The fucking devs recommend you to have 32 gigs of ram to run the game. THIRTY-TWO. What kind of fucking optimization mess did they do to recommend THIRTY-TWO GIGS OF RAM?
AgentSkidMarks@reddit
No one optimizes their games anymore, which is weird since we're in the middle of a big push for all digital. You'd think now that people have to store the entire game's data on their device that devs would be more considerate of storage.
ThrowRAplutonium@reddit
I know hating on Nintendo is the cool thing to do right now, but they do a good job optimizing and compressing their games. The fact that Xenoblade X’s open world that’s bigger than BotW can fit in 12 GB (even less than it was when it came out on Wii U) is pretty impressive. TotK being 18 GB is pretty insane too with all the mechanical complexity on top of its huge world.
nyaasgem@reddit
Yes it's not hard to make a game with graphics straight from 2004 to be small and run well on modern hardware.
CamBaren@reddit
This is like the only comment I’ve come across in this thread so far that actually acknowledges the fact that, no, games aren’t optimized at all anymore. Devs really don’t spend the time, because they kinda don’t have to. It’s lazy.
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Past a certain point it's a waste of time though. I don't want them spending months to cut 10gb off a game. Multi-terabyte hard drives are dirt cheap. I want the devs to fix bugs and make new games.
Nuez_05@reddit
Who says they can't do both?
UnacceptableUse@reddit
Games are too complicated and the team sizes involved are already massive, past a certain point you're getting diminishing returns by putting more work into it.
xMobby@reddit

xMobby@reddit
yes... greed for money. tf kinda point is that lol
SalvationSycamore@reddit
At the same time? For little to no benefit to anyone with a modern computer?
ProfessorHund@reddit
I completely agree.
b1ackenergy@reddit
Have you ever tried to push your management to allow for some time to refactor or optimize stuff?
Companies are all about profit, indie devs are all about not starving to death before early access release and about not losing the whole audience when no new exciting stuff is released for a month after.
It’s always about economy :(
NullHypothesisCicada@reddit
Optimization isn’t about squeezing a 4k sweaty booba texture to 20kb, it’s about how it performs on your device so that your computer won’t crumple itself just by loading it.
If you’re gonna have tens of thousands of hi-res texture and polygons in your game, it’s gonna take up a lot of storage space, no matter what.
Space_Socialist@reddit
Nope there is absolutely tonnes of optimisations you just aren't aware of it. If you remade the Oblivion remaster with the techniques used in the original and none developed since the game would not run. Developers almost constantly optimise their games to the best of their ability but tight development cycles often mean it isn't done as much as it could be.
As for why games are so big nowadays it's because compressed files are really expensive to uncompress. You cannot do it at runtime without constant several second lag spikes. If done before runtime loading could take potentially 20-30 minutes to load which isn't acceptable. It also brings up the problem of the space is going to be taken up anyway. You cannot use compressed 3D models or compressed textures. So when you load up the game a huge amount of space is suddenly going to be taken up as the game has to uncompress the files. If you don't have enough space or there is a error during this process it can cause lots of bugs.
The_Shittiest_Meme@reddit
its part of a monopolization tactic by game companies to force you to choose what games you play. Large sizes means you have less games installed.
Secure-Stick-4679@reddit
When will dev studios learn that games that can only be played on the top 25% of computers will only have 25% of their expected playerbase

But online marketplaces typically include tax to just show final price to the customer, so i was wondering how it works for the US store.

CE0ofCringe@reddit
Yeah if you want to play modern games you usually use console unless you’re willing to invest in a more pricy gaming computer. Thats the whole point of a console, it’s a bit cheaper than a computer with the same performance
tukatu0@reddit
Achsually. No not at all. It just happened to be llike this because covid happened. They wanted money so they raised priced. There are no set rules.
Imagine sony increased the price of ps5s back in lockdowns by $50 every month. They probably would have gotten sued. But most importantly. They competed with xbox. If xbox was cheaper, xbox would have sold more.
There is no compeition in pc. So prices will keep going up until new ps6 comes out. Maybe the ps6 2 years from now competes with a current $3000 pc just because the pc makers said f you.

What kind of hardware are yall using cause I have a 1070 and an i7 7700 and it seemed to be running okay for me...
Gary_FucKing@reddit
What resolution and framerate?
marcushendersen@reddit
720 lol. I was getting over 60 so I capped it.
Gary_FucKing@reddit
Brother, no offense, but that is an insanely low bar to jump in with on other people's comments and go "don't know what y'all are complaining about, runs just fine for me guys!"
marcushendersen@reddit
If it runs on nearly 10 a year old hardware above low settings and framerate is steady then it isn't badly optimized.
Gary_FucKing@reddit
I guess you can make that argument, but would you say that if the resolution was 480p? 240p? Why is it only frame rate that gets a minimum standard when most pc gamers play at 1080p?
CE0ofCringe@reddit
Agreed, and even 1080 can be considered low at this point. (Posted by 1440p gang)(fuck 4K)
Gary_FucKing@reddit
Haha I have a 3440p but I getcha. 4k is too resource hoggy for the frames. I’ll stick with the ultrawide, just best balance of resolution and framerate (165hz, which is almost impossible to hit at high settings with my 6700xt 🥲).
SchwiftySouls@reddit
I'm running it at 60fps average on a 4core CPU and an RX580. I call cap on the other guy.
letsgoiowa@reddit
No you aren't out in the wild
A 3600 is getting dips to the 20s and 30's and it's faster lol
SchwiftySouls@reddit

