How to make the head/bathroom more kid friendly

I have a 12 year old who hates sleeping on the boat due to the bathroom situation. Has anyone upgraded or improved it to make it more comfortable for them? Looking for ideas

The biggest confusion is the whole how much water to flush and then how much to rinse thing on most boats under 50’. (Even most modern ones). It can be intimidating for an adult (let alone a kid) if it’s not explained properly. The mysterious hand pump ones are worst of all if you don’t understand what’s going on under the deck.

I have always flushed tp and not the thin kind. Charmin Ultra. Never had a problem. I do regular maintenance(vinegar or acid flush, occasionally flushing holding tank, etc) I use plenty of fresh water to flush. This third boat. Are people really having issues or it’s just what people have passed down without really seeing it happen? Smell is usually vent issue, old hoses or salt water flush.

She hates the smell the lack of privacy/ no paper in the toilet.

she might be at a particular phase & might get over over it. or maybe not.
there's not a lot you can do. my daughter loves being on the boat, despite the heads having no door at all & the hand pump being a little dodgy. my nieces too. others absolutely hate it...

A composting head would address the smell, and allows for toilet paper in the toilet.

need more details, what kind of boat? what kind of toilet?
Smell: what chemicals are you using?
chemicals: I have a dometic portable (976) and I use TST which you can get at walmart. it gets emptied and more TST put in about weekly. I also keep a sanitizing/de-odorizing spray for after each use.
maintenance: Every 90 days, ill empty it,then fill it with a mix of water and white vinegar, let it soak for some hours, or ideally overnight. Then bring it to the bath house for a piping hot rinse. This loosens scale that comes off in big chips and flakes. I dump that in the bath house toilet and flush. Removing the scale periodically can help.
air filter: i got a HEPA air filter, which stays on 100% of the time, next to the portable. Filter is changed every 90 days.
air freshener pods. For good measure, buy a couple of those egg shape things that you twist open and it has a gel core inside that slowly releases a scent. Place them strategically.
good venitation. A porthole that opens, or a dorade or something can go a long way. Smells have to go somewhere to be removed, ideally outdoors. Having a fan to help blow out the odor is a big help, and is very effective.
Lack of privacy:
A previous owner of my Pearson 26 removed the stock bulkheads, and added in new custom ones, which had huge horizontal arches cut into it, which sucked (no privacy) i just bought some cheap corrugated plastic (the stuff political signs and the like are made of) and cut it to overlap and tension fit, making a more solid temporary bulkhead. Ill make a more permanent version later out of a shower wall kit.
On my boat, the v-berth, head, saloon are all kind of connected. The head is kind of in its own cubby, but theres no door. I did hang a nice tapestry/curtain where the original door was, so my head is now reasonably private. Its still open to the vberth, but that had sliding wood doors, which ill add back eventually.
This is simple, just bring toilet roll on board. If there is a shower in the head, you can buy a waterproof cover/holder. get a small bathroom trash bin from a dollar store, ideally one with a closing/sealing lid, put a sign that says this is where paper and other products go, and only human waste gets flushed.
This wasnt mentioned, but ill add it anyways...
Imo, a good solution is get the wall mounted hand sanitizer dispensers like you see in offices, hospitals, gas stations, etc. These are easy to refill and take up less space. However, i would ALSO make sure there is a sink, running water, and bar soap, and paper or cloth towels for hand drying.
Extra Credit:
If you really want to show you made an effort, add some other basic amenities if they are missing.
mirror. Girls like to check their hair or makeup.
a good light (they need to see themselves clearly in the mirror)
120v service. This could be an inverter wired to the 12v system, or a powerstation that has household outlets on it. if they are going to overnight especially, they may want to be able to use a curling iron or blow dryer, or whatever other bathroom gadgets. I prefer the power station, because then these gadgets cant suck the capacity out of the house to a point navigation instruments dont work.
if there is a shower, make sure there are fresh, fluffy, new bath towels.
have some storage available for personal items. shelf with some empty tupperware tubbies, some drawers, etc.

Sounds like you know what to address then.

Yup. Time for a new kid.

My 10 year old has no issue operating an old Skipper II… never been a problem.
globalgelato@reddit
I have no idea what the problem is, but if it's smell, just keep a gallon of fresh water in the head to rinse the toilet bowl after use. Also, try to use onshore bathrooms for #2.

Maybe convert to electric. I think Jabsco does a solenoid valve to allow for fresh water flushing which is a game changer for smell. The no paper bit is the only compromise made then.
seamus_mc@reddit
In twenty years of sailing and using both my manual and electric heads i have never had a clog in any of my heads from TP. My old boat i did freshwater flush because i thought it avoided the head odor while my newer boat is saltwater i have no issues with smell. Proper holding tank maintenance and venting is key to no odor.
kor0na@reddit
Wdym no paper? I have a jabsco manual pump and looking to get a jabsco electric with grinder and we always use toilet paper, the septic tank friendly kind.
StuwyVX220@reddit
If the smell is bad maybe also replace the hoses
Kattorean@reddit
Convert to fresh water flush & add a bum gun (bidet sprayer). Minimized smell to use fresh water & you only need TP to dab dry.

Thank you

It's hard to offer an assessment or solution without describing the sailboat or the head situation.
Both my sons grew up sailing with me, and living board boats from 23 to 52 feet long...sailboats and trawlers. But they're boys, so their sense of adventure overcomes any trepidation that may have about "accommodations."
That being said, my wife was absolutely thrilled that our present "big boat," a Sea Ranger 52 Trawler had vacuflush toilets installed. My oldest son's fiancée also likes the straightforward pedal-flush aspect, and is okay with all "TP" going into a secure trash can.
Aboard our previous boats (Ericson 23/27/29, Hunter 29, Soverel 36, Catalina 42) we had regular pump-flush Jabsco heads...which real sailors prefer for their simplicity.
