloves and a helmet.
Fair-Tell-1984@reddit
I'm glad I'm not the only one who did this. LOL I ended up going with the Fold 1+ since I can pick it up directly here in GA.f
howdoesthisworkfuck@reddit
Very good call considering the XP4 launch issues
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
Gooood call, I had to special order mine at my local shop and it took a few weeks to arrive. Finally picked it up today!
FederalLobster5665@reddit
i just test rode both of them, and am leaning towards the velotric. I just found the ride more comfortable.....
BodSmith54321@reddit
XP4. Even the 500w version has better hill climbing ability than the 750w fold. It is heavier though.
BetaMaxBrah@reddit
After having the XP4 for a few weeks, the throttle is god awful. They claim variable, but's it's essentially all on, or nothing. Super jerky and nothing in between. LOTS of people have reported this. Otherwise like the bike.
BodSmith54321@reddit
Try going to eco mode before using throttle. Someone also posted that rotating the throttle down slightly might help as it might be affected by magnet in the brake cut off.
BetaMaxBrah@reddit
I only use eco mode. It's either the throttle itself or the controller logic. I'm investigating replacing the throttle with a different one to see if it makes a difference.
Some-Cheesecake58@reddit
This post is so funny, because I've been doing the exact same thing (comparing, analyzing, etc) about which ebike I should buy...AND...I've narrowed my search to the same 2 folding ebikes. I'm limited to a folding bike because of space limitations (storing bigger bike, bike rack, etc) and I'd have to install a hitch on my 25 CRV Hybrid (extra cost at $500 ish because of the additional kit to relocate the kick sensor, ugly, interferes with backup sensors, etc). The bad thing about the smaller bikes with 20" tires is that they are very twitchy with the steering....feels like I could jack-knife the bike so easily. Anyways, I was deadset on the Fold 1 Plus until I saw the XP 4.0 announced with more power and cheaper price. But, when I was recently at a dealer test riding another brand of folding ebike, a kid came in with a Lectric 3.0 that has been at the service shop many times. This time was because of a squeaky brake and some other issue I couldn't overhear him say. I'm concerned about Lectric's quality, but the specs seeem better. The only specs that concern me with the Lectric 4.0 is the "in-house" torque sensor, the in-frame battery (pain in the butt to remove), the frame collides with itself when folding, QUALITY of the bike in-general, can't accerlate to the max 28 mph with throttle only in any setting, lack of cruise control, and the lack of ability to switch between cadence and torque sensor, like the Fold 1 Plus. The specs that concern me with the Fold 1 Plus are the knobby tires (prefer smoother street-tread tires), the lesser torque (75 nM vs 85 with XP 4.0) and the non-0 degree stem for the steering (the steering stem bends away from the rider when it exits the frame at the top) which makes the arm-reach further out, and lesser range because of the smaller battery. Yesterday, I was dead-set on the XP 4.0 until I saw the kid come into the bike shop AGAIN to get his XP 3.0 fixed. But today, I'm back to 50-50 ugh. Hope this helps and I'll be keeping an eye on the other responses to your question as it may help me too!
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
Lol, it was certainly a tough choice between the two.
I completely understand the quality concerns relating to Lectric based on some things I've seen for 2.0 and 3.0 and somehow they kept the XP4 price lower than other brands despite the competitive specs. The "launch" and press coverage was very contained at their grand canyon event and it sounded like everyone was reading off the same script. I must have heard 8 different YouTubers talk about how the XP4 "kept the heart and soul of the XP line".
I also felt like the 2yr warranty on the Velotric was a sign the company stands behind their product and after a couple months on the market, I haven't seen any quality issues on the Fold 1 Plus, which seemed like a quality successor to the Fold 1.
While I don't have much experience with Lectric personally, I would want to see more thorough reviews and wait for it to arrive in local shops for a test ride.
Aside from time constraints, the major reasons include some of what you mentioned: - I want to be able to easily remove the battery, esp. if I lock my bike up somewhere. Without testing, I'm not sure I can trust Lectric's in-house torque sensor (Fold 1 Plus sensor felt great) - I really like the options and controls on the Fold 1 Plus. The PAS levels are nice, cruise control is a great feature, and it seems like there's just more granular controls in the software overall. -Overall quality of the Fold 1 Plus seemed good for my needs. I like the 2yr warranty, the higher IPX ratings, and 120lb. higher max load makes me think the frame is just more solid than the XP4. (Despite weighing less? lol)
I had a local rebate to use before the end of the month, but if you have more time to decide it would probably be best to test them side-by-side to see if the difference in motors is noticeable and to get a feel of the quality first-hand. Also, if tires are too loud on the F1+, they're not the most expensive thing to replace.