And that top 25% actually buy games at retail instead of waiting for sales or pirating and pay for 80%+ of the net revenue to make a game. So publishers focus on them because that’s where they actually make money.
Jorsk3n@reddit
We shouldn’t have to wait on games any longer than we have to or accept lower quality because of you broke plebs out there. We’re living in 2025. Games from today shouldn’t be able to be played on your shitty ass pc from 2012…
JimboLimbo07@reddit
The "plebs" who buy the games are the ones that give them money my man. And it's not like modern games look that much better than older games
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Some should be. There's no reason a pixel roguelike shouldn't. But yeah, it shouldn't be surprising if the high resolution open world RPG doesn't run at 8k, 120fps in the middle of a city full of NPCs.
Also, some people don't know what "playable" means. I still have yet to find a game that literally doesn't run on low settings with my 1070 which is almost 10 years old now.
Aleks_1995@reddit
You don’t need to play on super ultra graphics. Hell I still rock a 4790k and a 5700xt and most games until maybe 1 or 2 years ago I was able to play somewhat decently at least. I only had issues with Hogwarts legacy and ue5 games but that was it

SchwiftySouls@reddit
I have a really shitty rig. Like running a 4core CPU and an RX580. The game tries to tell me I can't run it, but I can. Everything set to Medium and I average 60fps. You don't need a top 25% PC to play this lol
Adipay@reddit
Unreal Engine 5 is a bitch in terms of optimization yeah but is game's getting larger so much of a surprise?
Average size of games in 1996: 10 - 50mb
Average size of games in 2006 (when Oblivion came out): 3 - 8gb so like 160 times larger than games 10 years ago.
Average size of games in 2016: 40 - 60gb which is like 7 times larger than games 10 years ago.
Average size of games in 2025: 80 - 150gb which is about twice as much as games 10 years ago.
Games will continue to get larger. This is not a surprise.
KnightofPandemonium@reddit
It's not a surprise, but it's still dumb.
EltonJohnSlingsDick@reddit
as technology progresses, the market for realistic looking games with large maps that need to be loaded at multiple points becomes larger and so will the file sizes. its a pretty simple concept to grasp
KnightofPandemonium@reddit
Yeah. It's not surprising, but it is dumb.
Like, why do we need the maps to look so realistic, and why do we need them to be so big? Some open world games demand it, but it seems like the massively increased storage space available on most computers these days has given a lot of companies a greenlight to stop caring about keeping their file sizes manageable.
EltonJohnSlingsDick@reddit
because scale and realism are both cool concepts to explore, its just sad that they require a lot of processing power to do. games can stay like OG Oblivion and DS1; small and serviceable, but the ideas that can be explored with a larger map or higher level of detail necessitate the bloating
nyaasgem@reddit
The only game (that I can think of right now) where I ever enjoyed the absurdly big map was Ghost Recon Wildlands.
But only because the landscape looked that good it was varied enough that even just driving around for 20 minutes was enjoyable.
Fenrir-The-Wolf@reddit
World space really doesn't have much to do with it, it's mostly just textures.
Look at Fallout 4, about 40GB, add on the high res texture pack and you're doubling that.
DeliriumRostelo@reddit
But the ideas aren't being explored and never will be
Deus ex and thief 2 had more advanced and flexible mechanics than like 99% of these bloated games while being tiny in file size
I think that a part of this is market assumpti9ns that games have to be looking so good
KnightofPandemonium@reddit
I feel like Starfield is a pretty reasonable counterpoint here. The official download size is 125 gigabytes, and each planet apparently has a massive area to explore and look at, and detailed graphics, and all that, and they really don't do much with it- it's just tons and tons of empty space.
Like, what concept is actually being explored in that space? It's just empty.
GTAV seemed to do some good with having a massive area to run around in, but even in that space, you could compare it to Yakuza, which has a really small map that they did a ton of stuff with.
I don't think the larger maps are a good idea, not because they take up a lot of space, but because they just don't do much with that space. Restriction breeds innovation.
poprostumort@reddit
Because they make games better. Exploring a world is superior to walking through smaller maps that connect to each other. Realistic look suits most games more than a stylized one. Technology is advancing and those can be used by anyone.
The problem is not that it's making games worse - problem is that it makes shitty games better. Most of new AAA games are shitty, but implementation of those pushes them into mediocrity and allows studios to somehow survive when they can't make good games.
mega_douche1@reddit
Why is it dumb? Storage space is dirt cheap so why not utilize it?
hagamablabla@reddit
God forbid I want to use my storage space on more than 2 games at once
Bandwidth doesn't go up at the same rate as storage. In the time I went from 250 GB of storage to 4TB, my bandwidth has gone from 20 Mbps to 50 Mbps.
SchwiftySouls@reddit
I picked up a 4TB external for $40USD. I have 56 games installed on it with 2.1TB left. I have Oblivion Remastered, Modded Skyrim, CP2077, ARK Ascended, and many more.
You can definitely switch between more than 2 games without having to uninstall anything. You've just gotta be willing g ro drop a little money on it- something you have to do to game, regardless.
hagamablabla@reddit
How about I get to do that without spending any money because companies stop bloating their games?
SchwiftySouls@reddit
Not an option, currently, so either deal with not having space and shut up about it, or get more storage. Those are your options. Storage is dirt cheap.
hagamablabla@reddit
Nah, I'm not going to lower expectations just because AAA companies can't be assed to care about optimization.
Adipay@reddit
You'd pay 50 - 70 dollars for a AAA game but not 40 dollars for some storage?
SchwiftySouls@reddit
fair enough. I respect you standing firm.
Fembussy42069@reddit
Bro wants the cake and not pay for it. There are many indie games you can play. If you complain about 100GB+ Games those are AAA games that are trying to push the boundaries of what's possible. You need a good computer for AAA games and that's never going to change cause that's the whole point on AAA games.
Stuka_Ju87@reddit
From where? I just spent 150$ for a 2TB.
SchwiftySouls@reddit
walmart lol it's not an SSD or anything, so it's a bit slow to verify, but that's a non-issue for me
mega_douche1@reddit

