Just bought my first house and I need recommendations for home security systems/companies! Do I go with a local company, a big chain, or do it myself? Which companies do y'all recommend?

Just bought a house, and I'm over in Casa Linda so it's not too bad, but I figured I'd be safe just in case. Should I buy like a Google/Nest setup and install and monitor everything myself? Or should I go with a big plug and play company like Vivint or Simplisafe? OR should I get a local Dallas company like Smith-Thompson or something? I'm a first time homeowner, so this is all new to me! Any advice or recommendations are welcome.

I had Brinks many years ago but re-upping for a service like that just sounds like dread to me (just my personal experience ). My new home already had a Ring door bell and I love it. I see everyone who walks past my front door. If I ever wanted to add more security, I would just add other Ring products at appropriate locations around my home.
Of course, everyone has their own ideas and needs when it comes to home security, so others might require something different.
Before buying my new home, I used a national crime database when selecting where to buy. It breaks down what types of crime have occurred in different areas. I looked at overall crime rates, then looked at the breakdown of different crimes, finally drilling down on drug crime because of past experience with some people in a previous neighborhood. I am in one of the safest areas in Dallas County and that is saying a lot.
The thing about this crime database that I used is that crimes might be perpetrated in lovely neighborhoods and most people might never know about them. Or the high rate of kidnapping crimes has to do with custody dispute issues; saying that to say that there is nuance that doesn’t show up on this map. But I went extreme on only looking for homes in the areas with the least instances of crime.
Even though you have alteady relocated, I’m going to share the link to the database I used in case you or anyone else is interested.

We use eufy cameras. A doorbell cam in the front and a solar powered camera with a light facing our back door. They run similarly to nest and ring but there’s no subscription to use them.

I had ADT for years. They were basically useless, like multiple hour response times if an alarm went off.
Switched to Google Nest and just monitor it myself and I am perfectly content with that + knowing my neighbors.
Not sure how different these other home security companies are but ADT won't even call the police until after they show up to clear/verify the alarm. Seems like a complete waste of time and money.

I have ADT and am considering cancelling. So if I cancel and go the Nest route my alarm and cam system they installed is rendered useless then right? Meaning all the window and door chime stuff will stop working?
Jay_LV@reddit
Ya, the unfortunate part is that you'll have to replace all of that stuff. However, it's pretty cheap to get all of it. I think switching from ADT paid for itself within a year for me. Part of it was just my irritation that my alarm went off when I was out of the country and they said they couldn't send anyone for a couple hours because of high call volume due to the wind storm.
Like...OK, so what am I paying you for monitoring for if you can't be bothered to send someone by when my alarm goes off?
beccadot@reddit
Do not use ADT

I have a client who just purchased a new house with the settlement money she got from suing ADT for making recordings of her and her son with their cams without knowledge.

How did she know??

Do Arlo or ring and install it yourself. It’s not hard and if you need to buy a ladder, drill, and or other tools oh well you’ll them as a homeowner.
I really like Arlo and the ring security system is good we have that in our house up in MN. We have Arlo down here both are great.

Smith Thompson and adopt two dogs from the shelter. No one is going to come inside if they hear them in the house.

We have ADT but only the alarm and the glass break monitor. We use ring for our doorbell camera and I have two Blink cameras (one pointed at the back door and one at the backyard). Whatever you get, remember that if you live in Dallas you’ll also have to pay a fee to the city.

Smith & Wesson, Ruger, SIG Sauer, Springfield Armory, Glock
Cansum1helpme@reddit
I went with a German Shepherd and a 9mm for back up
Wild-Ad-2721@reddit
Monitored security is completely useless. Just get a ring.
CajunAsianTexan@reddit
Smith-Thompson. No contract, local in Plano, and priced very right.
isrealtomsmith@reddit
Have a security company come out for an interview. They will leave there sign in your front yard. Decline to hire them and leave the sign displayed in your front yard.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
Our house came with ADT signs still in it, lol.
We have a different system, but left the signs!

This is the answer

Welcome to the neighborhood!
We are also in that area, bought a few years ago.
We just do Ring.
It’s the same system we’ve had for years, just added more cameras and lighting when we moved here since bigger property.
No complaints with it.
EqualIllustrious9633@reddit
U don’t need it . In reality everything is replaceable.

For your safety, the safety of your children, and the safety of your pets, I do not recommend third party alarm systems that may send the police to your place without you realizing they are being sent. Use Blink, Ring, or similar camera systems. Then call the police yourself if necessary.
Virtual_Mechanic2936@reddit
I use the Blink Camera system. I like it. The batteries are pricey, though.
bananabob23@reddit
Save your money and buy a handgun. I don’t know anybody who has had an officer arrive after their alarm tripped.
dallasuptowner@reddit
We are very happy with Smith Thompson.
Merciless972@reddit
A Chihuahua, couple German shepherds, gun at every corner. And a donkey in the backyard.
This_Guy_Kyle@reddit
If you want local go with Smith Thompson. If you want the most features for an affordable price, go Ring.
woodstock9999@reddit
Agree!

I second this. I'm very happy with them. I had a smaller shop that I used that came with my house, and in comparison, ST was a deal.

Tech Security Expert: At the end of the day none of our stuff is private. I've given up a long time ago. I can go on a random form on the dark web. Give them anyone's name address DOB and pay a good amount and I'll know a lot about you.
But if you're the type of person that says well I want to at least try to be safe then internal CCTV cameras with no access to web. If you want to be able to see your cameras from your mobile device then make sure your cameras are only set up in transition areas never in the room where you actually live. The camera should never have a view of any of your screens, documents, or technology.
DO NOT GO WITH ANY COMPANIES. Big security companies (like AT&T, ADT, Brinks, etc.) often use standardized systems, training, and procedures. So if someone worked for one company, they kind of know how others operate too — like how alarms are set up, how long response times are, or even default settings they sometimes leave on devices. If someone knows the system well enough, it can be easier for them to find vulnerabilities across multiple places. Smaller companies sometimes customize more, which can make setups less predictable.
If you do go with a big company, you can still tighten things up by changing all default passwords, adding extra layers like cameras or smart locks, and asking for custom installation options.
Small ones are just as bad. They usually just use big company tech which is just the same.
Honestly, it's not all high-tech it's basic, analog stuff that works. Solid front door with a deadbolt, reinforced door frames, window security film, motion lights, auto-locking doors. Throw in a loud dog, thorny bushes under the windows, and a "protected" fake sign fake cameras and fake blinking red lights and most burglars will move on. It's all about making your house look like too much trouble.
The most unique thing I've seen is a loud alarm system that when pushed would wake up any of your neighbors with a voice communicating to the neighbors there was an emergency.
fruityrootytooty@reddit
I like Abode, which is self monitoring but you can turn remote monitoring by the company on when you go out of town for however long you like. The glass break alarm in particular is good, very sensitive. Like, sneeze and it goes off sensitive.
TerminallyE@reddit
Stay away from Vivint... They were a nightmare for my mom.
msondo@reddit
Another recommendation for Smith Thompson. Great local company and they also offer pest control services now.

Check out Green Security.

I've used Smith Thompson but did Simplisafe for my current house. Easy to set up and doesn't require professional installation.
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
I've used Smith Thompson and been please with them.

I have Google nest cameras front and back. Monthly payments are good

I’ve been really happy with Cove. It’s an easy install and reasonably priced. They are quick to respond if the alarm is triggered.
