Well, I guess I get negative points cause I still have a record/cd/tape player. But what about 8 tracks? My dad always had me listen to those too. Uh oh 50 negative points there 😆 🤣
Still zero for me. My Dad thought beta would win the format war. The quality on a Betamax is actually better and the tapes are smaller.
My Dad also had a decent 8-track collection of classic rock. I know classic rock means something different now. To me it means Allman Brothers, Cream, CS&N, Led Zeppelin, etc.
They were hanging on until 1988 or later. Columbia House was still producing select albums on the 8 Track format in 1988...and a few TV Record offers were still producing them into the extreme early 1990s.
A couple Columbia House 8 Track releases from Summer 1988 ⬇️
Wait - does it count if I took apart a Betamax tape, cut out portions to audio cassette width and wound it up in an audio cassette to see if I could hear the audio and if it would record audio properly? Because I did that once or twice...
Hmm.. never watched a betamax despite being around during it's era. I did use actual floppy disks though, those were fun with the little clip to secure them in place. Never used an 8-track, but I absolutely rented from local convenience stores, those were the days! Something about that memory really takes me back.
Yeah, we went to the local waaaaaaay more than Blockbuster (which I only went to a few times actually). And yes, it had a curtained-off room. Never actually used an 8-track, though.

I really like mine. Got a killer deal on it about ten years ago.
I wish I could find some guides on how to properly restore it. I’m mechanically inclined, but I don’t know much about them. As you can see, it’s pretty dusty because I don’t want to damage the paint/logo any more than it already is. I’d probably use it if it worked. Everything is in good working order except the striking arms stick.
Do you have any suggestions to repair one of the letter “arms” that has detached and no longer raises to imprint the letter? I bought a 1970s Coronet Super 12 for my 9 year old and the letter A arm detached from the inside. He loves that typewriter but I am not handy! Would love any tips.
It sounds like a linkage may have disconnected! They're on two tweezer shaped arms, and I was able to reattach one recently in the SCM I am working on using a dental kit and a lot of patience, and a very small hemostat.
This is an Olympia Report that was purchased by the previous owner in June of 1979. It is a model made right after they switched production from the West German factory to being rebadged Nakajima machines.
The older West Germany machines also had the same layout, like this one (on its side for repair currently as well)
1 because my family was too poor to own an encyclopedia, that was for the rich 😆
I will say, the only reason I’ve sent a fax is that I still have to occasionally send them in my job today when I’m interacting with certain government agencies, which is insane.
That's a 1 for me because I, personally, never swapped the records on the record player. But my parents had one and there was always music on. Seems to me it was usually Dwight Yoakam or Eric Clapton.
Also my experience, they were being sold at the grocery store so mom bought them when she could afford it that week we made it to R or T and the store stopped selling them. I mean, who needed the other letters anyway.
Lol, I scored a 1. Encyclopedias were expensive and my grandparents had a complete set from 1970. They also had a book about the Great War so I guess that was published in the early 1930s?
My great grandfather used to find encyclopedias in the garbage and bring them to my house. Lol we had a mix of different letters. Never the full alphabet.
We had a 1977 Encyclopedia set, minus V (in the 1990s). Because V doesn’t have a lot of things anyway, and math and science isn’t going to change. My dad thought he got a deal from a door-to-door salesman. It did work for 99% of my school research though.
I was actually one of the last lucky kids to have to take typing in high school. It was horrible. Only time I ever used a typewriter. I also had computer class the same year. It was brutal trying to use that typewriter. I hated it.
I mean I didn’t use a paper map, my dad did. I had this kids map magazine thing(can’t remember the name)where I could follow along as we drove to Florida. Does that count?
I don't think I ever went to a Blockbuster, specifically. We had a smaller chain near my house within walking distance when I was a kid, they stayed open til 2021.
Anyone else’s family primarily get videos at the library? Most of the time I was watching movies that were at least 10 or years old. I got videos at blockbuster when I got older but my folks probably never did.
I finally got rid of my Encyclopaedia Britannica from 76; had the *full* set: Red label was detailed items, Green label was shorter summary content but on waaaaay more topics, Blue label was the index to the whole thing. Together it took an entire 12 foot long shelf in the library. Since I hadn't used it for well over a decade and I had many other things to put on that shelf I got rid of it.
