Ye Olde Techno

Hello fellow grown-ups,
I am building a playlist of some good techno classics that we were lucky enough to grow up with.
Think back to the days of Napster, what were your favorite beats?
What looked good on the Winamp visualizer?
iamsolow1@reddit
Set U Free - Planet Soul (1996)
katakana@reddit
I stated making a Spotify play list a while back. Added the ones mentioned in the tread so far. 1999

I appreciate you. Keep spreading the good vibes!
katakana@reddit
What a nice thing to say, thank you!
JustifiedOld@reddit
FWIW Ben Neill, Hevia, and Martyn Bennett are artists who harnessed their singular musical talents (trumpet, bagpipe, violin etc) as midi triggers to meld into techno soundscapes. Check them out!

Some classics (lol sorry, couldn't resist on that last one):
Ok_Pea_6054@reddit
I still rock with Smack My Bitch Up and Firestarter, they were the shit!
LordZantarXXIII@reddit
Orbital - The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
Planetofthought@reddit
Did you know that The Immortals are Lords of Acid?
VVrayth@reddit
I didn't!
vapre@reddit
The filter version was from the Spawn soundtrack where they had metal/industrial acts pair up with electronic acts. Good soundtrack.
gtdishboy@reddit
We have similar tastes đ€
Allaplgy@reddit
I guess that depends on what you mean by "techno".
I'm gonna assume you mean anything "electronic" from the 90s and early 2ks.
So yeah... In no particular order or genre...
Yum Yum - The Vision
Joshua Ryan - Pistol Whip
Chemical Brothers - Setting Sun
Infected Mushroom - BP Empire (the album)
Rinkadink - Ultima (Flaming Hoons Mix)
Fluke - Atom Bomb
ColdCut - Natural Rhythm
The Prodigy - Claustrophobic Sting
Shpongle - Star Shpongled Banner
TurboJorts@reddit
I'm sure he doesn't mean Jeff Mills and Laurent Garnier.
(For those of us who know)
DrewBaron80@reddit
I was always more of a drum n bass guy, but Adam Beyer and Richie Hawtin were awesome.
Allaplgy@reddit
Love me some Jeff. But yeah, that was my assumption. He meant "techno" not techno.
TurboJorts@reddit
Always the case. I work with people my age (who should know better) who still call all electronic music "techno". I suppose that's less offensive than the other who call it all "EDM".
Allaplgy@reddit
Why is that offensive? It's kind of the opposite of "techno" in that it was a term created to describe the broadest overarching genre of syncopated beat, danceable "electronic" music, from tech to trance to house to dubstep, and then got co-opted to be a genre of it's own apparently.
I didn't like it when it first started gaining popularity, since my experience with it was people calling raves "Electronic Dance Music Eventsâą" because they felt "raves" had bad connotations relating to drugs, and I was like "a rave by any other name is still a rave."
TurboJorts@reddit
Just mildy "offensive" because it took a bunch of existing genres that could be wildly different (say, drum & bass and trance) and put them all under an umbrella term invented for and by people not involved with the original genres. It didn't help that "EDM" (the specific genre) gained popularity at the same time and all the people who had been making dance music for 30 years were in the same category as festival bro-step, skrillex etc.
It would be like saying country, blues, rock and punk all belong in the same genre because they are made with guitars.
Allaplgy@reddit
Weirdest part is that reddit is the only place I've seen EDM referred to as a specific genre.
It's also very "off my lawn" to complain about Skrillex and such. It's not your cup of tea, that's fine. But it's still music.
It's more like saying punk, blues rock, grunge, metal, and soft rock are all "rock." They are. They are also very much their own thing.
One thing I've always hated about my fellow EDM enjoyers is the obsession with genre.
TurboJorts@reddit
EDM, as a term for modern dance music is everywhere. From rolling stone to spin to vanity fair. It's not just reddit.
And its not about genre purity, it's about an accurate description. I can tell the difference between techno, house and tech house. Each of those scenes are unique
Allaplgy@reddit
I think you misunderstood me. I meant that I've only heard "EDM" as a specific genre of, well, EDM, on reddit. I know there are differences between tech, tech house, jacking house, funky house, minimal tech, tech trance, etc. This might also mean I misunderstood you and thought you were referring to "EDM" as a specific genre.

I've given up on trying to define techno to anyone, especially house music.
If you want to hate life, search Spotify for "house music."
noelesque@reddit
My son who is seven is really into Insomnia by Faithless, so I have fulfilled my obligation to this post.
LordZantarXXIII@reddit
Great tracks! Ima add Aphex Twin - Polynomial-C to the mix
Allaplgy@reddit
Oool. Yeah, that's a good'n.
gesis@reddit
Gotta get some Cassius and Stardust in there. We used to listen to Alien Factory â Freak Tonight at LAN parties.
Allaplgy@reddit
These were just the random ones that popped in my head. I've forgotten more music than I remember. Was a DJ for many years, and mostly remembered tracks by what the sleeve/label looked like.
In fact, when I moved to CDJs from vinyl, I would burn CDs of downloaded music, and just draw something random on them with a sharpie. Much easier to remember "# 3 on the one with stars" than some random name on a list.

agentmkultra666@reddit
Itâs also in a scene in Nowhere (though not on the actual soundtrack) which is how I found it. Honestly 90s movies had the best soundtracks/music in them!

Common mistake with that version of âEnjoy The Silence.â It wasnât even a remix of the DM original, but an all-new recording. While it appears on Sasha & Digweedâs Northern Exposure: Expeditions mix album, the track itself was âThe Silence (Tekara Remix)â by Mike Koglin.

I heard this one techno song that went like "dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum"
And then this other part came in and it was like "dadaLA dum, dadaLA dum, dadaLA dum, dadaLA dum"
And then there's always some kinda high-pitched noise, y'know? Or like a siren that's like "doodoo da DOOdoo, doodoo da DOOdoo, doodoo da DOOdoo, doodoo da DOOdoo"
And of course they have to put in the obligatory old movie quote from some sci-fi movie. It's like "THE SYSTEM IS DOWN. THE SYSTEM IS DOWN."
I love lightswitch raves.

I had a CD that I technically stole from my brother, that was all techno versions of Sesame Street songs. It got stolen out of my car with about 30 other cds.

Sidebar question: Is what we know as techno different from the EDM the youts are into?
Last_Nothing_9117@reddit
It is and it isnât. Modern day EDM is a progression of what we referred to as âtechnoâ back in our day as technology has advanced enabling better production with more options, leading to more subgenres now than what we had back then.
The most notable change is the actual art of DJâing⊠back when a DJ would gauge and engage the crowd by actively selecting the vinyl that would be played next when performing live. This is truly how magical moments could occur. Now, EDM live sets are pre-mixed, especially in large festivals for light and stage coordination.
I remember when DJs would have a reputation for being amazing live (Bad Boy Bill) or not good behind the decks at all (Keoki). DJing used to be an art. Now itâs just pre-produced showmanship.
