My husband and 7 year old keep calling this delicious snack “ disgusting”
Posted by Mrsmeowy@reddit | shittyfoodporn | View on Reddit | 143 comments

It’s shredded carrots with raisins, pineapple, vanilla Greek yogurt, cinnamon
dreadlord_scars@reddit
DISGUSTEENGG!!
HonestPineapple4848@reddit
Looks terrible to me but if you like it who cares
Interesting_Event_68@reddit
This looks healthy and yummy 😋.
Think_Basis3441@reddit
Leave the raisins out
showlandpaint@reddit
One of my favorite things in the world is carrot cake, this looks great to me, I'd probably get stoned and eat it with graham crackers.
LazyAmbassador2521@reddit
Mmmmmm I would spread a lil cream cheese on the graham crackers then top them with this carrot mixture! It would have similar flavors as a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
GreenLampshades@reddit
My thoughts as well. Although I might nix the pineapple
Embarrassed-Bike-998@reddit
Looks great to me. Kinda like ambrosia
xo_kawaii_mama_xo@reddit
A lot of those ingredients are in carrot cake, so I'd imagine this would be great!
Commercial_Worker743@reddit
Sounds like carrot salad, minus mayo, plus yogurt--definitely how I would go if I made it nowadays. Pineapple has always been an optional add-on, which I like. Cinnamon, never done it, but I can see it working.
Let them call names, just means you don't have to share, lol.
Mrsmeowy@reddit (OP)
It is!! My mom was telling me about it and I had to try it but I never like mayo so I switched it
copperboominfinity@reddit
I made Waldorf salad last week. You could probably swap out the mayo there too!
Commercial_Worker743@reddit
We do Waldorf for every get-together with my husband's family (6-8 times/year). It's still a favorite of mine!!
Now I'm going to make a tiny batch this week, just to test this theory.
copperboominfinity@reddit
I love it, my in laws love it, my kids and husband won’t touch it 😂
Critical_Bug_880@reddit
I imagine I would try this with cottage cheese, minus the cinnamon. Maybe even toss in some chopped walnuts!
Commercial_Worker743@reddit
Nuts, typically walnuts or pecans, are included in some old-school recipes, actually. I was thinking about cottage cheese as a different swap as well. I think you may be the same kind of food explorer I am, lol.
Fantastic-Judgment48@reddit
nuts in salad is such a nice thing especially walnuts
Critical_Bug_880@reddit
Yes, and probably about 1/3 the amount of carrots lol. I like carrots but I can imagine this much would wear my jaws out from all the crunching. 😬
Still, carrots, raisins, pineapple, chopped nuts and cottage cheese with maybe some honey drizzled over? Sounds tasty and healthy! I like Greek yogurt as well but I’m not really the type of person to use it.. like a dressing. 😂
Commercial_Worker743@reddit
It blends in so well with veg, lol. I love composed veg salads--think cucumber salad, broccoli salad. I happen to love real mayo, but typically try to use less of it where it's just one ingredient when a substitute works. Greek yogurt is a go-to sub.
jivens77@reddit
I was expecting OP to say cottage cheese, lol.
At least, that's what everyone I knew would use in the 80s/90s. Seems greek yogurt is more common nowadays.
Agitated_Sock_311@reddit
That sounds damn good.
PhonedZero@reddit
I like it 'sweet'. I use Miracle Whip salad dressing, and love the cinnamon and raisons as well.
prntrgobrrr@reddit
your family is right. you shouldn't trust your tastebuds nor the woman you inherited them from.
_PirateWench_@reddit
This is about the only way I’d try it. Once I realized it was mayo I noped out. My husband loves it though, and the guy is from Antigua and lived in NYC for years after his family immigrated.
Commercial_Worker743@reddit
It's an old-school salad, lol, but oddly enough, our local grocery still has tubs of it next to potato salad, baked beans, and macaroni salad. I don't like their version of it, and my husband doesn't care for it at all. I liked it the way my grandma and her friends made it back in the 80s.
22Shug22@reddit
Never "yuck!" someone's "yum!"
Commercial_Worker743@reddit
Oh, I wasn't. I was agreeing. There are plenty of things my husband and I don't eat that the other does. That's always our answer, lol, "more for me!!"
DontYouDareGoHollow-@reddit
Is this a thing? because it sure as fuck shouldn't be, lol. None of those things go together.
