I'm going to guess that 'o' and 'r' mean Openreach, ie telecoms duct under the pavement. There might be a blockage there they have to dig up so they can put some shiny new fibre optics through and give you faster internet.

Judging by the size and shape it might be dropping a small chamber onto an existing duct. Normally we mark blockages with an X in yellow or orange with an arrow of the direction you roses the blockage from.

Although looking at the image there might be more paint out of frame showing an arrow, in which case, yes, blockage.

Yeah I'm OR direct. Only a few cablers have cat and gennys so it's hard to be exact with the equipment we have. It's expected we put in as much detail as we can then the civils will pinpoint and dig down.

It'll be for a small maintenance dig, usually to expose a potentially damaged cable. If everything goes well then the hole could be dug and filled in the same day, but more than likely will need to be guarded and left overnight for the engineer to complete the work required the next day. If it's infront of your drive they should leave a boiler plate so you can still access it.

It could be a damaged existing cable, or probably more likely it is a collapsed duct. Where OR or a different provider utilising the duct space want to pull a new cable through.

It’ll be an Openreach mark, but possibly given how it’s marked up it’ll be for them to drop a new underground box as the blockages for repairs are usually much smaller markings.

If they’re putting a new box underground, then possibly your connection to ultra fast broadband is coming soon. Anywhere from a week to 3months after the works are done usually

Virgin media are digging up all over where I live in several different towns putting in fibre. They didn't warn us at all and the first I knew was a workie knocking my door at 8am saying if I wanted to use my car to take it out now because they were away to dig up the pavement at along the front of my house.

It’s called permitted development, telecoms company’s have been carrying out the fibre rollout across the U.K. for the last decade, incentivised by the government. Could you imagine how much slower it would be if everyone in the country had to be consulted, we’re already behind most of Europe and western countries, unsurprisingly.