KnightofPandemonium@reddit
It's cheap, but it's not infinite, and I don't want to have to uninstall old games that take up too much space every time I want to play a new game which also takes up too much space.
mega_douche1@reddit
That's always been the case though. Happened on my ps1 memorycard
KnightofPandemonium@reddit

Acharyn@reddit
It's not dumb at all. It's just not what you want.
Bigger games take up more space, that's just how it is. You're not installing pong or frogger.
KnightofPandemonium@reddit
Man, I'm just saying that file sizes are getting out of control and we'd benefit from trying to get it back under control again. A 4 gigabyte game got thirty times as large as it was on release. Doesn't that seem like it's a bit much, even considering the space graphics take up and whatnot? Shouldn't we care about manageable filesizes, even if it's only because smaller files are faster to load and transfer and stuff?
Acharyn@reddit
They're not thoughy, they're increasing relative to storage space.
A remaster of a 4 GB game. They added HD textures and probably updated mesh density. HD textures take up a lot more space, compression can only do so much.
A 1 TB drive is considered small thest days, 100GB is 0.1 times that and 0.05 times a 2 TB drive. It's manageable for the audience they're releasing for.
This is one of the least important concernes for performance. Everyone has SSDs and DDR4 or 5 RAM. Optimising the function calls in the main loop and what get's loaded into RAM and when is much more important.
SchwiftySouls@reddit
I agree with everything, but your numbers are wrong. 1TB = ~1000GB, making 100GB 10%, not 0.1%.
Lance141103@reddit
That’s why they said 0.1 times instead of 0.1% (unless they edited their comment)
SchwiftySouls@reddit
Imma keep it a buck, I swear I saw %, but I'm also a dumbass so I could've hallucinated it.
SalvationSycamore@reddit
And the graphics got like 100x better. I don't see the issue. Of course 4k textures take up space. We should be cheering that they are doing both good gameplay and good appearance rather than sacrificing one for the other. Now we just need more original games that play good and look good.

Jesus Christ just focus on gameplay and fun. Not every release needs to be a mammoth undertaking. Major studios could make amazing small fun games like Balatro, Rocket Leauge, and Undertale.
They don't because corporatism kills ingenuity and creativity. They probably couldn't make games like that if they tried.
SadderestCat@reddit
It is not needed however. A lot of file size expansion in newer games feels like bloat. Take the newer call of duties for example. They take place on very small maps and don’t have the most cutting edge graphics yet absolutely consume drive space for no good reason.
SalvationSycamore@reddit
For some games yeah, like somebody should probably make the effort to bring down the full Ark size from 400gb because that's absurd. And I'm sure almost every game could be shrunk at least a little if you spent years of dev time tweaking it. But that's a huge waste of time and money for very little tangible benefit for most games. I'd rather just buy a second SSD for dirt cheap and let the devs work on bugs and sequels.
Inuakurei@reddit
What else are you using that 2tb SSD for?
SalvationSycamore@reddit
This is a 4chan sub, you already know what's on that hard drive
rividz@reddit
qq, I have a pornstar I like that I have a dedicated folder for. But I also have a BDSM folder. I create shortcuts to the file in the other folder when this happens but it this best practice?
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Just set the porn star as your background picture and minimize the BDSM images right at the moment of climax so you can look into his/her eyes. Problem solved.
SalvationSycamore@reddit
Is it? I mean most games have way more detail now. You could easily go back to small games if you dumped all the nice high resolution textures. But nobody wants that for games like big open world RPGs and simulators. I'm not a computer guy but I'm pretty sure compression has limits. It's way easier to just buy a second hard drive than to try and break physics to squeeze 1000x the data into the same space.
Jackm941@reddit
Computing power and storage is also much cheaper now, you can also uninstall and install things much faster. Avg speed round me is like 600Mbps. I don't get what people's problem is except "my 10 yo pc isn't cutting edge anymore"

living in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and getting 50Mbps through a copper cable is the problem