Had to send a fax once, when working in the electrical union outside of our jurisdiction essentially. Had to prove to the local electrical union I had my credentials. It was very confusing.
1 point for me because I've never owned an encyclopedia. I used them all the time for school work but it never made sense for us to own our own set when the school and local public libraries already spent that money for us.
0 but the vinyl record one is iffy. I've never learned to operate a record player or had a house with one in it, but I've had them played FOR me at someone else's house!
We had my father's 1954 encyclopedia set from when he was a child. Half the things I had to do school projects on - the space program, JFK, MLK, Vietnam War, weren't even in there yet. I remember having to do a report on Pablo Picasso and the encyclopedia said 'A Spanish painter currently living in France.'
I'd have 1 point. Never had dial up. I had nothing until 98 and that was DSL. All my home computer had was Word Perfect, Minesweeper, solitaire and Ski Free.
Encarta had this medieval castle trivia game, my mom worked at the library when I was in middle school I used to have the children’s and young adult area to myself on weeknights
Encarta came with my IBM Aptiva (1995), and it was indeed useless.
My parents then went out and bought Brittanica. All the info was there in text and some pictures, etc. But, if you wanted the full experience, you had to connect online. It was entirely based on Netscape Navigator, even the offline portions. It had a startup cd with the index, and then you swapped out cds based on whatever you were looking up. Then, it had links in articles to pictures, videos, recorded speeches, etc, and you had to connect online and wait 32 years for it to download. It came on 6 cds. You could install the entire thing, but I would have needed 3 hard drives just for Brittanica.
I never got to use a rotary phone! I wanted to so badly, because I had seen them on I Love Lucy. My mother told me they were horrible and we would never own one.
Mine were owned by at least 2 people before me and they were gonna be thrown out so I spoke up to get them. Didn't have them very long tho, had a new born and moved so I stored them in my in-laws garage for a couple weeks and they got wrecked. But then I got Internet so it is what it is lol
I’m saying you don’t need to give yourself a point unless you actually want to haha. I’d say even if your grandparents owned an encyclopedia and you used it enough that counts. But you do you!
The only 0 I think for be was 13. Blockbuster sucked. It had 10 of the same film but never any of the movies I wanted to rent. Plus they were a chain and were more expensive. Always supported local businesses, especially when they were cheaper and better.
Me too arbitrary # brother, but my score might be lower.
For me, this was:
Postcard, record radio to cassette, encyclopedia, *pay with paper check.
*didn't have any physical set in the house. Had some Encarta knockoff on CD-ROM with outdated and useless information. I did use Encyclopedias for papers on maybe 3 occasions in middle school.
**tried once, to pay for GBA games at Best Buy, but my ID was my passport, and their system used DL# to enter checks in the system.
1 out of technicality. My town didn't have a blockbuster until like 2005, and by then I worked at a Hollywood Video so I had no need or reason to rent at blockbuster.
Yeah, I also lived in town that didn’t have a Blockbuster until 2002. There was a mom and pop video rental store that my family rented movies from and I did work there for a year in high school
If I rented a video from a mom & pop rental store, not Blockbuster or if I rented from Blockbuster by mail when they tried to compete with Netflix does it count? Cuz that will determine my perfect score ...
Technically, I would have had to give myself 1 point because Blockbuster as a chain did not exist in Germany (we had other VHS rentals, obviously). BUT, I was in Canada in 2001 and they had Blockbuster, and I actually rented something from them one time, so yeah.
Who is this list aimed at, anyway? I wrote paper checks and sent a fax on Wednesday!
The only one of these I could even argue I get a point on is that, technically, I did not own a trademarked Sony Walkman, but I sure did have a few of the knockoff competitor devices
The only one that kind of gets me on this list is using a typewriter. I definitely used one for fun as a kid but I never typed anything for school or a job. The first thing I ever typed for school was on Word Perfect
I don't recall ever sending a postcard but it's not the type of thing I'd commit to long term memory. I still use an official walkman. It's waterproof and I use it swimming. I highly encourage getting one if you regularly do stuff in water.
