What Are Some Good L6/I6 Engines for a Swap?

I'm looking for an inline 6 cylinder engine to swap into my car. Specifically, something that can run on regular gas and preferably abundant or not too expensive. Thanks!

The truck or zx300? Id recommend a Volvo K024 if it's the Z

Vortec 4200 from a chevt trailblazer, etc. Bulletproof and cheap. Parts are pretty cheap, aside from cams.

I used to be a jeep guy and loved the 4.0. You will find massive amounts of aftermarket support.
Now I’m a truck guy, my grandpa left me his ford. It’s got the 4.9 300 and I’d take it over a 4.0 any day now. The things a torque monster with the same reliability.
I used to drive diesel Cummins Rams for work, prob like 800k over 4 different Duallys. People say I’m nuts when I compare the torque to a 300; but it’s similar somehow. I haven’t figured out how to describe it while still describing the power difference. It just drives the same.
There isn’t a massive cult following of 4.9’s like jeeps so the aftermarket support difference is astronomical. But there are still guys tubro/ supercharging tf out of them.
But I do know there’s an adapter plate to run a 300 engine on a 6r10 (?) 6 speed ford auto transmission. Idk what the options are these days on jeeps
Hope that helps. I honestly have no idea what a Z31 is but I I’ve loved those 2 engines.

Fitting a tall long engine under that hood is going to take some creativity, and most likely a "power bulge".
There are some rather unique engines that may be available a bit cheaper, while being more compact:
Daewoo/Chevy/Holden Tosca/Epica, which had an optional 2.0 or 2.5 Porsche designed DOHC inline six. This was a transverse inline six, but fit under a pretty low hood. Hard to find in the US.
Volvo B6304Tx engines, which were factory turbocharged and the B6304T5 made 350hp in factory trim. These are also very compact.
VW VR6, those can be built decently and are compact.
Any of these are going to require adapters and custom tuning for sure

4.2 Atlas

Abundant - Jeep 4.0
Thing is bulletproof to boot

As a jeep guy you are correct and the swap is so insane I'd love to see it

If weight over the front axle is a consideration have you thought about a turbo 4 cylinder?
New engines have tons of power with less displacement. A Mustang 2.3L ecoboost would fit.

Also Barra and TB48

Local flavour is your best option, in Australia you're talking about a Barra or Intech, in Europe you're talking about a Merc or BMW lump and in the US you're talking about a 4200 or an AMC/Jeep 4.0. You can still build or buy a JDM 6 cylinder hero engine, but the days of the pristine 2JZ you can buy with a single paycheck are gone.

2JZ, RB, and BMW makes a few that I don't know much about. People are trying to make power with that 4.2 Atlas from the Trailblazers to varying degrees of success. No real shortage of options
