I was just curious if anybody remembers how big of a deal the crying game was? Also, the Gods Must Be Crazy was also huge. That memory just popped in my head. Back in the day Blockbusters were for real stand outside until the movie starts - and ppl went bonkers for TGMBC✌🏽
Lead-Forsaken@reddit
Ah, but have you seen the Gods must be Crazy 2? Even more hilarious than the first.
AstronomerBrave4909@reddit
I learnt from that movie except that honey badgers are stubborn, and also stubborn, but mostly stubborn.
Commercial-Novel-786@reddit
I never knew there were sequels. And I was a massive fan of that movie. I must have watched it a couple dozen times.
Lead-Forsaken@reddit
Oh, are you in for a TREAT. So many classic moments in 2.

I lived in BFE when the Crying Game came out. I went to see it in the theater with a couple of friends who stayed in town after classes ends for the summer . When "the reveal" happened, 90 percent of the theater stood up really dramatically and walked out. It took me until just a few years ago to realize that this was probably a really backward organized attempt at protest. "We're going to spend to price of a Friday night movie ticket to waste an hour and show you we're bigots".
In_The_End_63@reddit
Where are they all now? Oh yeah. First they came for ... know it.
JoshWestNOLA@reddit
Yeah I remember the entire audience gasping.
snark_maiden@reddit
Yup, I remember The Crying Game and the twist! And then the actor from Crying Game (not Stephen Rea) had a big role in the Stargate movie.
cometshoney@reddit
Jaye Davidson. I've watched Stargate so many times...too many times...lol.

In 1992 I was sent to the Replacement Battalion for the 82nd Airborne. Not much going in… pretend to pick up trash, move some rocks around. One afternoon they march us to the movie theater and we were all stoked… a nice diversion.
We watched The Crying Game. I had never, and will never again, be involved in a spontaneous riot that took place when that dick popped out.
TXFlyer71@reddit
Having worked at AMC during the Crying Game I’d slip into the theater during “that scene” just to hear the audible gasps!
notsicktoday@reddit
The Crying Game was a huge deal. I remember the TV commercials saying "don't spoil the secret" or something along those lines.
UsernameForgotten100@reddit
That twist at the end was wild, but I don’t remember anything at all about the rest of the movie.
ApresMoiLuhDeluge@reddit
my dad fell out of his chair it was hilarious.
Alansmithee69@reddit
I love The Gods Must Be Crazy I and II.
OldBanjoFrog@reddit
Love those movies
Haunt_Fox@reddit
I heard there's a third one that involves a friendly hopping Chinese vampire
2K84Man@reddit
I saw II in the theater
Alansmithee69@reddit
The lead actress in II was beautiful. The two kids were adorable! I want one of those planes.
MyriVerse2@reddit
It really was not that big of a deal, just hype. Sure, it made a lot of profit, because it cost almost nothing to make, but it really didn't sell many tickets.
A_Tom_McWedgie@reddit
I only saw the first half of the Crying Game, but damn, that chick was hot!
I still think about her a lot - if you know what I mean.
forchristssakesrita@reddit
If The Crying Game came out now, wow, not sure wtf would go down!
Lead-Forsaken@reddit
Lots of crying, for sure.
TexasTokyo@reddit
I know I loved that and the sequel. But I can’t remember anything about the films except for the Coke bottle.
Lead-Forsaken@reddit
I think a certain honey badger would be very offended at being forgotten. ;-)
shoejunk@reddit
I didn’t see the gods must be crazy in theaters but it was one of those movies we recorded to vhs and watched over and over. It was so good, a family favorite.
ceekjones@reddit
The Crying Game is a remarkably progressive movie for its time. It introduced the normies to a legitimate concept of femininity -- and gave inspiration and validation to many young (adult) boys.
Schyznik@reddit
Yep. I told my roommates about the surprise in Crying Game because I was always going to art house movies they had no interest in seeing and figured this one was no different. Then it became a big deal and they gave me a hard time about ruining it for them.
Simple-Purpose-899@reddit
The Crying Game will forever be the worst movie I've ever seen, or will ever see in my lifetime.
overmonk@reddit
I remember the hype but I never saw it.
schnu44@reddit
I remember vividly how big a deal The Crying Game was in early 93. My roommates saw it a few days before me and i insisted they didn’t reveal it to me.
When i actually saw it with my GF at the time, me and the guy I was next to in the theatre kept asking “is that the secret?”
Then we saw it and it was “ah that’s the secret!”
Outrageous-Advice384@reddit
Yes the Crying Game. I use the term “He was likely ‘Crying Gamed’”more recently than, well, never before. Ive said it recently to describe some politicians.
ApprehensiveCream571@reddit
I was obsessed with the Crying Game when it came out my freshman year of college. I went to see it like 7 times and had to travel from the suburbs into the city to see it via bus, so it was a pain to do but worth it. I'm going to have to watch it again for old times sake.
ZestySest@reddit
No spoilers! I haven't seen Crying Gane yet.
ROUNDtheW@reddit
Make it a full day affair and watch it with Just One of the Guys and Juwanna Man back-to-back-to-nack
jonsca@reddit
I've still never seen The Crying Game, but how could no one have figured it out lol
haileyskydiamonds@reddit
Yeah, my friends and I went to see it when we were 14 or 15 just because the Queen B of our group thought it was sophisticated to go see those Oscar nominated movies that no one ever really goes to see.
Let’s just say the theater was packed >!and suddenly, there IT was, and none of us had ever seen such a thing before. My first thought was that Dill was terribly deformed, lol…I was wondering where her boobs had gone when the camera panned lower and my mind was not prepared.!<
These were not things we talked about back then. >!Maybe in hushed whispers when trying to imagine things, but other than that, it was just not discussed, period. !<
Techchick_Somewhere@reddit
Ok same. I thought I was the only one.
truthcopy@reddit
Those were different times.

Jamie Uys was already a household name in SA when gods came out. I have mixed feelings about it as a Vorster-era South African. it's so, so South African. but with all the problematic things about being just that.
however, the thing of him getting out every few hundred feet to open a gate did me in. my dad had a friend who did exactly that, only instead of using the koppies to keep the car busy, he'd crank the wheel over, tie it in place and leave it to run in circles until he was ready to get back in. and the car winched up into a tree thing ... oh ja.
people who enjoyed it might also get a kick out of white wedding from the post-apartheid era, which I also love.
kabekew@reddit
Crying Game, Silence of the Lambs, Fargo, Shawshank Redemption, Jurassic Park, the early-mid 90's were peak cinema.
Gobucks21911@reddit
Damn, I can’t count how many times I watched The Crying Game. Loved that movie!
Immediate-Agency6101@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the comments- it feels nice to bullshit about the olden times lol.
Error262_USRnotfound@reddit
Just for the heck of it I watched gods must be crazy in the last few yrs…I still giggled a little , but enjoy cannabis and have the humor of a 14yrld 🤷🏻♂️

Strong-Raspberry5@reddit
I still say ayiyiyiyi.
Ok_Entrepreneur_8509@reddit
I watched the gods must be crazy constantly. I still quote it from time to time.
lowfreq33@reddit
The. Thing Game was a big deal, but I don’t remember the other one being like that, at least in theaters. It got pretty popular when it hit cable though. It was on HBO all the time, and they would only have like 12 movies every month. That one seemed to always be on.
Andrewross_@reddit
If you sync up The Crying Game soundtrack with The Gods Must be Crazy it’s wild.