limoapp123456789@reddit
I live in hurricane florida and love the new movement to ebikes, I've studied and did research on entry level ebikes, came to same place as everyone else xp4 and fold 1 plus, I love alot about lectric xp4, but in the end, the velotric is clear winner because of where I live I need the battery thrown into a bucket of water, there's a youtube video of fold 1 plus owner showing off, I just gotta have the more secure bike, but I will need to invest in second battery for long range capabilities. And I wish they had a 5amp fast charger like xp4, but overall she'll out more money for peace of mind, take care 💯
Some-Cheesecake58@reddit
Yes, the 2 yr warranty for the Fold 1+ vs XP 4.0 1 yr was something that I forgot to mention, but you're right, that is a sign that they feel more confident about their product. The weight rating is also a good point as it's speaks to better engineering despite weighing less.
If you don't mind telling, how much was your rebate and is it just local to the bike shop in your area? I know of a dealer charging $1,399 not in my area, but they said it would ship directly from Velotric with no shipping charge.
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
I was lucky enough to get selected for a rebate of a few hundred in the lottery-style rebate program that recently concluded in WA. I think Boston also had one recently where people could get quite a bit more in rebates ranging from $800 to $2400. Word in the shop was if these programs are successful in getting people to bike more and reduce traffic, they may run more of these types of rebate programs in other areas.
The Fold 1 Plus was priced at the standard list price of 1,499.99, but it does seem like there are affiliates or sellers that are able to get you around $50-100 off of MSRP. I'm not sure how quickly ebikes go on sale, but with Memorial Day is coming up and another recent announcement about a tariff pause for CN, and I'd be curious to see if Velotric runs any promos to compete with the launch of the XP4.
plainandawesome@reddit
Did you already order the Fold 1 Plus? If so, how is it so far? I'm going back and forth between these two as well, but heavily leaning towards the Fold. I want to be able to easily remove the battery both at home and when commuting, and to me that's the biggest drawback of the Lectric IMO.
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
Just waiting on shipping, so haven't had a lot of tine with it yet. But the test ride was smooth, sturdy, and I liked the controls/software.
I'll follow up with an update once I've had some time to really put it through its paces.
Mammoth_Ad7803@reddit
PseudoChris
I share the same choice of ebikes. Where were you able to purchase Velotric Fold 1 Plus in WA state? Did they let up test it first? I also have the state rebate to use. Tried to contact a Velotric Dealer located in North Seattle but no response to my emails. As I get closer to my expiration date I really want to make sure to make this purchase timely.
Thanks for any infomation
PseudoChris@reddit (OP)
I'd recommend visiting Amped Adventure for a test ride if you haven't already and or if you plan to purchase a Fold 1 Plus.
It's possible they may not have time to keep up with all of the incoming emails, but they seem to be answering the phone when possible.
Shops are getting slammed atm as I'm sure others are approaching expirations as well. I definitely tried to give any shops I visited a break when it came to wait times or service where employees are swamped with customers.
misterpeppery@reddit
I would probably have been in a similar decision dilemma if the Lectric XP4 500w version didn't exist. Especially since any rebates on the Velotric make the price between it and the 750w XP4 very similar. But for me the sub $1k price of the 500w XP4 was too tough to pass up, especially since I will be buying two bikes. I do wish the 500w version came with, or offered, a larger battery.
The "sensor swap" feature of the Velotric seems intriguing at first glance, but in reality you are spending more to get a torque sensor and, other than for curiosity's sake, I don't see using the cadence sensor on the Velotric.
Things that I do think will make a material difference on the Lectric over the Velotric are the improved gear ratios and better shifter/derailleur and from reviews it seems like the brakes on the Lectric, once they are broken in, are actually pretty decent. And maybe I'm buying into the marketing hype but the reviews tout that Lectric really did try to listen to their users and improve the XP4 in many ways over the XP3, which was already a mature and well liked product.
There are a lot of things I prefer about both bikes over the other. Software and user interface seems better on the Velotric, pedals and tires seem better on the Lectric, yadda yadda. For me price was a huge deciding factor and being able to get a folding bike with a torque sensor and quality drivetrain components from a reputable brand for under $1k was enough to get me to place an order.
BetaMaxBrah@reddit
I'm in the same boat. Lectric had their brakes custom designed for them by Star Union. If I recall, the Fold 1 Plus uses "no name" hydraulic brakes. Also, the Shimano shifter components seem better on the Lectric.
Visitor-727@reddit
Great write up! My research for a folding bike brought me here. Price point with the Fold 1 Plus is on point, especially with the features included. I’m personally leaning towards the Carbo X due its lightweight and belt drive, but not sure if that’s worth the price difference.
