I know car lights are brighter now days. Is it me or are there more idiots just driving around with their brights/high beams on?

In Texas, it is illegal to use high beams within 500 feet of an approaching vehicle or 300 feet behind a vehicle in the same lane. You must switch to low beams in these situations to avoid blinding other drivers
Document-Numerous@reddit
Part of the problem is that trucks or SUVs that have aftermarket lifts don’t get their headlights adjusted properly. They come adjusted correctly from the manufacturer but even lifting it 2 or 3 inches will changed where the headlight shines.
yeahimhigh04@reddit
I used to flash lights at those cars, then the last one was a cop... he turned around and followed me. Le sigh
retathrowaway6@reddit
gotta learn to reflect their lights back at them.
i do this with my side mirrors and while they rarely turn off their brights, they back way the hell up.
JoyfulCor313@reddit
I would flash my brights, but then they’d flash theirs and I REALLY be blinded.
I finally noticed most of the time it wasn’t their brights, it was the damned pickup trucks. They’re higher off the ground so their lights are right in my face.
I’ve given up and just sometimes wear sunglasses at night not just cuz I’m so cool

I have been meaning to bitch about this as well. I leave for work 15-30min before sunrise usually and these mfers are mad maxxing through Oaklawn for the tollway with these 100 gigajoule lights like a police helicopter
ZandarrTheGreat@reddit
1.21 Jigawatts!
ShakyMango@reddit
Its so challenging to drive at night for this, its like almost every car has flash lights on
Icy-Essay-8280@reddit
What I don't understand is where is our government in protecting us??!! These lights NEVER should have been allowed on cars. Big auto doesn't care and Uncle Sam apparently doesn't either
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
Our "government" is distracted with other things besides protecting us from high beams. But don't worry, you're protected from immigrant toddlers.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
When I drive on country highways (East Texas, mom lives there) people flash their brights at me all the time. I don't have my brights on. It's annoying but not sure I can do anything about it. I rarely use my brights (only if in a completely dark place) and I'm very careful not to have them on when someone's driving towards me.
Erickck@reddit
It’s actually insane. I have an Indian friend who had no idea what high beams were. He said he would just drive around with them all the time until one day I noticed it while grabbing a drink with him at night. I informed him how dangerous it was. That got me thinking, and so I asked another friend who is also Indian, and he had no idea what the highbeams were as well. So there may be some cultural differences contributing to this.
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
More idiots driving around with their brights on.
I see it all the time because I'm driving to work or home in the dark.
I'd even say it's at least 30% of the drivers now-a-days.
I just wonder if they don't know how to turn them off/on.
I've even flashed people with my brights so that they'd dim theirs and "nothing", they leave the brights on.
I even see this during the day.
AND YES - I know the difference between the "new" brighter lights and having the bright lights on.
BeanerCounter@reddit
The last three cars I drove had fancy bi-LED headlights. People would flash their brights at me any time I drove at night. I would proceed to turn my brights on and leave them on until they passed me. I know it’s not right but being on the receiving end of a bright light really screws up my vision and I wish people wouldn’t do it. I don’t flash people anymore unless I can see the exact moment when their brights have turned on.
sadisticamichaels@reddit
So instead of fixing your lights you blind others? Classy.
BeanerCounter@reddit
Can’t fix them. They’re stock lights. I’m not going to ruin the value of my car by throwing on cheap aftermarket headlights.
sadisticamichaels@reddit
If only there were some way to adjust headlights....
BeanerCounter@reddit
I don’t think you understand. The standard LED headlight is blinding, my brights are basically torture devices. There are no adjustments on most cars in the USA for headlights there are for European countries. I’ve only seen it in a few trucks for towing since weight at the back can cause the angle of the headlights to shine directly into other driver’s line of sight.
sadisticamichaels@reddit
I don't think you understand. If people are flashing their lights at you because you are blinding them with your lights. YOUR LIGHTS ARE THE PROBLEM.
BeanerCounter@reddit
You’re an idiot.
redd_hott@reddit
Nothing to fix. Working as intended. They are just brighter…
sadisticamichaels@reddit
Lol you just mentioned that you are bright lighting people enough that they flash their lights at you to let you know that you are being an accidental asshole and you respond by being an intentional asshole. You probably have paper tags.
redd_hott@reddit
It’s country roads if people don’t know how angles work there really isn’t any help for them. I’m not turning my lights off or pointing them so low I can’t see anything. lol no paper tags owner here but make your assumptions.
JamBonesIII@reddit
I feel like it's a lovely mix of both that and people not even using their lights
BlazinAzn38@reddit
It’s how big cars have gotten too. All the trucks in DFW have their lights at eyeball level if you’re in a compact SUV or smaller
Isamu29@reddit
No it’s not the brighter lights it’s idiots with all their lights on and the brights and it’s getting silly. I want a rally car light pod on my hood with the brightest led pod lights I can find at this point.
truth-4-sale@reddit
Drivng on a Highway, when the coming vehicle wouldn't dim their lights, I waited until I was almost upon them, and then I turned on my brights.
I wouldn't do that now, with all of the crazies with firearms out there...
tabrizzi@reddit
It's not hig beams, just cars with those ultra bright LED lights. Even in the daytime, they're blinding. Those are many times brighter than your normal high beam.
truth-4-sale@reddit
I HATE THE NEW BRIGHT HEADLIGHTS ! ! ! !
