mDNS/DNS-SD, Mopria Printers, IPP, VLANs

Has anyone gotten DNS-SD working in a Windows environment? What is the solution to use Mopria certified printers while still having a dedicated Printers VLAN? They can be added directly, but you loose a lot of functionality.

You'd have to configure an "IP helper address" and ports to propagate the discovery-protocol information outside of the subnet. You *should* get equivalent functionality by setting them up as IPP(S) printers at a known URL. If you're just setting them up as "network printers" then they're presumably being configured as raw `tcp/9100` printers, which don't have IPP Everywhere/Mopria functionality. You'll want to explicitly set them up as IPP; Google knows how.

From what I understand when a computer discovers a printer via mDNS the DNS record contains a TXT record that tells the computer its capabilities. However when you add a printer directly (Add-Printer -IPPUrl) there is no TXT record so it doesn't know the printer's full capabilities. I've confirmed my printers are Mopria certified as their mDNS broadcasts specify they are in the txt record when I inspect them with Avahi. I was hoping I could create static DNS-SD records instead of setting up forwarding or a reflector/repeater. I've made an attempt to create the records (_dns-sd, _ipps, etc.) in AD, but maybe I need to point them to another server running BIND9 or something. Though I can't even find if Windows supports discovering printers via DNS-SD.

I'll have to give that a try. Though for my printers adding direct via the IPPS url I lose a lot of functionality compared to "discovering" it. The TXT records for me have a line saying "mopria-certified=1.3".
