Surprised by all of these. I fly a lot, like 20ish flights a year, and aim for 90 mins with a suitcase and 1 hour without. Plus 30 mins for Stansted or Manchester. Never missed a flight in the UK (did once abroad but that was a different issue)

You know when you have that friend who is *always* late for everything, right? Well airlines know this, and have to accommodate such people in their planning and advice. Yes you could definitely catch a fight in perfect conditions, no queues and no hold ups by turning up 5 minutes before boarding, but flights cannot wait for a few stragglers. So advice is given which permits a few queues and delays into that figure of 2 to 3 hours.

I once sat at the gate waiting because everybody who went through was just standing there in a little penned area not being allowed on the plane. Eventually they called my name over the system and I went past the little barrier and then they finally allowed people to start boarding. I have no idea why they crammed the whole plane worth of people into this holding pen with about 5 seats in it but I felt like a bit of a cunt because some people had been waiting in there for like 20-30 minutes.

KLM don't open the bag drop until 2h before the flight, so I usually aim to get to the airport 2h before departure. It's been a long time since I've flown somewhere internationally direct from Scotland, and if there are any layovers I'm picking AMS every single time, so it's always KLM (and the worst sandwiches in the world). Walking in the door about 2h before departure usually means I have enough time to not worry about security and grab a coffee or links roll or whatever, but not so much time that I get bored.

It depends on the airport and the airline. For example, Loganair open their check-in desks really late, so there is no point in being there 3 hours early. I would also arrive earlier at Heathrow or Manchester than I would in Aberdeen or Inverness.

Well it used to be 2 hours. But then my last flight they decided to move it up by an hour. This was at Manchester airport. We got stuck behind some dumb ass in security who thought he could bring a case of random lotions and potions through and didn’t speak English enough to understand the staff. By the time we made it through we had to literally run like the wind and made boarding with one minute to spare. Was sweaty as fuck and drenched by the time we sat down so we were uncomfortable for the rest of the flight. Now I will arrive 3 hours before my flight. It’s worth it to never have to go through that again. Idm chilling out with a pint and a book til boarding.

I'd say it depends where your flying from, for example Stansted is busy as hell and I'd recommend 3hrs or so to make your flight comfortably, for a small airport say Norwich probably only 1.5 hr

I fly from Stansted regularly, we always arrive in the long stay 1.5 hours before the gate closes and find ourselves sitting around for, what feels like, ages before we can board the plane. I’ve found it to be fairly efficient from a “getting through security” standpoint.

Don’t get me wrong, of course on occasion this happens. But I don’t think it’s been chronically bad all the time, like I say, I fly out of there at least once a month, flight times at different times of day and different terminals, done that since about 2018 and it’s not usually that bad. Of course it peaks during school holidays, although I flew out of there during Easter holidays and was through in ten mins. That was at 8am.

If I’ve booked a lounge I’ll try to maximise my time in there otherwise I’ll aim for 1.5-2 hours before. The shortest was 1 hour before departure at Stansted (30 mins before the gate opened/closed) and I still managed to grab a drink and the longest was 4 hours when I had an evening flight and just felt like I was waiting around my house. When I travel with my mate I have to fight to get her to agree 3 hours is the maximum we should get there before.

Yep. Uk domestic flights or flights from my local airport - i will be walking into the bag drop (or straight to security if ive no case) at 2 hours on the dot before flight time. This airport is 15 mins from my house and small in comparison to other international airports so not really much point in being mega early. For a lot of destinations though i have to fly from Dublin, which is a 2 hour drive along a route that frequently snarls up with traffic in general and there are a lot of bad accidents. So i factor in extra time for my drive and aim to be at the airport 3 hours before. I get free lounge access in a lot of places so im perfectly happy to chill in a soft seat with free drinks and snacks. I get anxious about being late, hate queues and would be flustered if i was tight for time before a flight. Much rather be relaxed sitting near a gate than running through an airport before they close the doors.

This is me too, I live 40 minutes away from a major international airport. But I am absolutely convinced that if I leave my house any less than 5 hours before my flight 1) The motorway system will shut down, and all access roads will get jammed 2) The airport will have a major security issue, and there will be at least a 4 hour queue through security, and it will be guaranteed that 3) My departure gate will be the one furthest away from security and will involve at least a one mile run to get to said gate. What actually happens is that the motorways and all access roads are clear, and I have to wait at least an hour for the correct check in desk to open ..the security is absolutely spot on and I'm through to departures in less than 10 minutes. Then I find that the actual gate won't be announced for 3 hours, so I might as well just go for a meal and wait it out yet again....but at least I'm there and ready !!

