A Veruca Salt appreciation post

Posted by analogthought@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 91 comments

Was not into them in high school that much, but in my late 20s or so I met several people my/our age that were and now here we are. I was more of a Breeders fan at the time and this was a little too pop for me… but man, such a good jam.

I saw Veruca Salt open for Depeche Mode.

I got to see their 4th or 5th show ever. They were opening for Liz Phair at the Metro in Chicago (Rock for Choice concert 5.14.1994). There’s a picture of the show on the back of their first album. No one had ever heard of them and they absolutely rocked everyone’s asses off. 14-year old me was front center—right against the stage—and my mind was blown forevermore. I became a woman that day. I still cherish the 7” of Seether b/w All Hail Me I got after the show.

Hi!! I’m late to this thread but just commented below about seeing them at tower on Clark in late 90s. Loved them.

ISeeYouNoThanks@reddit

FINALLY, I can tell a story someone might find interesting. Saw them at Tower Records on Clark street in Chicago in late 90s, they were promoting 8 arms to hold you. Lesbian friend (unbeknownst to us beforehand) had preplanned to write I LOVE YOU or something like that on her bra in black sharpie. So Louise was singing and got hit in the face with it , stopped, and put it on before continuing singing.

See, this is one of those "I totally look up to Gen X" bands for me personally. My brother had that famous album.

I remember seeing/hearing them for the first time as a "Buzz Bin" clip on MTV. Loved their first two albums dearly

8 arms to hold you was the first disc I wore out instead of scratched.

I'm not sure how Seattle sucked up all the attention when Chicago gave us Veruca Salt, Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Jesus Lizard, Smoking Popes, an embarrassment of terrific bands.
View on Reddit #55045302

noonesaidityet@reddit

Jesus Lizard. My people. The Smoking Popes song Rubella is on a permanent orbit in my head, and I haven't heard the song in 25 years. It just pops in like some kind of nostalgia comet.

Yes! Add Local H to this list.

Think of Local H makes me miss when radio was more independent. For some reason, my local modern rock station (104.1 WMRQ in Hartford, CT) picked up on them earlier than most stations did, and we got a heavy dose of "High-Fiving MF" before "Bound for the Floor" was released. So we were primed for them and BftF got huge airplay. Later that year they played our station's annual concert -- [check out the amazing act list](https://www.setlist.fm/festival/1996/radio-104-big-day-off-1996-63d4be3b.html) -- and we went nuts for them. I can't imagine a mainstream radio station finding obscure singles these days.

Hell yeah. Saw them at Rockstock outside Chicago in 96 or 97 and they were sweating.

I was there for rock stock 97. Great lineups. Megadeth, faith no more, veruca salt were Main stage. I saw helmet, limp bizkit, and jimmies chicken shack on the other stages. At least that’s what I remember.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out [the currently active band Momma.](https://youtu.be/nZWxWsEiGBQ?si=OkUMfnKl5ZNFA_w3). Not a copycat (it's been ~25 years) just VERY similar vibes. Guitar and harmonies that just purr. My daughter and I are going to catch their tour while we're visiting NYC.

Man, memory unlocked! I'm British, bit often go to the USA because my dad and younger siblings are there. In about 2000 I met a really nice guy in San Diego and he told me when he had a daughter eventually he was going to call them Veruca after the band and the book. I took great pleasure in explaining that a veruca is a wart on your foot.  I crushed his dreams! LOL

Yeah, this is good stuff. Amusingly, the first time I heard Seether was at a party and when I asked who it was I was just inebriated enough that I spent the next few days thinking the band was named "Baroque Assault". Which I'm honestly kind of disappointed was apparently never used by a real band.
