Ai trucks

I’ve been driving big trucks since the 90s and I’ve been hearing for over 20 years now that self driving trucks were going to take my job away eventually. Here I am 20+ years later, no closer to that reality.

lithium256@reddit

are you sure it was 20 years? AI for self driiving didn't exist 20 years ago

Reality seldom stops many people from saying things they think are true. And that’s only got worse in the last 5 years.

My boss is very old school; we'd still be using paper logs instead of ELD if it was possible.

mvamv@reddit

Have your boss look into buying trucks year 2000 and older. Eld exempt. Only issue is if the other drivers are gonna want to drive them.

Simply planes fly automous but still requires a pilot, like I said it’ll always be a driver in the seat for at least a few more years
View on Reddit #55390823

True-Count1264@reddit

Few more years. Why did you make this post. You seem to have the answers.
View on Reddit #55391805

Longway23544@reddit (OP)

Because I keep seeing post saying we’ll lose our jobs that won’t happen until another decade when every vehicle is automous then it’ll be driverless
View on Reddit #55391924

True-Count1264@reddit

It’s never ganna happen. Like you said. Plane with autopilot need a pilot.
View on Reddit #55392454

Longway23544@reddit (OP)

It’ll take years to replace every truck on the road with ai its millions of trucks out their, even when it first comes out it’ll have a driver in the seat we are years or a decade away from fully automous
View on Reddit #55416449

You are not accepting people’s answers to the question you posted. We are all just sharing our opinions. Who know what’s ganna happen.

They will pay you lesser dummy. It will not be worth it. Straight to McDonald jail.

Never going to happen in our lifetime too much risk for a company to take it will take one major accident and a lawsuit and that will be the end of it and it will die
View on Reddit #55441331

Admirable_Purple1882@reddit

Ok then they will just replace all other trucking jobs besides ones where it happens to be snowing, until that is figured out, big brain stuff right here
View on Reddit #55411845

Longway23544@reddit (OP)

To replace truck on the road it’ll take years do you know how many trucks are out there?
View on Reddit #55416364

Admirable_Purple1882@reddit

The question is not how long till all the trucks get replaced it’s what percent of trucks being replaced will downgrade the pay of driving to picking vegetables.  Maybe 10% would be my guess, possibly up to 20?
View on Reddit #55419534

Longway23544@reddit (OP)

By the time we are fully replaced I’ll be nursing or in healthcare ai can’t replace that
View on Reddit #55419802

spyder7723@reddit

You will be long dead. The day may come when truck drivers have to worry about being replaced with self driving trucks, but that day is so far in the future it won't effect any of us currently doing it now, hell it won't effect the guys that just signed up for school.

So what? We just stop discussing it? That’s such a short sighted and selfish view point. It’s someone else’s problem so let’s kick the can, right? We should be discussing the implications around this technology because someone in the future will have to deal with it. If the discussion starts after the technology is perfected you are already way the curb. This’ll probably get deleted for politics but fuck it. If you think this will not have serious and dangerous ramifications for the working class people of this industry you are an insanely naive person. Technology moves fast and is getting better by the day and we live in a country with very few safety nets or even a system setup to really protect them when they are inevitably forced out of their career. I mean several years ago a politician caught flack (rightfully) for saying “just learn to code.” This is coming if we like it or not, and sticking your head in the sand because you don’t like how it makes you feel won’t do anything for anyone, including yourself. I’m starting school next year and changing careers, but how long before they try to replace that? The time for discussion and pushback is now. Not when your boss is patting you on the back with a shallow “Sorry man, it’s just business, I’m sure you understand.”

Longway23544@reddit (OP)

It’ll take years to replace every truck on the road you know theirs millions of trucks on the road? Right? Maybe they’ll release a few each year but it’s not gonna replace every driver just yet they don’t even know how it’ll drive in the winter, the Midwest have terrible snow in the winter we are years away from truck drivers being without a job my guess is when it does come out it’ll have a driver in the seat to monitor and take over if necessary we are years from having no driver in the seat!!
View on Reddit #55417029

ggKnoxx@reddit

Yes driver, I’m well aware of all the trucks on the road lol. It doesn’t detract from any of my points. You then go on to just do exactly what I mentioned you were doing in my first two sentences. Maybe it won’t drive in the conditions that the more northern states have, the fact is, neither of us know. But if you think for a second that they’re dumping millions of dollars into these driverless projects as some sort of pet project then I simply don’t think we can have a conversation. This tech will provide value for these companies in some way, and I’m willing to bet it’s efficiency. Better cameras, more “safety” measures, better tracking of both cargo and driver. They will use it to squeak out every last second and mile that can be given, all in the name of the shareholders. I’m not inherently against these technologies. But I do have the belief that they should be used to make our lives easier and not just to fatten someone else pocket.

Class consciousness in this country is basically dead. We've internalized our own oppression by this point. You git what you git, you don't throw a fit, and when it gets taken away from you? Well you were just lucky to have had a job at all. Shoulda planned better. Shoulda seen this coming.

All y’all comfortable with ai and robots taking all the jobs? Soon there will no jobs for humans!!
View on Reddit #55413843

aklear19@reddit

Instead of thinking. We will be replaced by AI. Think of ways to keep our jobs but still embrace new technology.. Think about it, okay there's self driving trucks, but there still needs to be a person along for the journey. Who would fuel, who would secure the load, who would wash the truck, add fluids, scale the load, put air in the tires...etc I see it as a form of team driving where only one of the operators needs to sleep. Next 600 miles straight away... hey, Copilot, take the lead on this one. I'm gonna chill and relax.
View on Reddit #55397404

OsBaculum@reddit

You know they'll take the chance to pay you less, right? And if the truck crashes itself you'll be liable, since your job is to monitor.
View on Reddit #55407535

aklear19@reddit

Well company will take any chance to pay a driver less. Im sure there wording that can be added to the contract or job description that's can protect the driver. As in a team set up. When you are off the other is in control

I don’t know they could add a heater to the sensor to melt the ice/snow and install a wiper to wipe away the residue Or they could have stations every couple miles on the interstate a truck can pull in and recharge/have an attendant wipe and clean sensors, mirrors, cameras, etc.
View on Reddit #55404875

Nero-Danteson@reddit

Some states are requiring a driver in the rig anyway, if/when the technology gets advanced enough. Pretty sure this is why. Sudden adverse conditions where the rig can't drive itself or a sensor (and redundancies) fail. Keeps the tractor rolling and not a giant road block that'll probably throw a temper tantrum if it gets towed.
View on Reddit #55406252

Virel_360@reddit

Yeah, that’s a problem for the next generation. I personally only need another 10 years or less until I hang up the keys so this probably won’t affect the rest of my career too much. But the next generation should probably look into become a a diesel, mechanic or software/computer programmers.
View on Reddit #55406545

Ton_in_the_Sun@reddit

And this is why you have a skill attached to being a driver.
View on Reddit #55404407

Bro, they cant even get TRAINS self driving reliably yet, and these tech bros think they can get an 80k pound rig to be self driving? Lmao They keep saying this shit is 5 years, since fucking 2000. It aint happening any time soon lol

I just dont know. But i agree that up here in new england (where i drive) we deal with conditions that are often unexpected and very challenging. Just like a month ago i was up in the poconos in a blizzard doing 35mph trailing a plow truck cause otherwise there was no way out. What would companies do if they laid off all their drivers and winter comes along and the sensors cant function reliably. Would they be okay with halting freight for extended periods? Who knows
