I was told not to cheap out on my PSU. Is the Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 850 W 80+ Gold really that bad?

I was told to get a nicer PSU. Is it really worth it? Whats wrong with the one I have picked out?
here is my full build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XNVWwY

No you don't want the gf1 it was a known model where they swapped out parts. Go with the pure power m 12 850watt, xpg core reactor ii 850 watt, thermaltake gf3 850 watt, asrock sl-850g, rm850x, or rm850e (2025). Those are all better models that I would put in my pc.

Thanks for the insight. Out of the ones you listed do you have a suggestion that will include the proper cable for a 5070? I heard some power supplies don't include it? Thanks again
Ambitious_Aide5050@reddit
Just about all those should have the atx 3.1 cable included which is the newest version. Even a atx 3.0 will be fine for the 5070 but since you're already buying new I'd personally pick one with the atx 3.1 cable just to have the newest version 👍
Primus_is_OK_I_guess@reddit
The cable is actually identical between 3.0 and 3.1. The difference is in the socket.
Gloomy_Rice_4122@reddit (OP)
Perfect. I think i'm going with the asrock sl-850g!
Ambitious_Aide5050@reddit
Just want to let you know I saw your other post, I also own the Thermalright PS120 SE and it is a beast!! Super efficient at cooling!! But I will say I wish I would of spent the extra $9 and bought the EVO version that performs slightly cooler, has better (quieter) fans, and looks a little more sleek!

Gloomy_Rice_4122@reddit (OP)
Sweet i'll make sure to pick up the evo version!
Ambitious_Aide5050@reddit
That would be my top choice out of all those! It's only $119 on Newegg. I own the xpg core reactor ii, but I got mine before the asrock hit the market. It has some of the highest ratings on Cybernetics and priced right.
Forward_Drop303@reddit
or the Vetroo 850w for even less
Ambitious_Aide5050@reddit
I don't know anything about that one except hardware busters removed it from its recommendations which is enough for me to pass.. but it might be good I just know nothing about Vetroo
Wooshio@reddit
Nothing. It's good great protection features. People just obsess over whichever PSU tier list and think they need God tier PSU or their system will blow up. 90% chance you have zero issues with that PSU over the next decade.
Particular-Poem-7085@reddit
I just get one from corsair or seasonic so I don’t have to think about it.
curiousdugong@reddit
Corsair sells some really terrible PSU’s too, like the CX line. They produce nothing
Seasonic is at least an OEM and produces many of the units for Corsair’s high-end units. But Corsair alsocuses CWT and Super flower.
I like the Seasonic Focus Series and Super Flower Leadex VII platforms.
TeeSki17@reddit
Ive been running a Cosair CX600 in my racing rig PC since 2017. It hasn't failed me yet.
Jeep-Eep@reddit
Leadex VII should be your default choice for PSU tbh unless you can get a deal on something like one of FSP's titaniums.
Redacted_Reason@reddit
Have an FSP Hydro TI Pro 1000W, which is Titanium. Expensive, but I love it. It’s a chart-topper in all categories like efficiency and noise for a reason.
Jeep-Eep@reddit
That's the one that got away from me this build, if I had been slightly faster I could have landed one for 33% off.
Redacted_Reason@reddit
I’d have to agree with that. I was looking over all the values gathered during tests of PSUs and kept seeing it get the #1 spot over and over. Usually there’s a lot of back-and-forth between the top spots, as there is in the 1200W category and 850W category
Fightmemod@reddit
That tier list is trash and way out of date. I just built a new pc back in November and most of the models listed were old as dirt.
unnamedwastaken@reddit
I really like the one on zzt buildhelp. Gives options for all budgets.
damastaGR@reddit
Well, tell that to my friend...
nas2k21@reddit
an r 5 and 3060, it dont matter, you wont tax it that bad the systems cheap, dont worry, new top r9 or x3d chip with a 90ti, dont take any risk, spend an extra \~$40 on a top psu
NovelValue7311@reddit
No. I used a Thermaltake smart (i think its c or d teir on most lists) with a bad powerstrip. I've had zero issues with all kinds out power outages and surges.Â
You'll be fine
nam292@reddit
I spent less than $20 on a bronze 550w. Works just fine.