Zephyr93@reddit
It sounds like fruit fluff, but with a vegetable touch.
sumknowbuddy@reddit
Cinnamon in yogurt is great
goosepills@reddit
Do you have Covid?
NonorientableSurface@reddit
It's like Gajar Ka Halwa.
tessajanuary@reddit
Yeah that's where my head went too! Kinda a bastardized Indian Halwa (which is great).
vxrsxcev1@reddit
Kind of sounds like a deconstructed Carrot Cake!
melanonn_@reddit
would ngl
TeddyRuxpinsForeskin@reddit
It’s like evil coleslaw. I’d just be mortified to take a bite expecting mayo and be greeted with pineapple, cinammon, and raisins. Even if you take out the carrots, I just feel like those ingredients don’t really fit together.
This sounds like a violently midwestern American thing.
NepalesePasta@reddit
Have you ever tried cinnamon on pineapple? Heaven. Yoghurt is just making this into a little fruit yoghurt cup. The vibe is like a Christmas dessert. Raisins are mild and sweet so I don't imagine them being super offensive tho I understand the texture is not for everyone. Then carrots are great in sweet foods like carrot cake. So rly i think it's a good sweet take on coleslaw
aHEMagain@reddit
I initially thought the dish was a variation on Ambrosia salad, which frequently is served during holidays.
Ill-Major7549@reddit
"put it in a bowl and cover with miracle whip" - every midwest salad recipe
TeddyRuxpinsForeskin@reddit
It’s the raisins that I feel really give it away.
Lowten_writer@reddit
Traditionally raisins where a good source of sweetness that kept really well when sugar was unavailable. So a lot of old recipes included them
MrBeverly@reddit
Dessert Coleslaw 😭 The Midwestern version of this substitutes yogurt for Cool Whip
Niteowl_Janet@reddit
If this Snack is so disgusting, why do they keep selling it at the grocery store in the deli counter?
I personally would not eat carrot salad (Raisins in salad? Aww HELL nah Karen!), but others think ambrosia salad (pineapple tidbits, mandarin oranges, colourful mini Marshmallows, maraschino cherries, vanilla yogurt, and toasted coconut flakes) is disgusting, and I think it’s absolutely delicious!
SgtRudy0311@reddit
Think about where you posted this.
Particlepants@reddit
I could always pass on raisins but yeah, nothing clashed here, sounds good
PawnWithoutPurpose@reddit
Disgusting
RavioliDiavolo@reddit
🤮🤢🤮🤢
agentfortyfour@reddit
I'd destroy a bowl of that.
wishiestwashiest@reddit
I'd use that as the wet to make some muffins
BohemeWinter@reddit
In pakistan there is a sweet dish of rice pudding with shredded carrots raisins nuts and cardamom.
There's another with shredded carrots, sugar syrup, milk solids, raisins and nuts.
This looks like a lazy version of one of those and sounds yummy to me.
GoodKing_Ainsworth@reddit
That actually does sound quite good
Most_Reflection_6315@reddit
They're not wrong.
casanochick@reddit
I had a preschool student call this "Lucy salad" because it was her favorite snack--they used a combination of cream cheese and mayo, and it didn't have pineapple. It tastes much better than it looks!
wiz___khaleesi@reddit
This sounds incredible to me, but I guess we are in the minority!
spesimen@reddit
back in the day my mom used to make this too. i love this stuff.
there was an indian place down the street that always had something like this as a side dish on their menu too.
Junior_Custard_4311@reddit
It's carrot cake adjacent, I respect it!
Chicken_man_12345@reddit
You have ruined pineapple and carrot salad 😭
I'm telling my gran, best start running before she gets the belt 😭
HopelessSoup@reddit
You know what? I’d fuck with it minus raisins
PirateKing827@reddit
I dunno when we started putting things from the trash into bowls but we have to stop…. We gotta draw the line somewhere
TheyCallMeGaddy@reddit
Youre like 2 cups of flour an egg and a 1/2 tbsp of baking powder from a carrot &pineapple upside down cake.... do it. I feel like it could work.
PiersPlays@reddit
Just make a fruit and yoghurt snack and a separate coleslaw. Mashing the two together for yourself is weird but OK. Trying to insist that others eat it is silly. This dish is the equivalent of sticking roast vegetables, potatoes and meat, and a trifle into a food processor together. If that's your thing fine. But there's nothing wrong with others thinking it's unpleasant.