This is is a bit reductive I believe. I'm talking out of school slightly here but there's not many incentives for the development paradigm to optimize for optimization unfortunately, which leave a lot of room for "stupid and inefficient but it works" type of code.

Will they though? I don't think we are doing 8k so how can they can get bigger?
CE0ofCringe@reddit
Most new games size can be attributed to the ungodly amount of high resolution textures. I’ve been saying that game stores should allow you to install high or low resolution versions of the textures.
Cyhawk@reddit
More textures, but also they aren't compressing textures like they use to in the past. Oblivion Remastered is an example of this, theres no compression just raw texture files.
CE0ofCringe@reddit
Crazy thing about games now is that most of the storage is just unnecessarily high texture size 😭. They should make it standard to be able to download different texture size versions of the game.

TheRealSaphier@reddit
This is what gets me. I have a few friends that say “whoa, 100 gigs! I’ll have to uninstall some stuff!” And they still have a 1 tb hard drive. People are not catching on to the increasing size needed for games and refuse to upgrade their storage to match. I’m not sure if it’s nostalgia for the “good ol days” or inability to get with the times (like a mix of both?)
Scorkami@reddit
i think the issue isnt that games just got larger but that it does not feel like the size is deserved.
morrowind remake is over 100gb right? afaik, witcher 3 was like 80 with all the dlc. and both games have a ton of content to chew through. assassins creed valhalla is what, 70gb? it has multiple open world areas with dozens of content inside.
if i carve out 200gb for a game in 10 years, i want a justification why that game is so large. if its just games getting more complex, then there is a limit to the complexity that we need (no one gives a fuck about shrinking horseballs in red dead 2. that was literally wasted money) and if games are getting bigger due to the game having, as todd says it, "sixteen times the size" with more content, then it needs to actually have more content and bang for my buck, or in this case, space, than smaller games.
i feel like games got larger in file size without actually adding anything the player cares about. sure better graphics and all that are nice but its a flattening curve and we are at a point where its reaching a plateau. by that point, i dont want another increase in file size if im not getting for more it
Aniquin@reddit
Comparing a graphical remaster of an old game to entirely new games doesn't make sense. Of course new games got much larger because they added more content and larger maps but that's not what happened here. The Oblivion remaster is the same as the original just with updated graphics so it shouldn't be this large.
GuyNamedWhatever@reddit
I just don’t like how it can become a storage issue. If I want to play like 8 AAA games take up an entire SSD
LoneRubber@reddit
And to top it off, high capacity M.2 SSDs are getting cheaper. People love to complain about the storage issue and I always explain what you said. The only game it doesn't make sense is Warzone. A competitive battle royale where you'd think they'd optimize mesh utilization to make for an easier to run and access game where the playing field is full of all sorts of different hardware typically ranging from 6th gen Intel to 9800X3Ds and R9 280s to 5090s.
OuweDorper@reddit
And now instead of using the raw numbers, list the percentage of disc space that was used to install these games. I did not do the math, but I assume they depict a way better comparison.
Commaser@reddit
Solution: Play pixelated indie games instead
Inuakurei@reddit
This conveniently ignores that the average storage size is 400x larger than back then. And faster.
Imagine_TryingYT@reddit
Fr fr. People act like optimization is this magic thing that can compress a 2 TB game into a 50MB one if they just tried hard enough. Same thing when a game can't run on their decade old PC at Ultra High 200 fps because "optimization".
CarlosFlare@reddit
The difference is that yes, it can be done if they try hard enough. For example, Starfield has no reason to be double the size of Elden Ring.
Stolen_Sky@reddit
It can be done, but it's expensive and time consuming.
Nintendo optimise their games really well, but they're now charging $80 a pop.
ProfessorHund@reddit
Almost all the computational load is rendering so having cumbersome builds that precedes rendering because devs dont care about efficiency will definitely not help.

They are a lot faster but storage wise not really. Around 2006 most peoples hard drives were 150-250GB.... Nowadays? 1-2 TB because anything bigger costs a mint if its an SSD, or is a spin drive too slow for modern open world gaming.
With the better quality assets and audio files games should be many times bigger on average now than in 2006; but Oblivion Remastered could probably get down to 80gb by having it's textures compressed better.
I am not scandalised though, thank god it's not like Doom 2016 at least. That was mere a 60gb game, but had its data all packed into one big bin file you had to redownload the entirety of to update.