Current-Row1444@reddit
A no name brand grey box PSU? Well it's your funeral man
ToborWar57@reddit
Just get a reputable brand like Corsair ... and whoever told you to not cheap-out on the PSU was 1000% correct, it's the heart of your rig! A lot on here want to tell you go cheap (no, it won't be fine), the other half says buy exorbitantly over priced 1000w ... lmao. Go with tried and true brands with good customer service.
Current-Row1444@reddit
All Corsair PSUs are not good. The good line of PSUs is the RX line
EmploymentOk3852@reddit
evga has lifetime warranty
Additional-Mammoth83@reddit
People act like if you don’t get a god PSU your whole pc is doomed. Just don’t get like a 20$ one and you should be fine as long as you do your research.
BordenZuheckii@reddit
I’ve never heard anyone complain about Corsair’s PSUs, so that’s all I’ve ever used and recommended.
kaje@reddit
$100 isn't really cheaping on a PSU, but there are other PSUs with a better reputation that you can find reviews on for a similar price. Should ATX 3.1 on the PSU as well for the proper cable to connect to a 5070.
Gloomy_Rice_4122@reddit (OP)
What is the proper cable I should be looking for?
Redacted_Reason@reddit
12VHPWR or 12V2x6
Financial_Recipe@reddit
Swap out that PSU for Super Flower Leadex III 850w 3.1 atx. The one you chose has lower quality parts than the original one.
Jeep-Eep@reddit
Your goto in a build should honestly be the Leadex VII, long proven family when it was marketed under EVGA; only reason otherwise is high level sale from good marque of similar or better performance.
Financial_Recipe@reddit
Super Flower and EVGA have been a long time partnership and I've worked on many systems that had SF, EVGA and those PSUs just hold.Â
Jeep-Eep@reddit
Yeah, precisely. It's a well proven design linage.
pacoLL3@reddit
You should never cheap out on the PSU, but reddit is the extreme opposite where people are recommending way oversized PSUs for absolutely zero reason.
A solid 650W-750 PSU is doing it's job for 99,99% of people.
No reason to get 650W for an 4060/7600, 750W for an 9070 or 850W for an 9070XT/5070TI.
beirch@reddit
There is one reason: If you want an especially silent system. An overspeced PSU will need a higher load before the fan kicks in.
Jeep-Eep@reddit
And it leaves headspace for future parts and reduces wear and tear.
Rizenshine@reddit
This reminds me of ProZD's water subreddit meme where he discovers a sub about water and becomes super pretentious about drinking water variants.
Any Gold PSU is fine. The only difference is modularity and cables/lengths. Oh and people that would fight tooth and nail against that statement.
HisAnger@reddit
Psu look good, but consider seasonic ... they specialize in psu and make them for decades. What is extremely important they own factories, and not order them to cheapest supplier.
StomachAromatic@reddit
Do not skimp on the power supply. Don't over buy, but do not go cheap.
YaKkO221@reddit
It won’t matter, man. Buy whatever you want as long as it will support your components….these dudes think every sub par PSU is gonna explode.
TheDepep1@reddit
I used that psu for like 7 years. Still works good.
PaddyBoy1994@reddit
Thermaltake is fine in my experience. Had an 850 from them for years before I swapped to a 1000 when I went to twin GTX1080s.
YertlesTurtleTower@reddit
https://www.lttlabs.com/categories/power-supplies
This is a great resource for power supplies. I returned the 1000w version of the TR GF1 because it failed multiple times for the LTT Labs. I went with an NZXT C1000 because it passed all their tests.
bertrenolds5@reddit
Spend a little more and get the rm850x
LemonOwl_@reddit
GF1 line is all A(+) except 2024 Premium which is B speculative (no testing done) according to SPL's psu tier list.