Mrsmeowy@reddit (OP)
It is a yogurt snack just with less yogurt
PiersPlays@reddit
Yeah it's not the amount of yoghurt that's the issue. It's the amount of carrot.
Mrsmeowy@reddit (OP)
I love carrots lol I’ll eat tons of raw carrot chips by themselves
PiersPlays@reddit
Lots of people eat love carrots and eat raw carrots. They also make coleslaw with it. Which if you trace it back far enough is what your recipe started as. But you substituted out the very last thing (mayo) making it a savoury dish in the final step of telephone game between coleslaw and fruit & yoghurt with some carrot in it.
Oblivion_Gates@reddit
My grandmother makes some kind of carrot/raisins salad concoction. It definitely wasn't with yogurt, maybe Mayonnaise or ranch. It's pretty good haha.
Silerys@reddit
I would add shredded coconut or use toasted coconut greek yogurt. Reminds me of carrot cake. Saving this!!!
nnogales@reddit
If I imagine this as a sweet treat with added carrots, I can almost accept it, but my first thought was salad gone wrong.
SanDiedo@reddit
Greek youghurt in this is questionable thing for me.
My family likes to eat something like this though:
fresh fine-grated carrots (pre-check for bitterness!);
for moisture and crunchyness, add in whole or diced raisins or other dried(or lyophilized) fruits, fresh grapes, orange, apple, pear, pineaple, nuts (can be mix, but not peanuts);
mix in a little bit of sunflower oil to extract those vitamins (according to taste, but don't overdo it);
sprinkle and mix in cinnamon;
let it sit in fridge for a couple hours;
check taste and add some sugar if necessary.
Keep it in fridge. I usually mix a couple more times and then let it sit over night. Juices drench everything - carrots, raisins, nuts, sweet-sour with cinnamon, mmmmmm 😋...
TheSunflowerSeeds@reddit
A compound in sunflower seeds blocks an enzyme that causes blood vessels to constrict. As a result, it may help your blood vessels relax, lowering your blood pressure. The magnesium in sunflower seeds helps reduce blood pressure levels as well.
SanDiedo@reddit
Uhhhhh... ok... 😬. This looks like a weird bot...
frugst@reddit
They not wrong
Dead-HC-Taco@reddit
just sounds like a sweet cole slaw
AppUnwrapper1@reddit
🤢
ichigokero@reddit
honestly as a mayo hater i was disgusted at first, then relieved to find out it's yogurt
Bashby12@reddit
Carrot cake salad.
No_Force_4820@reddit
That sounds really yummy! However if I didn’t read your description I would absolutely not be going near this lol
My mind first thought this was shredded orange cheddar with bacon bits and ranch or something like that 😭😭
illo79@reddit
They’re correct
MrTheDoctors@reddit
I’ll admit it looks like that one dish at the potluck nobody ever touches but after reading your description it sounds pretty good.
veebles89@reddit
I have always and will always hate carrot salad. Waste of perfectly good carrots!
IdLOVEYOU2die@reddit
Yeah that's pretty rough
The_Golden_Warthog@reddit
Reminds me of the weird and gross "salads", like "Ambrosia", that my Depression-era grandparents and relatives would bring to parties growing up 🤢
DontYouDareGoHollow-@reddit
Goes perfect alongside your meat jello.
IdLOVEYOU2die@reddit
Look... I understand it can work... But that's an acquired texture and taste combo.
SousVideDiaper@reddit
It's the raisins and cinnamon that mostly throw it off for me
I like both sometimes, primarily in bread and/or oatmeal cookies (which I know are often hated), and I know cinnamon is a common ingredient in many savory dishes, particularly in South Asian cuisine, but this particular combination is just too far out of left field for my palate.
IdLOVEYOU2die@reddit
Great name.
Main-Dish-136@reddit
It is kinda unusual...I guess?
CuckAdminsDkSuckers@reddit
They are correct, you are tasteless
birdsadgirl@reddit
It’s giving carrot cake salad? I kind of want to try it 👀
Bigro37@reddit
I'd hit that since I know now it's yogurt and not mayo
HashSlasher0311@reddit
first glance it looked like mexican rice with tortilla strips beans sour cream and chicken
imagine my shock
Vegetable-Star-5833@reddit
Sounds gross but I don’t have to eat it
_Und3rsc0re_@reddit
Jail
Subjective_Box@reddit
soo.. unbaked carrot cake.
