How much of their musical opinions was just Mike Judge giving his own through them?

I get the impression probably the majority of them were instead of whatever was in character for them. Although he no doubt intentionally overplayed the hate for Journey/Michael Bolton/Sam Harris and others they were savage to.

Obviously his own tastes seeps through often, but on the other hand B&B have a strong metal bias which isn't necessarily Judge's taste. You can tell by the music (and video) almost straight away whether they like it, I doubt Judge is that "snap-judgmental" in real-life.
69upsidedownis96@reddit
B&B are rightfully described as metal heads, but ironically, they've mocked a fair amount of metal bands. Their most respected genres have definitely been hip-hop and rap.
Numerous_Block_9662@reddit
Certainly but it's got a lot to do with the style of metal e.g thrash is good, glam sucks.
mosurabb@reddit
They totally shit on Entombed though, that was great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yGaY_HhxV8

Mike Judge also named a character on Office Space Michael Bolton. There was nothing wrong with that name until that no-talent ass-clown became famous and started winning Grammys.
redjedia@reddit
Bolton has plenty of talent. He once sang a parody of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?” for John Oliver’s show, and for my money, he did a great job of keeping a straight face while singing the sillier lyrics. (It’s in the video about the IRS. The whole segment is great, but you are free to fast-forward to the song if you want.)

Same deal with his cameo in “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” too. (Great movie, and exceedingly overlooked.)

“Why should I have to change my name? He’s the one who sucks.”
JohnnyYouTaTas@reddit
You know, you can just call me Mike.
Grundle95@reddit
The way the Bobs’ whole demeanor changed as soon as he said that was perfect
genericusername7865@reddit
Dude unemployed himself. Lol
HeyHo__LetsGo@reddit
For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings 'When A Man Loves A Woman’.
BadMan125ty@reddit
I think Mike admitted to it.
tiddertag@reddit
What is there to admit to? It's obviously the opinions of the show's creators. You think cartoon characters are real with opinions of their own?
SuspendedSentence1@reddit
Well, it’s possible that the writers are creating characters with different opinions for the purpose of comedy. Hence the question.
BadMan125ty@reddit
What?! Lol
CyberTyrantX1@reddit
Maybe I'm biased because I can't stand Post Malone but I'm fairly confident he isnt a post malone fan because Beavis and Butthead ripped apart Circles in one of the newer episodes
Beavis: Woah, she doesn't have a mouth
Butthead: yeah, he finally found a chick who can't tell him his music sucks.
DDHDoubleIPA@reddit
I think Mike Judge liked The Bee Gees as a kid, so it would make sense that B&B would think is cool.
BeefwagonDiscs@reddit
You could tell which bands he liked a lot when neither of them would say anything & you'd hear like 30 seconds of just music. Butthole surfers & faith no more come to mind.
There were a lot of albums I bought when I was a kid bc I liked a song or two i heard on beavis & butthead.
loonieodog@reddit
Rob Zombie has stated that his band owed a lot to Beavis and Butthead and that many bands would not have broken out of not for their approval.
Grundle95@reddit
Conversely they also didn’t say much when they really hated the video and wanted to let it speak for itself, like with Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice’s “I Love You”
ThreadbareAdjustment@reddit (OP)
"whoa, his shirt said Mr. Bunghole!" Was a great gag in a Faith No More video I didn't get as a kid at the time sadly.
BeefwagonDiscs@reddit
Same here. Better late than never though. I got hooked on Bungle when they did the show at the library during covid.
tiddertag@reddit
Well, Beavis and Butthead were fictional cartoon characters so obviously they weren't giving their own opinions.

tcharris3@reddit
Although I think some of the opinions were Mike’s, I think the majority of the commentary were through the characters and how they probably would perceive the video and artists and song
justhereforthemuktuk@reddit
Fictional characters don't always agree with their creators. I don't expect that Mike Judge can't resist putting his index finger onto a spinning saw blade, nor does he become an unholy prophet upon the ingestion of coffee or sugar. Mike created BnB, so they say what he wants them to say. But to believe that they think like him and have the same taste is not realistic. Didn't he also create McVicker, Van Driessen, Stewart and Todd? Very different guys with very different tastes. Dang ol' Porky's Butthole.
thejohnmc963@reddit
Uh.. it’s Mikes show so …..
WhiskeyAndNoodles@reddit
A good amount. BnB would for sure like bands such as Death and Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel and Carcass but they ripped inti em on the show. I guess Judge just wasn't into death metal. Beavis and Butthead almost certainly would be though
crg222@reddit
That was all a “straw man” front for Mike Judge’s opinions.
Anson’s band were a big draw where I lived, and you had no idea that the bassist was a tastemaker.
_PartyAttheMoonTower@reddit
Well, I could safely say he wasn't a Winger fan.
Syrric_UDL@reddit
Look up old judge interviews on YouTube, I remember something along the lines of him saying he would just riff and most opinions were his