IntradayGuy@reddit
using a 750 W TT Gold plus, with a i7 and 5070 TI... TT are good
Milios12@reddit
Literally who cares, it will likely outlast the rest of your components anyway
Pythonmsh@reddit
My experience with thermaltake psu's isn't the best. Same with my brother. Just spend the money on a better PSU, it's one part you dont cheap out on.
skyfishgoo@reddit
it's not awful, but on the
https://www.cybenetics.com/index.php?option=psu-performance-database
there are a metric ton of better ones to choose from.
as a thermaltake brand product goes, it's one of their better ones, tho.
BaronB@reddit
Lots of people love the Thermaltake PSUs because they're always one of the least expensive options, and the Toughpower models in particular are well known for being surprisingly efficient, generally besting the 80+ rating they have.
They're also loud, and die very easily due to having basically zero protections against brown outs. Meaning if you live someplace where your power flickers, or goes out, they have a very high chance of dying, and may take some other hardware with it. I always suggest against Thermaltake PSUs unless you are extremely budget constrained, or live someplace with very stable power. A friend of mine swore by Thermaltake PSUs for the last decade ... and has had to replace his system roughly every year or two because his systems keep dying. He doesn't use Thermaltake anymore.
MSI PSUs were recently frequently recommended by a lot of people (myself included) because they also reviewed quite well, but they're rebadged Thermaltake PSUs and thus suffer from exactly the same issues.
The beQuiet Pure Power 12M, ADATA Core Reactor II, and Enermax Revolution D.F. 12 are all very high quality PSUs that are often less than competitors at similar quality levels. They kind of cycle as to which one is on sale at any time. Though at the moment they're all around the $110 to $125 price range, which puts them on par with the similar Corsair RM850e (though I'd argue all three are slightly above the lower wattage RMe models). They also all have the 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 connectors and cables, which is what the Nvidia RTX 5000 series GPUs use. Otherwise you'd have to use the PCIe power adapter that'll come with the GPU, which is fine, but clunky for cable management.
...
The Vetroo PSUs others have mentioned are very new, and the 1000W model has a single review that was impressed with it, especially how quiet it was. But they also got a review sample sent to them by Vetroo directly, and real world users haven't seem to be quite as happy with them. If other peoples' arguments for staying with the Thermaltake have swayed you to stick with it, and you aren't concerned with brown outs, maybe consider the Vetroo as it's even less expensive.
laffer1@reddit
TT power supplies tend to come with very short cables. Depending on your case layout, that can suck.
aragorn18@reddit
The GF1 is rated A or A+ in the PSU Tier List. It's a great power supply.
Financial_Recipe@reddit
They've added beware of 2024 edition, so it's not a good choice. They used lower quality parts for that PSU.
aragorn18@reddit
You're right. That is my oversight. They do, however, give it a provision rating of B.
Forward_Drop303@reddit
No it isn't, see the note and big bold lettering
Tinney3@reddit
That model you have is listed as at least a Tier A. I'd say you're set unless you find a cheaper one with the same tier.
Quality PSUs are a good investment and can survive multiple builds. Longest I had mine was 6 years, lasted 3 major build upgrades and only got replaced because it didn't have two PCIE 8pins, else I still would've still used it. Buying a quality PSU once and ideally a bit overspecced if you'll be upgrading in the future is a good move.
Forward_Drop303@reddit
I recommend the Vetroo 850w PSU
dr1ppyblob@reddit
The GF1 2024 is a cost down version of the GF A3. It is not the same as the regular A tier GF1. There are also no reviews other than internal hardware shots.
I also changes the case since 170$ for a 4000d AF + RGB fans is absurd.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CcKXWc
Also a 400$ 7800x3d makes much more sense here.
