Need help getting my boyfriend a monitor
Posted by Latter_Humor6173@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 61 comments
Hello everyone! My boyfriend is planning on getting a pc sometime in the future and he asked me to get him a monitor for his upcoming birthday. I’m on a tight budget so i’m looking for something under $300. He likes games such as elden ring, silent hill, resident evil, minecraft, overwatch, ghost of tsushima, etc. I play games but only on my xbox, so i’m not familiar with what features/specs would be best for his monitor. Please help, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

get the dell G2724D its great for the price, (1440p, 165hz 1ms 27”) they also have student discounts if you’re in school, got mine for 152 bucks shipped i’m in Cali. you can get him 2 of these for a price of one if he wants a dual monitor setup. you could also have spare money leftover to buy him. a gaming mouse or some peripheral or accessories for his setup!
Latter_Humor6173@reddit (OP)
Definitely would appreciate a student discount haha & he did mention a dual monitor setup, I had overlooked it at first since i’m on a budget and thought maybe I could just get him a second one later on but I will definitely look into this! Thank you!

Just wanted to chime in and say this is really sweet and I hope he likes whatever you get him!

Thank you so much :,)!

Basically you are looking at a decent 1440p VA, I haven't researched VAs so I can't reccomend you like the other guys but I'm here to say that ips or TN is not the pick(unless a hardcore overwatch player, since va isnt great for esports and if he is competitive and wants to sacrifice some contrast for better movement representation he will wanna get an ips, TN if absolute hard-core gamer that doenst care about graphics and plays 1080p)
Latter_Humor6173@reddit (OP)
This is really helpful thank you!!
grapefruitsk@reddit
It really, really depends on what his system specifications will be. For 300$, you can get a very good monitor, but it depends on what his computer will be able to run.
I (and probably everyone else) would say a 1440p monitor would be the best choice. 27 or 32 inch, and probably 144hz.
I have a monitor that's essentially identical to this monitor, and it's great. My PC is in the 1800-2000$ range and I can take full advantage of the monitor.
The specs you'd be looking for, in my humble opinion are: 1440p, IPS, 144hz, 27" (or 32" if he prefers that).
I don't see that he plays many FPS games so I don't see a big reason to go with like 240hz or somethin' like that, the specs above are a good balance between image quality and "competitive advantage".
tdm17mn@reddit
Do they make 1440p 32” monitors? (OLED or Mini LED?
Admirable_Ad_92@reddit
No 32” OLEDs in 2k. Doesn’t exist. At 32” you need to go 4k for OLED
OLED exists in 1440p resolution for 27” and 34” ultrawide. Might exist In 5120x1440 too.
tdm17mn@reddit
Ah, I’m visually impaired anyway, so bigger is better for me. 4k is nice too. What would you recommend? I have a 7900xt gpu.
grapefruitsk@reddit
No clue about OLEDs. Too expensive for me, currently.
Don't see why there wouldn't be such a thing though. 1440p is in very high demand in every shape and size
Yebi@reddit
32" 1440p will look like ass

Acer Nitro 24" FHD 180hz 1ms Gaming Monitor
this is a pretty straight forward monitor and will give him up to 180 FPS which is what he'll want for games like Elden Ring or Minecraft, just put that in the search of Walmart or Best buy if you wanna buy it new, Target might even have it if your in the US

1440p 34 inch looks worse than 1080p 24 inch no thanks
eichkind@reddit
You cant compare ultrawide to 16:9 in that way. Pixel density for 1440p stays the same.
Max-Headroom-@reddit
It does not... What are you talking about. Pixel density certainly does not stay the same..
TRSTN_Music@reddit
1440p in 16:9 has the same pixel density as 1440p 21:9, otherwise the screen would be stretched.
CynderPC@reddit
you are aware that a 34 inch UW 1440p is the same physical height as a 27 right? A 34inch UW has 110ppi and a 27 has 109 (practically the same) not sure why you’d say it looks worse than a 24inch 1080p screen.

This is a good one

walmart has this one that i have and love. i use this as my main monitor in a 2 monitor setup. for the price this is really hard to beat honestly. it’s 32” 1440p for around $200. If you keep your eye out you should be able to find one for closer to $180 on sale. they go on sale pretty often https://www.walmart.com/ip/406688031?sid=21098c55-fc75-4c80-afeb-9ed524d8c998
iPhone_an_Pizza@reddit
Yep same one I have. Looks amazing compared to my old 32” 1080p monitor. I got mine for $206 out the door after tax. Sticker price was $188 when I bought it. Been playing the finals and have no issues out of the monitor and the graphics while gaming are top tier in my opinion for sub $200
x_sotto@reddit
Get any 1080p, 144hz minimum, IPS monitor
DisciplineSudden@reddit
Honestly any basic monitor that would do wonders for those game would be max 200 CAD, that's like 175 US maybe 180US but don't get anything third party from Amazon, they are defective in the dozens I'd say anything BenQ, Samsung, AOC, Sony if you look on FB marketplace you'll find a decent one, you'll want at least 144hz for him so he can play smoothly with no stutters, depending on his CPU and GPU
EveryNameEverMade@reddit
$200 Canadian is $144 US. You're not getting a 1440p 144hz monitor for $200 CAD either, unfortunately. You could get 1080p but who wants 1080p in today's day and age.
DisciplineSudden@reddit
I live in Canada myself and have gotten quite a few 1440p monitors at even over that, monitors are very affordable these days, if your buying a 1080p for that price your getting ripped off unfortunately
EveryNameEverMade@reddit
Idk I took a quick look at Canada computers and found only one that was minimum 1440p 144hz and it was $200 exactly and it was on sale for $70 off and has a 1 star rating, then you have to add tax and it comes out to well over $200. It's just not happening, unless you find some crazy rare sale price or something and if we are talking after taxes, there is nothing even close to the $200 mark. Of course 1080p is cheaper, I'm just stating you're not really going to find any monitors sub $200 that are at least 1440p 144hz
DisciplineSudden@reddit
The money also was a guesstimate, wasn't really trying to be exact but thanks for the correction 👍
bobacrackaddict@reddit
It’s a risk but it’s a fun one. Thrifting. I’ve gotten monitors that are MSRP for 300-400$ for only 20-35$ at Salvation Army / GoodWill type stores. You have to find the tag and search up the model, and will most likely have to buy the proper cables for it which is only about 5-10$ each.
Some people don’t appreciate thrifting for gifts so I would only go this route if you find a gnarly deal AND use the money saved to surprise him with maybe a game gift card? Or something he might like haha.
Otherwise folks in this thread already have given great recs.
sonido_lover@reddit
Dell G2724D anyone?
Haj5@reddit
From what i understand, the types of games you play, and how beefy if a PC they require has nothing to do with the monitor.
Max-Headroom-@reddit
You don't understand then
Haj5@reddit
Pls explain, im trying to learn
Max-Headroom-@reddit
Higher resolutions require more gpu power and less cpu, meaning at 4k res you can get away with a lower tier CPU because the load is on the GPU. At 1080p you would want a better cpu, to keep up with the amount of frames your card will render or else you'll get a bottleneck.

Am i the only one that always found it odd to ask for a gift on a birthday?
Latter_Humor6173@reddit (OP)
I understand that for sure- it can come off a certain way. But don’t worry I basically begged him to make me a list of things he wanted lmao. He’s not the type of person who expects gifts from people :,)

Depending on the size - look into the g series of Samsung monitors.
I rocked a 32" G5 for quite some time - still have it, just upgraded. I think it cost me $290 or something like that. Zero issues, curved, 165hz, 32". I enjoyed it quite a bit.