WaffleIronMadness@reddit
I get brighted on my late night drive home a few times a week just for me to flash my high beams and they realize, nope, my lights are just super bright. I feel bad but what can I do?
Arrgh98@reddit
I saw the US mail truck today running high beams during the day. 🤨
Artemus_Hackwell@reddit
Poorly calibrated / aimed.
SHADOWJACK2112@reddit
Those same idiots can't be bothered to turn on their headlights in the rain/fog.
2lit_@reddit
I honestly think it’s a mixture of both
Maltempest@reddit
I came here to say this. Also, when these already bright lighted truck are lifted the lights are not readjusted for that height.
SyllabubInfamous8284@reddit
During the day, DRL is the high beams at reduced intensity.
Raiderboy105@reddit
I would much rather police prioritize pulling over these people versus other violations, because I can't defensively drive to avoid someone who tailgates with high beams, and trying to switch lanes while blinded isn't very safe either.
socksinmyass@reddit
so a regular at my coffee shop is a cop and i actually asked him if bright headlights have been a growing issue and he said that it's a bit complex because there's no regulation on how bright the bulbs are and they just get brighter and brighter so it's a bit complicated to pull these people over. he said that he's pulled dozens of people over in the past because he thought they were driving with their brights on but it was just the normal setting so he couldn't write them a ticket.
_WhataNick2_@reddit
I was at a red light behind a newer Escalade that has the single red LEDs going down each side as the brake and signal lights. Those things themselves were burning my eyes from how bright they were, couldn't imagine how bright the lights out front were. 🫠
OddSand7870@reddit
I think a lot of them are auto dimming now. And they probably don’t work correctly.
InternetsIsBoring@reddit
Yeah, my friend leaves hers on in her Tesla. Annoying AF.
cletusbob@reddit
Awww yes! I had a badass 1987 Lincoln that auto dimmed! Freaked me out the first time!
cletusbob@reddit
Awww yes! I had a badass 1987 Lincoln that auto dimmed! Freaked me out the first time!
InternetsIsBoring@reddit
Maaaan, I noticed the drivers leave their lights on auto and auto sucks. I get blinded walking my dogs because they don't adjust for people.
dallasdude@reddit
I drive a mid size SUV. Couple days ago I parked nose to nose with a new Cadillac Escalade. My eyes are level with the bumper, and the drivers seat of that Escalade sits way higher than my seat in a mid size SUV. The thing looked like a damn semi truck it was so big. I’m sure the headlights are bright as the sun and pointed straight into your eyes
drdonger60@reddit
It’s a lot of older cars(mainly trucks and suvs) with HID kids and brighter light bulbs. Newer cars have projectors and cutoffs and auto high beams.
spl4tterb0x@reddit
I suspect some of it is automatic dommers.. I have the feature on both my newer cars and when trying them out they didn't seem to dim quite as soon as I would like for an oncoming driver. Maybe some brands do a good job, and some don't. That said, folks need to not set their brights by default.
FollowingNo4648@reddit
My high beams automatically come on in my car and there is no way to turn them off. I absolutely hate it.
JeffTheJockey@reddit
A lot of newer cars have automatic brights that turn on based on outside light levels that aren’t always the best at turning off when necessary.
As far as the trucks are concerned a lot of them do have brighter headlights, but in most cases they only look brighter because truck headlights are closer/at eye level with sedans and other lower to the ground cars.
nomnomnompizza@reddit
Toyota misaligned the headlights on some Highlanders. Not crazy to think this is happening more often with the overall drop in car build quality.
redd_hott@reddit
It’s just brighter lights most of the time. Not high beams.
Happens to me a lot and I drive a Corolla that has the headlights properly aimed so they aren’t that high up.
Someone will flash their brights at me so I show them mine too and then they understand that they are just at a bad angle. Shit happens. But don’t blind me because you are dumb lol
Cnote75060@reddit
It's not just high beams on. Not sure whose brainiac idea it was to use the high- beam lights as the daytime running lights but that's a huge problem too. Especially when drivers only use them instead of fully turning on there lights. It's unnerving to see headlights coming up behind you only for the car to disappear in the pre-dawn light as the vehichle goes by with no other lights on. If you drive Hwy 161 north out of Grand Prairie, you know what I'm talking about.
cletusbob@reddit
It helps me to put my sun visor down! Yes at night!
TinyTiger5@reddit
Used to be you flashed you high beam at some one in the oncoming lane and they would turn off their high beam, not any more.
nawfy85@reddit
A lot of high beam driving mofos
Top_Bus_6246@reddit
they are way brighter. I think it should be regulated
givemegumbo@reddit
Pretty sure shits just getting brighter and brighter with tech. Sucks.
Adventurous-Gur7524@reddit
Nowadays new vehicles are already coming with stock bright led’s. Then there’s people who have their high beams on and / or have after market led’s.
pcra18@reddit
I’ve noticed it’s either all lights totally off, or just high beams on. I’ve been seeing a lot more high beams during the day too
FreshStartLiving@reddit
Both
12_yo_d@reddit
It’s not just you. People with Altimas with halogen headlights think they can drive with their high beams because of all the new LEDs.
Unusual-Disaster2866@reddit
Not just you, just more people being assholes on the road not giving a single care in the world except for themselves.