PussyDeconstructor@reddit
This is anything but hyper realistic.
They upscaled all of their assets, nothing worth 120gb.

Yep that's why back into the day everyone was calling the NPCs uncaccy valley. Because for the time they were super good and the game looked great. That's why modern computers struggle so much. Every. Single. Fucking. Thing. Has to have unique meshes. The original Mario bros, they saved by having the clouds and bushes literally be recolors.
Meanwhile, the strands on each pair of shoes in gta5 all have their own unique everything.

Games should be able to run on shitty computers from a decade ago with improved graphics as options.
Most of the processing power being required by graphics instead of gameplay mechanics is fucking stupid
77enc@reddit
love it when i download a modern game and it somehow simultaneously looks worse but takes like ten times the processing power to run compared to the shit i played like 10 years ago.
truly no amount of hardware innovation can keep up with games studios' unwillingness to put the slightest amount of effort into things running well.

It the difference between style and realism.
Star Wars battlefront 1 (the ea remake) looked great when it released and still looks nice, but not as good as it did.
Meanwhile, something like hi-fi rush, with a distinctive style, will look just as good 20 years down the line.
nyaasgem@reddit
Death Stranding is realistic but still ran like a dream on my GTX 1060. And visually it still shits on most of today's AAAA releases.
Msprg@reddit
Holy hell Hi-Fi Rush mentioned!
Really tho, art style vs realism is part of it. The second part of it, in the case of Hi-Fi Rush at least, is that it wasn't made to be a money cow. It was a passion project, game development wasn't rushed. (or well as rushed as it often is) The game came out looking great, ready to be played back-to-back start to finish without any major bugs. And without micro transactions. Almost unheard of in the recent years. Give it a try :)

GiverOfTheKarma@reddit
Which games do you mean?
77enc@reddit
honestly take your pick, a lot of games from the last year or two with "realistic" graphics just have that same blown out flat raytracing tech demo look with zero thought or effort put into actual style and for all that they run like shit.
to give a concrete example with racing games since they tend to look great as far as realistic graphics go; look at TDU solar crown that came out last year and then look at need for speed rivals which came out in 2013. solar crown, especially in daytime looks horrendous and flat and it runs like shit (reflections are nice thats about it). and then rivals on the other hand looks like a movie and you can run the thing on a toaster.
theres a few games that do actually look good enough to somewhat justify how much more intensive they are to run than the stuff we had 10 years ago but honestly theyre pretty few and far between.
Jibjumper@reddit
Fuck your shitty computer. Why should we hold back for outdated tech?
Nathan_hale53@reddit
I don't mind ok/outdated graphics if a game is good and the art design is too, but i really enjoy good graphics. Oblivion remaster takes some space, but so?? Its insanely immersive.
I honestly don't know what gameplay factor could require a lot of Processing power. Environmental physics and crowd density are like the two things I can think of that will affect gameplay and require processing power.
DarkScorpion48@reddit

For real though. Why can’t my Nintendo nes run a modern game? Wah. We went from dealing in kb to tb or bigger files in the span of 40 years. More people have access to gaming than ever and modern games contain so much more data it’s laughable.
Sure studios could optimize things better. But the reality is the biggest memory suck in modern games are audio files and those can’t be optimized like the rest the game, so even with optimizations you’re saving 5-20gbs at most on a 100gb+ game.
J_T_L_@reddit
In 30fps with graphics that on a pc level would be low-mid settings
JakeVonFurth@reddit
You say that like the average consumer is running a 4090.
J_T_L_@reddit
No? I am saying that as a fact. A ps4's graphics are on the level of a low end pc, low-mid at most. Even when the ps4 was new, it was nowhere near the power pcs could have.
The average consumer doesn't need to have a 4090 for the existence of high-end parts to make the ps4 low-end.
And hell, my computer would probably sell for at most 200-300, and it's way better than a ps4 in any game
Pkrhett@reddit
you're not wrong, i had 0 technical issues playing on an OG ps4 when the game came out.
BUT the ps4 was screaming in pain even if you cleaned it and had new thermals it was pushed to its limits.
Muscle_Bitch@reddit
Good studios know how to push a system to its limits.
And it's a legacy that ensures.
Naughty Dog pushed the PlayStation to near breaking point to get Crash Bandicoot working. Rockstar North pulled out all the stops to make San Andreas the marvel that it was.
And these two studios are still at the head of the pack when it comes to producing technical, graphical and gameplay masterpieces today.
Pkrhett@reddit
very true. both those studios take time until the game is done cooking. dog/rockstar will wait YEARS for that release until the games are perfected and it really goes a long ways.
funny enough both studios keep releasing graphical updates/versions for the same games like its RE4 or skyrim :D
Bobly2@reddit
At 30 fps on low-mid graphical settings with frame drops in areas like lemoynes swamps and leaving and entering a house, there is 0 reason why they can’t get 60 fps with half decent graphics if you compare it to other rockstar games. IMO gta4 still looks really good, and runs pretty damn good on a ps4. I’d take better optimization over hyper realistic graphics and features any day.

