Do we see small cars ever coming back?

Talking with my wife about this, with wage stagnation and car companies gravitating towards larger SUVs, how soon until we see manufacturers getting hit with decreased sales because a 20 something year old simply can’t afford to buy a new or even gently used vehicle? I think about the gas crisis and how it spurred the small car movement in the US because they were way more economical to buy and drive. I genuinely think that eventually while the causes may be slightly different, we are going to see that happen again. I’m not saying the resurgence necessarily of multiple hatchbacks and sedans in a manufacturers lineup but at least a smaller more affordable vehicle geared towards the younger generations. What do you guys think?
