Aaaah, there is where I wanted to go. There were many course providers and I went to the council and then I saw the price. My council is dodgy at times so it felt off. Did not go and check the other providers as they seemed private companies.

If you have 3 points on your licence your insurance premium will go up a little. If you get caught again then you'll have 6 points and your premium will go up a LOT (and you won't be given the option to do the course that time if it's within 2 years). So what's the most sensible way of ensuring your premiums don't get out of control? Think ahead. Do the course.

!answer Thanks for the reply (and all the others). I did not realise the increase in the insurance fee. I am still unsure that it would apply on my non GB license but once I have confirmed it is meant to be £95 then I'll do it anyway. Cheers all.

So what happens is you get a ghost licence created to store the points. When you transfer your non-GB licence to a GB licence (which you will most likely have to do at some point, otherwise you'll be driving otherwise in accordance with your licence which is *more* points) those records get merged. Actually, looking at your post history I assume you have a Spanish licence? You shouldn't need to swap that out then.

You are right, it is a Spanish ATM. I don't have to but Spain makes it complicated to renew it (in person, passing a psychotechnic test and not before than 3 prior to the expiration date and I couldn't fly back then). So I decided I can swap and still drive in Spain less than 90 days per year, which is enough.

If you take the 3 points on your licence, you MUST tell your insurance company, or you will uninsured in the event of an accident. As a result, your insurance will go up, probably by more than 100 pounds a year for the next 3 years, until your conviction is "spent". No guarantee it will come down after 3 years. Speed awareness course, you do not need to tell your insurance company. Take it and carry on with your life. Your choice.

Most insurers you only need to tell them on renewal or on obtaining a quote. Also most insurers don’t raise premiums for 3 points. That said, it’s always better to take the course - you can do them online and actually do learn things from them

My insurer raised premiums the moment I told them, that one of those who would be insured had paid a fine and got 3 points on their licence. Still the cheapest insurance I can get, by hundreds of pounds. Different insurers may do different things differently. Everyone in our family is insured to drive each car we have.

I did one last year. I got a fine for doing 53mph in a 40 (which had recently changed from a 50 and the signage was terrible and 12,000 people got fines in 3 months until they changed it back...) was not happy to be one of the unlucky drivers. I paid £90. It did sting paying but didn't want points and insurance increase. The actual course was fun actually. A little bit cringe because the guy was like a game show host but I definitely learnt stuff and reinforced that I do actually know a lot about driving and also reinforced that there are some people out there who don't have a fucking clue.

My insurance went down 170 this year cos my points went off ,5y of that added to insurance,do the course online you only have to look at the screen i had football on in the background on quite of course

Having just done a speed awareness course I can definitely recommend it. you should attend it and avoid the points on your licence and perhaps it might just keep you and others safer on the roads

I got one of these late last year. Friendly bunch on the zoom call. Instructor said that since everyone got online and registered quickly we should get through the course quickly...I chimed in and said "With all due respect going quickly is what got me here in the first place so take your time". Got a few chuckles and people were nice - worth it imo.

The course is £5 cheaper AND you have no record so do not have to declare the points to your insurance that will likely go up if you take the points. Take the course and the lesson, it’s only a few hours