Enough time to get there, check-in with time to spare, and then enough time to deal with any delay getting to the airport. My general mindset is: get up and get to the airport or finish work and get to the airport. I would rather sit in Costa at Heathrow for 4 hours on my laptop than miss a plane because of traffic or malfunction. If you get home at 6 and your flight is at midnight, what are you going to do other than sit on your phone for 2 hours anyway?

No stress or panic is the main priority for me, so if there's any problems getting there, I've got time to re-route. If I'm coming back to the UK I check the plane on Skyscanner to make sure it's even left the previous airport, I hate being stuck for hours at airports due to delays

I really depends on the consequences of missing a flight. For a long haul flight, you may not be able to get another flight for several days and there may be a very high cost to get the ticket reissued, so I will allow 1.5 hours for time at the airport and likely add an hour of contingency to travel time too just in case. That often results in 2 to 3 hours kicking heels at the airport. On the other hand travelling short haul for business (say London to Paris) there will always be another flight and the company picks up the tab for a new one if they did not book a fully flexible fare. I used to travel so much I got very blasé about check in times. I have arrived at even busy airports with 10 minutes to go before pushback and still made it on the plane. Even if you do miss it, what's the worst that can happen? You spend the night in hotel and get one in the morning. Of course that all assumes you are travelling with carry on baggage only - which is another reason business travellers avoid putting things in the hold if they can.

When I used Heathrow for work - 30mins with no bags to check in. An hour for bags. I knew the layout, which gates to use lifts v escalators etc. Holidays out of Bristol, Birmingham, Luton - 2 hours because security queues seem unpredictable and if I get thru fast I can get food etc. Manchester if I ever have to use again 3 hours because it always seems like a nightmare. The 3 hour rule came in after the twin towers due to extra security and seems to have stuck around.

For European flights boarding normally starts 40 minutes before departure and ends 20 minutes before departure. If you don’t have bags then arriving 1hr before departure is fine. For international check what time boarding opens but 2 hours is normally fine without bags. If you have bags it depends if you’re flying business or economy; economy queues for backdrop often extend 1hr+ but in business it’s normally pretty quick.

Regional airport or major hub? Regional I’d leave less time than Heathrow/Gatwick etc. Flying to Europe or further afield? Europe I would be more willing to cut it fine than Australia. How are you getting to the airport? If it’s a short drive then less risk of getting stuck in traffic on the way. If at the mercy of public transport you need to decide how much you trust it. I view the timings as also adding some buffer to the journey to the airport not just time at the airport.

Normally about 2-2.5hours (I’ve only gone to Europe) but it depends on transport. Early morning flight when the option would be a taxi (or an insane long night bus trip as I get motion sickness) get there as late as public transport allows and entertain myself to not fall asleep to pass security as soon as it opens.

Depends on the time of day the flight is for us, if its an early morning/midday flight we aim to be there 3 hours beforehand (wife is disabled and uses a wheelchair so the additional time needed for checking in her wheelchair is advisable). On our last flight (return from the US) our flight was one of the last, departing at 2200, the airport was virtually empty and we were through to the gate in 40-45 mins, which was nice but pretty much everything was closed leaving us to sit around for an hour before boarding.

2 to 3 hours as I'm anxious about missing the flight. I've had it where it's taken over an hour to get through security before. At Ben Gurion Airport (Israel), it took 2 hours to get through security at departures. So I have history here. Most of the time, I'm through security within half an hour.

Aim 3 hours. Realistically after the multiple missed exits and the inevitable driving around fields to find the parking. It’s never more than 1.5-2 hours.

As we don’t travel with kids anymore it’s usually 2-2.5 hours. We have a leisurely stroll, have a nice meal and some wine, do a bit of shopping etc. We kind of enjoy it. We don’t get wound up by other people as we just block them out. However it’s Manchester airport so takes an age to get through

Depends on time of day, who I am travelling with, which airport. My partner is always running late for things and gets stressed flying. I make sure we turn up in plenty of time. But there isn’t anything to except pay for bad overpriced food and bad overpriced shops (duty free aside). If I was in my own, I’d give it 2 hours at a busy time.
