Ford Edge... who in their right ming would buy this thing???

I recently had this 2024 Ford Edge as a rental car during my vacation... and yeah why does this thing exist? Here's my review:
Pros: none
Cons:
-
The 2.0 ecoboost turbo engine feels overworked and underpowered. I am shocked because you'd think a 2.0 turbo would be somewhat peppy but this one is not it.
-
Due to how the engine underperforms, it returns bad MPGs I was getting approx 24 MPG on flat highway and normal acceleration.
-
The hood design makes the corners looks huge and bulky and it's obstructing. During turns or parking, I had to be extra careful because it was difficult to eyeball how close I got to other cars or anything else.
-
The f**king infotainment. The HVAC is all integrated in that gigantic tablet. Apple CarPlay is wonderful in it, but the HVAC controls integrated underneath are awful. The temp and fan control are so small you need to fully concentrate on it to make any changes. It was so dangerous I had to rely on my wife to control the HVAC the whole time. I honestly don't understand why having phones while driving is illegal but these tablets get a pass. They're an absolute danger.

Seats are uncomfortable and the whole ride is uncomfortable. All the bumps are transferred inside badly.

ITS TERRIBLE!!!!!!! i’m in one now as a rental until my Honda gets fixed from getting hit from behind! i can’t even begin to tell people how awful everything about it is! I’ve hounded the Collision place for updates because i can’t stand to drive this another minute!!! the gas mileage is pathetic.
PurpleSausage77@reddit
It is terrible. They were tolerable up until that stupid big useless tablet integrated everything. Totally not needed.
ManderlyDreaming@reddit
I particularly hate the way there are six random buttons under the giant tablet. Just why??? Why are those six functions not controlled by the tablet? Why not make it all tablet or all button?
ManderlyDreaming@reddit
A ford edge has recently been inflicted on me and I loathe it. That giant screen, with the AC controls on it, makes me crazy. It’s not comfortable or fun to drive. It feels huge, like I’m driving a king size mattress. It’s not bad looking but otherwise it’s awful.
WizardlyLizardy@reddit
Boomers and other old people who refuse to buy anything but ford or gm. Only people I know who own one
NemoDatQ@reddit
Everything you just said essentially also applies to my 2013 Escape Titanium. I guess they never learn.
dayofdefeat_@reddit
It's a 17 year old chassis that was facelifted twice
Drzhivago138@reddit
The first gen was CD3 platform; second was CD4. The '24 Edge was the last use of the CD4 platform.
Trades46@reddit
The Edge is way past its sell by date. The older gen with the 3.5L Duratec V6 are actually nice drivers, but the current one exists only in the 2.0L EcoBoost as fleet specials and as you said the powertrain is tuned incredibly poorly. Very strange as the same 2.0T in the Escape and Fusion feels far better.
The only good driving Edge are the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 twin turbos, but the pricing drives it uncomfortably close to luxury SUVs.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Which is part of why it was discontinued a year ago.

I did have the 2.3T ecoboost in an Explorer before that was actually impressive.

The ford edge used to be a great crossover SUV, but it’s probably long past the expiration date for a model that has been continued without much major changes or improvements.
Razgriz-016@reddit
Reminds me of the old Challenger/Chargers.
abarthsimpson@reddit
Are they the same as the Bronco sport?
Razgriz-016@reddit
No, they're bigger. Bronco Sport is on the Escape platform.
Razgriz-016@reddit
As someone who works at a Ford dealer and drives these on a semi regular basis, i can 100% agree with you. I hate these things and every one we sell, (I'm in detail, not sales) I just question why someone would spend money on one, when the Escape or Bronco Sport is a better option (imo)