Also a zero for me. Shit, I used typewriters almost constantly when I was in the military until the last 3-4 years when they finally transitioned the forms I used to something fillable on a computer. Me and typewriters are fast friends. Miss me with anything other than a IBM Wheelwriter II.
I mean, strictly speaking I’ve never done #9, but I have listened to music outside on a stereo. So, I’m gonna go with 0 for me.
Pretty recently (last few days) have done #7. Found a store that sells old vinyls and have found some all time great albums: Pet Sounds and Endless Summer by The Beach Boys, and Johnny Cash’s Live at Folsom Prison, all original, all in near mint condition. Plenty of more recently pressed ones too but those three are my favorites, bar none.
I was 14 years old and desperately wanted to be a writer. My brother bought me a thrifted typewriter for Christmas. 1998. We were poor as shit. I loved that thing.
I pay with checks for specific things now (electricians, etc). The last fax I sent was in 2017. I don't think I ever sent a postcard but did receive them.
All of these things. I think being raised by my Grandparents makes a difference here. They had the encyclopedia set. One of my Grandfather’s brother in laws worked @ IBM - GINORMOUS 1st computer. And the dial up phones my Grandparents paid rent on…which I accidentally broke one (baby blue) playing “office” when I was a kid. Man, you would have thought it was the end of the world. lol!
But faxes. Still use today. Get the damn “We Buy Cars” one every day. No matter how many times I’ve blocked the # or put ours on the DNC list. 🤦🏼♀️
0 for me too, however, a lot of these music things are kinda on trend for the kids. I feel like entertainment that is still around can still be enjoyed and therefore multigenerational. Which I love.. just means there's some 12 year olds that have more in common with us than we realize
I always score a point on this because I never rented from BB. The only chain I rented from was Hollywood Video. Otherwise, it was from independent shops.
I can’t remember if Ive ever actually used a mechanical typewriter. My mom had a “word processor” that I used for school a couple of times. But everything else I have definitely done.
Yeah, I am an MTV generation guy born in 1978. So I scored perfect 20 on this chart. Certifiably Unc, but I teach modern US History, so that's a mantle I am proud to wear, including telling puns and bad dad jokes to my students. My favorite one of these recollections was that we had a Blockbuster test store in my hometown, since one of their consultants lived there and owned it, and it eventually converted to a full Blockbuster when he sold it to them. They had some crazy out-of-pocket things, including a Nintendo Virtual Boy, and they pioneered renting video game systems. All of these were a normal part of growing up in the '80s.
Zero here. But what if your family only owned up to “L” on the encyclopedia set? Remember how they used to be so expensive and have financing plans and layaway shit for encyclopedias?? Crazy.
The only one that got me was “Owned an encyclopedia” Like just one letter’s book or a whole set? We weren’t millionaires owning a whole encyclopedia set.
Yikes I didn't think that I was THAT old. A solid 20 points, although a few of those things were considered old fashioned by the time I did them (rotary phone, using a fax machine etc.)
I don't think I ever sent a postcard since my family didn't really have money to go away outside of the Jersey shore for a week...but it was only an hour or 2 trip for us
I had a boombox, but I don’t remember using it outside. Also, I remember playing around with a rotary phone, but I’m not sure if I’ve ever called someone using one. Otherwise, yes to all on the list.
I drove from Florida to Maryland that way and had never made the trek before. So many trips all over the place and just winged it. On some occasions I didn’t even have a cell phone.
Do people not own dictionaries now? We have a small collection of reference books that I use fairly regularly (including dictionaries + thesaurus + style guides). I use online tools but they’re often not quite what I need.
Dang they coulda got a little more original with the list this is all just normal average stuff we all did all the time. Most people our age would score 0 on this list
I have dealt with fax machines in the context of IT, and it's likely that things were faxed on my behalf by a business or doctor, but I don't think I have actually sent or received a fax on my own.
By the time I started driving long distance, I was printing out directions from google maps and rand mcnally.
0, but I feel like I don't have a true first hand experience of dial up internet. I first used the internet through college in 1998, so the phone lines weren't a factor for me and I never saw that part of the startup.
