Reference to Chinatown

Maude Lebowski has coitus with a man with the same name as her own father. This is a sly reference to Chinatown.

I have thought the same thing. As a matter of fact the more noir movies I watch the more references I recognize. Some off the top of my head:
The dude getting his head shoved in the toilet as intimidation is the same thing that happens in Serpico.
The tracing on Jackie Treehorns notepads to revel what he drew is a reference to the same thing in North By Northwest.
Jackie Treehorn himself seems to be a reference to another character Ben Gazarra played in Killing Of A Chinese Bookie.
Obviously lots of Raymond Chandler references. Title is taken from “The Big Sleep”. Also in that movie he talks about being a “brother shamus”.
“The Long Goodbye” also takes place primarily in Malibu and has a lot of Lebowski-type situations.
I think maybe they might have used some stuff from To Live And Die In LA. It involves a Chinaman, and a “ringer”.

I never recognized any direct rip-offs, er, homages other than The Big Lebowski being similar to The Big Sleep, but the first time I watched it I recognized that it was a send-up of 40s detective noir.
Most prominent for me are the the introductions to TBL, Maude, and Treehorn, where they start conversations by talking about things that seem out of left field, totally irrelevant, and eventually come around to turning those topics into some kind of vague connection to or metaphor for the case. The fun part is, where Sam Spade or Philo Vance or Nick Charles might have followed the conversation and understood the metaphors, Dude is totally lost from word one.
Dude constantly getting kidnapped, invited, summoned, and roughed up by various players in the story is also a trope in detective noir, as is the femme fatale, the missing girl, and the weaselly rival (brother shamus) trying to horn in on the deal. Though, in noir, the weaselly rival usually ends up dead because he bit off more than he could chew.
Hell, by the end Dude himself starts to think of himself like a detective, working shit out and referring to what's going on as "this case".

Lebowski is absolutely the Coens take on a film noir story, but inverted so that the hardboiled detective is replaced by a hapless amateur who gets carried along the story, yet manages to solve it in the end. I like to refer to it as a softboiled detective story. :P

Clearly you're not into the whole brevity thing

LA Confidential- Jackie Treehorn very similar to Pierce Patchett in LA Confidential.
Pierce runs upscale hookers that look like Hollywood starlets and of course Jackie’s in the smut business.

Fuckin interesting

Oh, man. My thinking about this case had become very uptight. Yeah.

You must be a brother shamus
LLKroniq@reddit
Far out man. Far fucking out.
c0ntr0LZED@reddit
So, you don't see a connection with a plot involving a father having sex with his daughter and a plot with a daughter having sex with a man with the same name as her father?

Luckily, I'm on a strict drug regimen...

Every Raymond Chandler book. It’s uncanny

Or perhaps the name is just the coincidence that drives the entire movie, Donny.

Chinatown is not the preferred nomenclature - Asian Americatown, please.

"Forget it Jake" yes that's your answer to everything isn't it.
kellerb@reddit
Slice it into your nostrils! The bums will always lose! I don't sit around moping over the loss of my daughter wife. Some Chinatown took her from me. I went out and achieved incest anyway
grufflesia@reddit (OP)
lmao
Missy_Agg-a-ravation@reddit
They’re going to rape that poor woman
Amerrican8@reddit
Nope. The Dude abides.
throwawaymcgee842@reddit
How is it a reference to Chinatown when the same thing doesn't happen in TBL? Maude does in fact sleep with the Dude, Jeff Lebowski. Her father is also named Jeff Lebowski. We know that. Evelyn Mulray in Chinatown sleeps with Jake Gittes. Her father, the one that raped her, is not named Jake Gittes. His name is Noah Cross. I see what you were trying to do but really do not see a connection.
Elmeraculous@reddit
Well there isn't a literal connection...
throwawaymcgee842@reddit
There literally is no connection. Not even a sly one.
Elmeraculous@reddit
But my point is...
Key-Contest-2879@reddit
Yeah, what’s your point, u/elmeraculous?
