“Growling sidewinder” said the the YF23 looks like a flying squirrel and I can’t unsee it now.

Honestly I still think it was a mistake to go with the YF22.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, it had already been proven stealthier and faster, in the f22s defense it does have better agility but it’s not like there’s much dogfighting happening in this day and age.

What is your source? I don't think there has been any offical documents released from the Air Force stating their reasoning for choosing the YF-22.

Head to head, the two jets met and exceeded the expectations of the Advanced Tactical Fighter program. They were both fantastic tech demonstrators and prototypes. The differences between the YF-22 and YF-23 were arguably minute and not superior or inferior enough to define one of the two jets as the clear choice. The 23 was slightly stealthier, but the 22 was slightly more agile. The 23 was a bit faster, but the 22 could carry more internal munitions.
The ultimate decision came down to the logistical, political, and monetary trustworthiness among the two aerospace companies involved, Northrop (YF-23) and Lockheed (YF-22). At the time of the trials and decision in the late 80s early 90s, Northrop was in very hot water politically and legally. They were all over the headlines with controversies related to fraud, mismanagement, falsifying test results of various projects, and budgetary overruns. All of which left a bad taste in the mouths of the DoD/Air Force.
Even though Northrop had provided an excellent airframe for the ATF program, the powers that be were hesitant to grant them further contracts due their battered reputation. They just were not fully convinced Northrop could flesh out the Black Widow project to a full production run while remaining within an acceptable budget window and delivering completed airframes on time.
And so Lockheed was the favored company that won the contract and that is why skies now belong to the Raptor.

So Wikipedia and quora were right?
Scriefers@reddit
I don’t know what ya mean by that
ManifestDestinysChld@reddit
My preferred headcanon conspiracy theory is that the Air Force assumed Northrup was already going to have their hands full building B-2 Spirits and that they didn't want to have both of their shiny, spendy stealth project eggs in the same basket.
discombobulated38x@reddit
There was likely a genuine strategic element to the decision of keeping two key stealth players in the race.
That's part of the reason Northrop won the B2 contract (source is Ben Rich's book Skunkworks), makes sense it would play out again a few years later with the F22

You won’t like the source…. But when I google why the f22 was chosen over the f23 the top ones the AI overview pulls from are quora and Wikipedia. So yes you are right that there is no official source claiming why the 22 was chosen over the 23. All the sources speculate the same thing though, that being that the US Goverment assumed that lockheed could build them a plane on the time and budget they needed. But once again you are right.
Playedfoot8362@reddit (OP)
Makes sense on paper so idk 🤷♂️
RapedByCheese@reddit
Precisely. What amount of fights will get to the merge these days?
Playedfoot8362@reddit (OP)
Only time will tell I guess. Seems like the last few decades have been focused on prioritizing BVR fights, hell it’s one of the main reasons for a stealth fighter. But at least it will be able to hold its own if for whatever reason it has to get close.
RedactedCallSign@reddit
Thrust vectoring looks good for the gram tho. (Airshows)
Wolfie_142@reddit
The YF-23 looks a helluva lot better too
redcat111@reddit
I agree, the generals wanted their sports car and realize that the future was stealth. The F-23 would be dominating airspace in ways that would be far more relevant now and into the future.
RestaurantFamous2399@reddit
And the F-35 looks like a penguin!
Phil-X-603@reddit
Now that you say that, I can't unsee it either. 😂
Limp_Growth_5254@reddit
No . Fat Amy is perfect.
She looks like a fat Amy.
RedactedCallSign@reddit
Penguins can be named Amy too!
RestaurantFamous2399@reddit
Battle penguin is its more PC unofficial name
RedactedCallSign@reddit
Penguins do have a famously low radar cross section.
Playedfoot8362@reddit (OP)
I agree, it really does have it going for that whole “puffin” look.
Enough-Cabinet-5829@reddit
That's hilarious! I totally see it too.
Individual_Towel8337@reddit
That's a funny observation! Can't unsee it either.
