CA has better social safety net/services for vulnerable people. Mental illness is high among homeless and they often self medicate with drugs. The real drug problem is in Appalachia. The real homeless problems are in states that don't even bother trying to help, so they migrate to a more friendly state
It's because you only get those stories. California has homeless but they're so concentrated into small parts within cities you'd never know unless you go there. It's got the best climate in the world, a spectacular social safety net, excellent food, the best national parks in the country, beaches, mountains, forests, hunting, fishing. California has the best parts of everything people want to do. People who dunk on California do so because they're miserable in their shithole states and people in California don't correct them because we're outside living our lives.
California doesn't measure success in averages only in the number of wealthy people it can generate, the govt there just considers the abject poverty of everyone else to be part of the agricultural runoff.
Because there being a massive drug and homeless problem creates a bunch of governmwnt programs that employ a ton of people, if the problem was solved or significantly reduced those people would have to find new jobs.
Precisely. Would you rather live in a small house in a village in the Alps where there is no crime and everyone believes the same things, or a multi million dollar mansion in LA, but all your neighbors are crack heads, foreigners who barely speak English, and blue haired communists?
What do you mean, Anon? Number big good! Sure, number was getting bigger during the Gilded Age, the Bengali Famine and the Russian 90's anarchy, but that's details. What are you some sort of fascist, communist, or god-forbid, Keynisian!?!? If big number get big, it's good, all else is details.
Other states literally ship their homeless to CA, and many of those whom are not completely spun save up money for a bus ticket and ship themselves due to the weather and the services offered.
If CA cut off all entry from other states it wouldn't be as bad as it is.
That said. The state still fucking sucks unless you're a nepo baby because they favor business more than the narrative spin says and being working class is barely treading water here.
California has a weirdly perfect climate, it can get a bit hot but the weather basically always feels nice. I went on a road trip hiking through several national parks there and the ambient humidity and temperature made it feel like I was indoors at all times, not an exaggeration, it was kinda surreal.
It was probably even better before they fucked it all up inducing a permanent drought due to over-irrigation. Still, it's not hard to understand why they have towns there named "Paradise".
Their climate basically provides an automatic boost to general happiness, and while they are destroying their state with over-farming, the farms themselves are beautiful, just driving through miles and miles of vineyards is a fun experience in itself. Both the national parks, and forests there are gorgeous and most importantly diverse. The mountains and forests in my state aren't bad, but they all fit the same general template. Meanwhile in California they really have a different vibe from one to the next, it's like the perfect region for casual hikers.
Then you start to consider infrastructure. Where I live in the North East, winter means all roads, bridges and buildings are all slowly eroded every year and require constant maintenance and refurbishment, this requires a certain consistency from government. California doesn't really need to worry about this though, their stable climate means their roads are pretty much a one-and-done kind of thing, so they even do fancy stuff like having periodic emergency telephones along the way.
But this also leads to complacency, they do in fact need to manage their forests, but don't. Hence why the town named "Paradise" literally burned to the ground. It's a weird state but the good comes with the bad, with it being the entire pacific coastline, their economy prosperity was basically guaranteed no matter how much they mismanage it.
California is fucking huge, it is larger than many full-fledged countries. When people talk about the crime and drugs they are referring to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The reality is that the state has a wealth of different regions and subcultures. There are many people who live outside those two cities and have a decent life, you just don't hear about it on the news.
All of it. I live in CA. It's awful to be here. Work is non existential unless you want to work as a serf. You can't even start your own business without paying $800 for the paperwork filing annually. And our energy prices... Holy shit.
Sole prop is free in Cali, only LLC cost money. This is good so people don't make strings of empty, worthless LLC clogging up the bureaucracy because they don't pay anything enforceable.
Alas, my point is completely disproven because GDP and stock value are completely disentangled figures that cannot possibly overlap or affect the other in any sort of way.
"California's state and local government debt, including unfunded liabilities, is estimated at $1.6 trillion. This equates to roughly $125,000 of debt per California household. The state's total liabilities are also twice that of any other state, reaching $498 billion in fiscal year 2022. This includes both state and local government debt. Additionally, California has a significant unemployment insurance debt of $20 billion owed to the federal government."
Not related to your point, but what I find staggering in these democrat cities that have a high GDP is the income inequality levels.
These places have been run by people who claim to care more about the poor, minorities, handicapped, oppressed ect. They claim to have the answers to all these problems, have had almost total political control for decades, have the money from a huge prosperous tax base, why are these places such shitholes with homelessness, drugs, crime.....?
If you’re homeless where do you go? To a place with low economic viability and shitty weather or to a place with a booming economy and some of the best year round weather in the world? The homeless don’t leave for greener pastures because there aren’t any and plenty make the trip to cali.
But the amount of commerce and small business thriving BECAUSE of these tech corpos with fairytale stocks is still giant. The number of consumers employed by these giant companies is probably in 90th percentile
The value of the tech companies isn't part of the of the GDP. It's shit people don't actually see like the 85% of the world's almond supply is through California or an extension of it. As in, if you buy an Almond paste there's a good chance the Almond was sourced in California. You wouldn't know that of course cause you're a fucking retard.
Gavin is going to get fucking mauled in a presidential bid. Numbers aren’t as tangible to the average voter as the dirty needle hobo towns that are Californian cities.
Those big bucks belongs to Lockheed Martin & Israel though
You will never see a single dollar for public benefit, unlike much poorer countries even. So, if you're not an Israel politician, an American politician, or overall a businesses man, then why the fuck would you live in the US?
Cause 20% of the country is doing better than 90% of the world. I'm by no means rich but I could fuck off if I wanted into South America or Eastern Europe and live on passive dividend income for example.
Like, yeah if that 20% is upper middle-class is probably doing fucking great. The US is one of the best countries on earth if you are middle-upper class or higher, what's the point of discussing that when it's just a relative portion of the overall population
Wealth vs income. We both have the same lifestyle as income, but the US pays more which means our wealth can give us the same lifestyle or better than your income.
Not at all because the idea isnt to work at all. 20% isnt a made up number, it's a household income of 150k or more. 10% is 200k or higher. If we pretend a somewhat smart person invests 25% of their 200k income its 50k. At that point we can look at what is the average salary of the top 10% of a country. Mexico for example is about $64k USD a year ($30k pesos a month) which is equal to $1.06M in dividends at 6% which is a very safe number. $50k a year into the S&P500 at an average of 8% equals about 14 years needed before you have a sum large enough to convert to dividends. So if I wanted to live in Mexico as the same level as an attorney in the US (which is higher than $200k) without working I would need only 14 years in the US economy to achieve this. At 150k a year and $37500 savings it's only 16 years for this goal. If I wanted to remain in the US that 64k gives me the lifestyle of an average four year college degree.
This is why so many people come to the US for work. Because low taxes and high salaries means if you hustle you can make bank. These numbers I'm quoting are awful by the way because it's the assumption they are moronic enough to pay half their wage in mortgage and car loans. Americans keep working because they are without a doubt the most financially illiterate civilization not located in Africa on this Earth.
"Lmaoo if your country isn't a violent, greed-obsessed, car-dependent, dystopian corporate hellscape where everyone is fat, why would you want to live?! Amirite guyss?!"
