Artificial air

They kind of already do this in submarines. Besides oxygen tanks, they extract it from the surrounding water through electrolysis and they also have a chemical oxygen generator - devices that generate oxygen through a chemical reaction. Early Soviet space missions used potassium superoxide, and so do submarines for emergency situations. The reason this technology is not used on a large scale is because chemical oxygen generators are a fire hazard. The chemical reaction is highly exothermic.