Your wife had to control the hvac? I bet that was one hot trip. 24 mpg? I drive a 22’ 4Runner everyday, I dream of 24mpg, I get 19 on a good day. Infotainment screens are cheaper but completely shit for anything outside of Android auto, or CarPlay and integrating every system into them needs to die.
NewAgePhilosophr@reddit (OP)
I have a 4Runner as well and get 17 MPG on highway lol, but we can't compare a crossover with a small engine to our bulky off-roaders. This this should be getting at least 28 on a normal day with a turbo 4 banger
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
I just perked my eyebrows up at the fact that your 4runner gets worse highway fuel mileage than my V8 pickup truck lmao.
Checks out through, Toyota isn't exactly known for fuel mileage outside of their smaller vehicles, even the new Hybrid V6 Tundra gets, no kidding here, worse mileage than my Titan on the highway.
My Rav4 is kinda mid, too. I only get like 30-34mpg highway.
NewAgePhilosophr@reddit (OP)
Wait do you have a regular ICE Rav4? 30-34 MPG is decent without hybrid tbh.
I also lost some MPG cuz I have AT tires.
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
Yeah, a regular base model LE. One of my favorite vehicles of all time, so i drive it gently tbh. It embodies the no cheap frills and basic, reliable commuting that's a peace of mind to have.
tv_eater@reddit
Fun fact that small engine has about the same power as your 4Runner, assuming it’s the v6

Rentals is how I identify all the worst cars, my rental Nissan murano was the worst car I have ever driven
jb122894@reddit
So you finally drove a ford huh? This is basically all fords other than their f-series trucks
DJMagicHandz@reddit
I loved renting the OG Pacifica with the 4.0 that thing was a best and it held it's own when I got lost on a literal mountain after a weekend of camping.
seymourbutz11@reddit
I have one as a rental for work. Been in it for 6 months+. Infotainment sucks. Otherwise I feel like it decent. It's not fast, but also wouldn't say it's slow. Faster than my 14 Silverado. I'd buy one for a good deal as a daily
Real-Edge-9288@reddit
that and KA+... what an ass of a car
RBR927@reddit
Has Reddit completely disabled spellcheck in post titles or am I losing my ming?
NewAgePhilosophr@reddit (OP)
I think you're loosing your ming

My dad had a 2009 Edge with the V6 in it and that thing was a fucking beast! It was fairly fast, never had an issue, and would never get stuck in the snow. I would use it sometimes to tow a trailer with snow removal equipment during snow storms. Our trucks were busy plowing so me and the sidewalk crew would hop in the edge and go from property to property clearing sidewalks. It had like 273,000 miles when he sold it, the guy who bought it put a tiny bit of work into it and cleaned it up and it looks great and still drives nice.
ssmokn98@reddit
We had a 2011 v6 and it was a great vehicle. Only knock was the Sync infotainment. Laggy touchscreen that would crash on occasion. Sold it for an MDX that has also been great.
IntheOlympicMTs@reddit
With enough financial incentives any thing can become a good deal in the short term. In the long term meaning reliability and resale it’s not great but people don’t always look at it that way.
brett0917@reddit
Yeah, Ford vehicles aren’t good. We had a Ford Focus rental in Vegas years back, and it was horrible. Never owned a Ford, never will.
loganwachter@reddit
I owned a focus.
That car was enough to make me swear off American cars entirely. I’d consider a Rivian if I had the money but that’s the only brand I’ll even think about.
brett0917@reddit
Yeah. I had a Pontiac G6 back in the day and it was a good car up until it had a bit over 100k miles then it went to shit. Otherwise I’ve only had Japanese cars. Currently own a Honda and my wife has a Subaru.
We just had a VW Atlas rental on vacation. It was pretty nice. Even the SE trim we had, included heated/ventilated leather seats, infotainment was pretty nice, but kinda odd to navigate around in the menus, but probably would just have to get used to it. Overall we liked it a lot, but never owned a German car
NewAgePhilosophr@reddit (OP)
Yup, never ever would I own a Ford. These are just abysmal.
nzzzr@reddit
If you’re buying a car with any manufacturer, you have to know what engine you’re buying. Then go from there.. unfortunately most new engines are terrible because of global emission laws.. so all these new vehicles are kinda “rushed.” It will get better but American cars have never really been great (few exceptions).