DemiVideos04@reddit
I don't think its just the companies profiting by reducing development time by skipping optimization. I think its also that the a lot of the new generation of game developers are self taught through youtube and whatnot, which usually never really touch on the fundamentals of optimization. There's some surface level stuff, dependent on the program used, like how to use optimization tools that the software itself provides, but optimization isnt a tool or a method or a technique or even a workflow, its a complete and isolated philosophy in game development. And that is something that has been lost to time. When people had to worry about the usage of mere Bytes, optimization wasn't just something you did, it was something you considered and which influenced the entire process before you wrote even the first character of code.
SimpanLimpan1337@reddit
Also saw a philosophy that if a game takes up someones entire disk drive they wont be able to play any other games spontaneously, as to make space for the other game they would first need to un install your game and then install theirs which could take hours if both have 100gb file sizes.
Thus they will end up stuck playing just their game, until you actually uninstall and never touch it again. But with some luck this is at the same time they release the "next version" of that same game.
DemiVideos04@reddit
Sorry, but this is a very ridiculous theory considering storage today is the cheapest it has ever been. You can get a new 1TB HDD 7200RPM at 25Eur. You can get a new 1tb NVME for 60, 10eur or even free used.
This would be completely ineffective as a method to increase player retention.
skyturnedred@reddit

SimpanLimpan1337@reddit
Yeah, I agree. Yet still I know atleast a handful of dudes who always kee juggling whatever games they have installed, and whenever something like Warzone or another one of those clones is the "current thing" thats all they play and when I suggest something else they bitch at how theyre out of space.
DomSchraa@reddit
Youre partially right
Bigger studios often have devs on limited time contracts - which means you work for them for a couple months, then leave again
Thats the reason behind many AAA failures recently, the team that finishes the product is completely different to the team that started it
Why? This way they pay devs less benefits
EvaUnit_03@reddit
The garten of banban is a case of this. It practically melts your computer because the modeling is so needlessly complex for such ugly characters. The scary part isn't the game, it's that the series takes years off your GPU.
RipDove@reddit
Meshes don't increase the file size that much. It's textures.
Are you trolling or stupid? Literally everything you just listed would barely increase file size. Everyone who up voted you also are big morons since they also don't realize everything you just listed would be in the sticker digit to double digit megabytes in terms of size.

Realistic Life-Like textured morons
Nathan_hale53@reddit
To be fair, meshes require textures. It kind of goes hand in hand. But yeah, textures and audio take up the most space in games.
TommasoDiDio@reddit
I was about to say this. How exactly would a “recolor” reduce file size if it still requires two different textures and two meshes. Also the horse ball example is just an animation, has nothing to do with file size.
M4xW3113@reddit
Cause the recolor is not another texture nor another mesh, it's the same sprite just recolored at run time
TommasoDiDio@reddit
Okay true, I was thinking of the 3D games but they meant the one that wasn’t even using meshes just sprites
Xalyia-@reddit
I mean you can absolutely use a single white diffuse texture with a color parameter to handle recolors in a 3D game. It’s the same principle. A lot of games do color swaps this way.
TommasoDiDio@reddit
Yes, but I think the original comment is talking about optimizations that could be applied to games like Oblivion, and in a realistic game like that two completely different objects would usually require different textures.
Xalyia-@reddit
We’re talking about a “recolor” which, by definition uses the same base asset. Of course you wouldn’t use it for something like clouds vs bushes in a modern game, SMB was doing that out of necessity. But recolored assets for similar objects even in realistic games can absolutely save disk space. Think flag banners, armor accent colors, shield decals etc.
TommasoDiDio@reddit
Yes, recoloring works when geometry is similar, but that’s a niche optimization. The original comment was about Oblivion, where most assets don’t share geometry. The vast majority of assets require new textures to fit their UV mapping and look realistic. That’s why file sizes balloon in modern remakes when the new geometry becomes much more complex. You’re right in theory, but it’s barely applicable in practice for a game like this.
Xalyia-@reddit
I think we’re talking past each other here. I wasn’t trying to claim that recolors would have a significant file size reduction in modern oblivion. I was asserting their use in 3D games to counter your point, which was that the idea of recolors are “irrelevant to 3D games”.
M4xW3113@reddit
Yes.

Drakkon2ZShadows@reddit
Hijacking Top Comment to say this:
This cannot be a sustainable model. It just isnt. A game being too big and too demanding means that only a smaller percentile of people can afford to buy, install, and run it.
Compare how many buy and actually play a popular low-graphics indie game vs a popular AAA game (e.g Lethal Company and COD) and youll see the only thing propping up the AAA industry anymore is sheer habit and imagined social pressure. Because there will always be people who dont care if a game is even 100 bucks if they've been buying it for the last 14 years to play with their also-rich friends and still afford to eat. To companies its just if less people buy they can price it higher to keep up profits.
Calling it now, at best for AAA it'll be a divergence where there will be games made and priced exclusively for the rich and games for the rest of us who cant afford to buy the latest tech every year so we can play a game with every blade of grass visible in 8k.
Imagine EA making 400GB FIFA 34 at $120 for the rich/really dedicated fans and still making a profit.
Thing is, this could be good for us, the consumer, if the market splits into two then the inflation will detach as the idea of higher prices+requirements would become more exclusive to this higher class. Companies would have to consider when making a game if they want to make something super premium for the few or something super accessible for the many.