Oh I definitely know the sound. But I suspect that's through TV and other references, or MAYBE if something went wrong with connection. My early internetting was through college and internet cafes, so the setup had already been done.
Got a one. Were you all millionaires?! I had CDs and a boombox and all that but how did you own a whole-ass encyclopedia set? Had to use those at the library man. Or did you just have like J-L volume, lol.
1 I never logged in to dial up, despite working tech support for internet in the early 2000's when dial up was still a thing.
Actually knew about bbs's in the early/mid nineties, but parents never had home phone as didn't see the point.
Zero. And re: #12, I just want to say that my little sister taped songs off the mickey mouse club. She recorded tweenage cover versions of songs from the TV by holding it up to the speaker. Let's make that #21 so we can all get 1's and my sister will be the only zero. B/c I'm not done making fun of her for this yet.
I get the concept of the post, but all you had to do is be alive during that period of time to do those things. I’m surprised there are people here who don’t have 0. Like how did you never record a song off the radio or send a postcard?
funkduck5@reddit

Big77Ben2@reddit
Used an encyclopedia would be more accurate. We certainly had to use them at school or go to the library to research a project.
Big77Ben2@reddit
I never personally owned an encyclopedia but I’ve certainly used them and had family members with them as a kid.
coogden@reddit
I’m mean do u get a fraction of a point if your only a had like A-F of the encyclopedia cuz your folks never went thru with the additional payments?

Also my experience, they were being sold at the grocery store so mom bought them when she could afford it that week we made it to R or T and the store stopped selling them. I mean, who needed the other letters anyway.
studiotec@reddit
Lol, I scored a 1. Encyclopedias were expensive and my grandparents had a complete set from 1970. They also had a book about the Great War so I guess that was published in the early 1930s?
OnlyGuestsMusic@reddit
My great grandfather used to find encyclopedias in the garbage and bring them to my house. Lol we had a mix of different letters. Never the full alphabet.
askthepoolboy@reddit
Was this the experience we all had?? My friends and I would sometimes trade with each other because we were all missing different parts.
lanakickstail@reddit
My parents had an old set published in the 60s. I still routinely used it for research and citing in reports.
latruce@reddit
We had a 1977 Encyclopedia set, minus V (in the 1990s). Because V doesn’t have a lot of things anyway, and math and science isn’t going to change. My dad thought he got a deal from a door-to-door salesman. It did work for 99% of my school research though.

I finally got rid of my Encyclopaedia Britannica from 76; had the *full* set: Red label was detailed items, Green label was shorter summary content but on waaaaay more topics, Blue label was the index to the whole thing. Encarta. It was useless
Taanistat@reddit

The fax one always irritates me because lots of workplaces still use faxes, especially in healthcare.
LlewellynSinclair@reddit
I mean, strictly speaking I’ve never done #9, but I have listened to music outside on a stereo. So, I’m gonna go with 0 for me.
Pretty recently (last few days) have done #7. Found a store that sells old vinyls and have found some all time great albums: Pet Sounds and Endless Summer by The Beach Boys, and Johnny Cash’s Live at Folsom Prison, all original, all in near mint condition. Plenty of more recently pressed ones too but those three are my favorites, bar none.
Puzzled_Loquat@reddit
We never owned an encyclopedia. Used em plenty. But the only thing we had was a small 2 volume set.. it wasn’t like the 26+ sets of Britannica
ABH1979@reddit
0, but I’m not sure playing with my grandmother’s typewriter counts as “using it” so maybe 1.

PartyFactor583@reddit
All of these things. I think being raised by my Grandparents makes a difference here. They had the encyclopedia set. One of my Grandfather’s brother in laws worked @ IBM - GINORMOUS 1st computer. And the dial up phones my Grandparents paid rent on…which I accidentally broke one (baby blue) playing “office” when I was a kid. Man, you would have thought it was the end of the world. lol! But faxes. Still use today. Get the damn “We Buy Cars” one every day. No matter how many times I’ve blocked the # or put ours on the DNC list. 🤦🏼♀️