I see the vision
Sproose_Moose@reddit
Your husband and 7 year old are correct
probablyinpajamas@reddit
No I see the vision! I’m good with all those ingredients together except the carrots, but they’re crunchy and sweet(ish) so I think they’d go well.
sammyshears@reddit
This screams white people
Skadoodle_skies25@reddit
Yes, it's in this community for a reason. I'll bet a girl is eating this because they eat some wacky shit. And why is there always a white sauce involved
CaptainBubbles12@reddit
This feels like deconstructed carrot cake with extra bits. Which is a good thing
notoriouseyelash@reddit
you gotta cast it all in jello
karenskygreen@reddit
I'm pretty sure I had this at picnic, it's yummy
LunarValleyOfRoses@reddit
Carrots and yogurt should never be in the same sentence
Lexa_inthe_Lexus@reddit
Drop a bit of light cream cheese or blended sweetened cottage cheese & you have a "carrots cake" with incredible macros.
Mrsmeowy@reddit (OP)
I’m gonna try cottage cheese tomorrow!! Yummm
Lexa_inthe_Lexus@reddit
Please let me know! I'm quite literally impatiently waiting lol
scfw0x0f@reddit
“You eat first with your eyes” is what’s happening here.
FerrumAnulum323@reddit
I would call it disgusting as well. Mainly because I hate raw carrots.
m0nstera_deliciosa@reddit
This sounds really good! I used to get a salad from the Russian market made of carrots, raisins, honey and sour cream- a little vanilla yogurt would fit right in. I think your husband and child have a sophisticated snacking palate.
Kingston023@reddit
The only people I've met that like this shit are 90 year old women.
disgustening@reddit
this is genius, like a sort of carrot cake without the filler. i'll have to try it and add walnuts like another comment suggested
cardueline@reddit
Raw food carrot cake! I wish I liked raw carrots more, I bet this is good as hell lol (though I’d probably add like a drop of maple syrup)
TrainingSword@reddit
They’re right
HumbleYeoman@reddit
They are correct
Deep-Repeat1021@reddit
It’s giving the impression of carrot cake without the flour part lol I think I’d trying this but with baked carrots. Enjoy OP!
Buhos_En_Pantelones@reddit
I'm not feeling the carrots, but otherwise sounds tasty.
Mrsmeowy@reddit (OP)
It’s like a carrot cake
Buhos_En_Pantelones@reddit
I'm converted!
MarsScully@reddit
I can see it
accidentalscientist_@reddit
The carrots weirded me out at first, but also I get it. Carrots tend to be sweet. And as OP said, it’s kinda like carrot cake!
XxCroisssantsxX@reddit
Im buying the ingredients and eating this. Thank you
OliJalapeno@reddit
It's good. Continue to enjoy.
82CoopDeVille@reddit
I was with you for 3 ingredients and then you lost me.
Supper_Champion@reddit
Go to hell and take your snack with you.
Yesmar00@reddit
Have you ever heard of ambrosia? This is Very similar except to that except you added carrots
kawiz03@reddit
simplordOG420@reddit
Accurate
Fae_Fungi@reddit
Sounds absolutely disgusting. I'd still eat it though, i just wouldn't tell anyone that I did.
oovenbirdd@reddit
Reminds me of carrot cake before you bake it!
bellawych@reddit
Add in shredded apples ! I am Baltic and grew up eating shredded carrots and apples with walnuts, raisins, lemon juice, cinnamon, and yogurt or cottage cheese. Very good.
AkariBocchi@reddit
if you add suggar and little marshmellows they will love it
emielaen77@reddit
Yeah, this does seem disgusting
Senki89@reddit
Perfectly edible glop, dunno what their problem is.
YamDankies@reddit
It's got raw carrots and raisins in it. I feel like they're justified. Enjoy what you enjoy though.
KittiesRule1968@reddit
I love carrot/raisin salad!!!! They're BOTH toddlers
Livid-Improvement953@reddit
Does anyone here remember when Chick-fil-A had carrot raisin salad. Basically the same thing and it was delicious.
foodieonthego@reddit
Yes! Exactly what I was thinking when I saw it.
Reasonable_Hand_4787@reddit
looks yum! I need to try this
hahagato@reddit
Not into the cinnamon but otherwise sounds pretty good. Reminds me of the controversy of shredded carrot in orange jello. I love that
Basic-Magazine-9832@reddit
actually a delicious healty snack.
definitely not shittyfood.
mybrainisbutt@reddit
But it is shitty foodporn