They only did that for the original mario because they absolutely had to to fit on the cartridge. I don't think they would have if it wasn't needed because no one likes optimizing, its really complex (not in a fun challenging way most of the time), can introduce a lot of strange hard to solve/detect bugs and so is a lot of work so it costs a lot. People only like the result.

Yet another thread full of people who have no idea how game development works. There's a limit to how much stuff can be compressed, and a limit to when it's even feasible to use compressed assets. You can't magically turn hundreds of gigabytes into almost nothing, no matter how good you are at "optimization". If a game came out today that was only 1GB in size but all the textures were super low res people would instead shit on that. There's no winning.

Chappiechap@reddit
My main issue with game size bloat is you have games that take up 150 gigs of space that look terrible and run awful and games that take up 60 that have more graphical fidelity and run buttery smooth.
The latter proves you don't need to throw in so much fucking bloat that drags the performance down, yet the bandaid fix is throwing on framegen and calling it a day.

Personally, I wanted more horse armor.
Idk. It keeps a lot of the same design philosophies as the original. Still the weird zoom in to npcs when talking to them, weird voice acting - these are all things people liked so that's fine if that's what they were going for. But take the Brilliant Pearl and Shiny Diamond example. Gamefreak wanted that to be super faithful so it ended up neglecting advancements of the modern entries.
Personally if Oblivion remake was bold enough to reimagine how the game would function in modern day now that there's less restrictions, I'd like that more. But if its mostly just the same, I could just play the original again. At least then I can add mods.

Yeah, obviously. But not everyone plays in 4k, and 4k textures are HUGE. Really don't see why making them optional is such a bad thing. It's one of the only things I'll give Ubisoft credit for. Why do I have to download something huge that I'm never going to use?
airfryerfuntime@reddit
Play the old one, then.
UnchartedCHARTz@reddit
Haven't played it yet, but from what I've seen the game does literally look 30x better soo...
malagic99@reddit
4chan is back… 4CHAN IS BACK
jUG0504@reddit
say what you want about No More Room In Hell 2, but at least thats a UE 5 game thats somehow under 20 gigabytes in size
CodasWanderer@reddit
Its almost like unreal engine 5 is on the cutting edge of graphics technology...
fast_t0aster@reddit
Compression costs a company money, and it's become the standard
PurplurPuzzlehead111@reddit
Wait genuine question here, are people generally disappointed by the remaster?
in_elation@reddit
No it’s been mostly positively received
ScientificAnarchist@reddit
People shit on Nintendo so much which is fair but they keep their shit tight
DJIsSuperCool@reddit
But it means the game winds up looking like shit. Example: pokemon
CinderBirb@reddit
Gamers when game looks like shit: angry
Gamers when game looks great but has large filesize: angry
DJIsSuperCool@reddit
Personally, this doesn't affect me. I have a 2TB SSD and a 2TB HDD. And I'm happy to uninstall games I dont play anymore.
CinderBirb@reddit
Meaning you're one of the intelligent ones
Existing-Help-3187@reddit
Easy to keep the shit tight when textures are 144p with shit audio.
ScientificAnarchist@reddit
We have no idea on the new console but that hasn’t been my experience even with switch
JimboLimbo07@reddit
120 gb is probably enough for a 12 hour 4k porn compilation of the mom of every person who's worked on that game
Ranch069@reddit
Any game over 70GB is an instant boycott for me. I will never support anti-consumer bullshit.
_Volatile_@reddit
Yes, optimization is a lost art. "Just get a bigger drive, loser"
Higher fidelity models and textures just take up more space by definition. Just how it is.
Pullsberry_Dough_Boy@reddit
That's one of the reasons why I'm not getting the game just yet. I do have the space to spare, but not the fortitude of mind to endure it.
Atlaspooped@reddit
Apparently CDPR was able to get Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty onto a 64gb Switch 2 cart so apparently the art hasn’t been totally lost
Dramatic_Science_681@reddit
i believe the conspiracy that games are left poorly optimised to take up as much space as possible so you cant have as many games installed, reducing your options for other games and thus increasing engagement
Steakdabait@reddit
Honestly 120 gb is pretty tame for western game devs. Glad they showed restraint
BirbsAreSoCute@reddit
?
UwUthanizeMePlss@reddit
Because back then an xbox come with a 20gb hard drive and 512mb ram and now most machines have more ram than 20gb and a shit ton more drive space
BearlyWizard@reddit
It's annoying that it uses so much storage, but it's fucking aggravating when it runs like shit too
Purp1eS0ck@reddit
It seriously makes me crazy. The dev company I work for puts so much money and time into making the game look hyper realistic so that it can... be the same uncanny hyper realistic style as every other AAA title coming out? I understand that it's become industry standard to have your game look like this but with the most popular indies currently and the presentation of some of the best selling games OAT like Minecraft and Terraria it bewilders me that these companies can't realise that if you already have a following and an interested audience, you just have to make a decent fucking game. It doesn't need to look realistic whatsoever.
(not to say the oblivion remaster wasn't a good decision business wise, it already had memes around it, they marketed it and it went somewhat viral and now streamers and influencers are involved enough that general consumers are dropping $50 on a 20 year old game... it worked)
BBtheboy@reddit (OP)
Not every game needs to look like a pixel art indie game, vareity is the spice of life.
Saying every game that has a realistic style looks the same is kinda dumb, plenty of AAA games do that and still have a unique art direction.
Purp1eS0ck@reddit
Realism isn't a style. I'm not saying everything that goes for realism looks the same. I'm saying that the emphasis on high quality graphics that many AAA games seem to prioritise nowadays is exhausting. Yes as you say there are companies that want hyper realism for something that has unique art direction but you're putting words in my mouth with "pixel art indie game"
I don't want everything to be a pixel art low poly ps1 graphic nostalgia trip. All I'm saying is that the industry would be much better off if big budget titles put a bit more manpower into the actual quality of their game in terms of mechanics and gameplay loop as opposed to characters having environment adaptive skin pores and realtime reflective eyeballs.
BeenEatinBeans@reddit
This is what I really hate about triple A games now. Everything has to so heavily over-optimised, and take up so much space in your storage, that if you don't have a high-end setuo you can just go fuck yourself. Don't even think about trying to buy a hard drive either, because a lot of modern games will jist straight-up refuse to even run if you don't install them on internal storage
airfryerfuntime@reddit
Are you trying to install games on an external hard drive? Lol what?
theyeshman@reddit
Hard drives are typically internal storage, they're not hard to install and format. Do you mean games that require you install them on SSDs, or are you trying to install games on like a USB hard drive? If you need an SSD for games you're trying to install, a 1tb SSD is like 50 bucks, and if you just need any internal storage a 1tb HDD is 25.
beansahol@reddit
High res textures.
Felix8XD@reddit
Huh?!?!??? How can a made from scratch hyperrealistic remake game released for the most powerful technical devices we currently have be bigger in file size than a game from two decades ago?!?!?!?
Laxhoop2525@reddit
If it’s made from scratch, why does it have many of the same bugs the original had?
Daurinnn@reddit
It's not made from scratch. Remaster use ue5 as a graphic engine not as a game engine. Game still use old game engine and old code but visuals from ue5.
Gogr_eu@reddit
Sounds more like a mod, not like a remaster.
Felix8XD@reddit
ok maybe not entirely made from scratch but almost everything is completely newly made
Laufreyja@reddit
textures and uncompressed audio files are the main reason. Also language files if it's voice acted. taking that all out of Doom 2016 changes it from like 70 gb to 20
J0hnBoB0n@reddit
I wonder if the massive storage capacity of modern hard drives discourages devs from being thrifty with storage space. Because devs that need to be storage friendly are pulling off some funky magic, like Tears of the Kingdom is less than 20 GB. What are they doing with this one, texturing their rocks with 100 megapixel photographs?
Sergeant_Swiss24@reddit
My computer got 16 gigs of ram, and the game recommended 32. I play it anyways and it runs like a charm lol idk what Bethesda is smoking
Laxhoop2525@reddit
Wait… Is 4chan not kill? This would have been posted after the attack.
theyeshman@reddit
It's back up, yes
News publications saying it was down forever were clickbaiting, the site's survived worse before.
SwampiiTV@reddit
I've been saying this, but I feel like after around 2014 we haven't needed to progress much technologically for the average consumer, get a ThinkPad from around then and it will most likely be able to do what you need for a laptop, the gtx 1080ti still kicks ass in most games and the Xbox 1 and ps4 graphics while being a compromise still are decent if all you want is 1080p. Maybe I'm just a 4k display hater tho.
zombieGenm_0x68@reddit
it just works
FireMaker125@reddit
Why are people shocked by this? Gasp! A new game is bigger than an old one? A complete mystery! It’s not as if this has literally been the case forever because as graphics and games evolve the storage requirements increase
PolypsychicRadMan@reddit
I think modern vg graphics are a psyop to sell overpriced high end gpus and nothing else
Unknown_User_66@reddit
Why didn't you guys tell me 4Chan was back?!?!
GetCanc3rRedditAdmin@reddit
There are so many small details that hardly anyone could give a fuck about or even notice during normal gameplay. We’re here to play the game not watch a horse testicle shrink (looking at you RDR2).
Picone-_-@reddit
Yeah, I don't understand the hype. I prefer the original.
idontuseredditsoplea@reddit
It's mostly sound effects y'know
An8thOfFeanor@reddit
Anons coke-bottle glasses and padded helmet keep him from experiencing 4k textures
