I agree. How do we reinvent it?
Is Pixelfed anygood? Is it missing stuff?
crystaltorta@reddit
Pixelfed is gorgeous. Just missing enough members imo.
The creator is working on a TikTok alternative as well, called Loops
Spokraket@reddit
Yea you killed it.
kdjfsk@reddit
This. He says something about people spending 5% less time viewing friends posts, down from 23 to 17% or whatever.
Dude. Thats literally the only reason we signed up for FB, and still the only reason we visit. Instead they shit it up with ads, more ads, 'suggested for you' posts that are ultimately...ads. we see 17% of our friends posts because 83% of the site is just bullshit ads we want to block.
Id unironically like to see a facebook clone copying fb from like 2005. I dont think it would be the ultimate social media experience, but that did serve an important function.
monkey_spanners@reddit
I miss that fb. Or even old MySpace.
Facebook is totally broken for me now. I have hundreds of acquaintances on there but I only ever get updates from the same 5 of them. There's definitely at least 30 or 40 more people I'd like to hear from. They are updating stuff because I go and look sometimes, but it never gets over to me.
The rest is ads or groups or stupid Tiktok style videos.
crystaltorta@reddit
https://spacehey.com/ comes close to the old MySpace
kdjfsk@reddit
I saw part of the reason why they started doing that. its like the opposite of how reddit promotes popular content. On FB popular users content is popular. But those people dont sit on fb all day. They are on it 30 seconds to post about their amazing life then they go live it. Unpopular people are the ones who sit and scroll all day and watch the ads. Those are the cash cows, and fb found these unpopular people spend less time on fb if no one comments on their posts.
So the people who nonstop post complaints about their lame life get promoted, so the average user is more likely to engage with them, and make that person stay and keep watching ads. Its so twisted and miserable.
Imagine if their algorithm did the opposite. Popular people would become role models in their friend group, spread the good vibes, create awesome activity on the site...instead they promote miserable, diseased, depressed, angry users.
Yech.
ravenfreak@reddit
I wish it was over, I want more people to return to using forums again because they're still the best way to communicate online imo.
SoggyGrayDuck@reddit
Interesting, sounds like people are realizing what redditora have always known. If you limit your content to only your friends it's going to be pretty shitty compared to finding the best content from everyone
PreciousTater311@reddit
I'd still rather see what my friends are posting than "the best content" from ~~people I don't know and have no chance of getting to know~~ creators.
ruspow@reddit
Maybe if Meta showed us more posts from our friends and less adverts and random shit from influencers we never subscribed to, social media would be social media again?
PreciousTater311@reddit
Won't someone think of the shareholders?
PureFlatworm4428@reddit
FB A/B tests everything to death and found that showing people more AI slop and clickbait video thumbnails somehow increased time on platform. My guess this is driven partly by your 60 year old pervy Uncle Bill and billions of users outside the US.
king_rootin_tootin@reddit
I wish someone would buy Myspace to turn it into a newer vision of what it once was. Tom>Zuck
hideousox@reddit
What they are saying is that they pretty much only peddle ads and propaganda nowadays, like everybody else does, so they’re not a monopoly as all ‘social media’ is only engaged in shitting in people brains and that does not apply to Facebook alone but all of their competing platforms. Great news !
gdangutang@reddit
"Shitting in people's brains" is such a great metaphor for advertising. Bravo.
Xcalipurr@reddit
But advertising has existed for thousands of years
gdangutang@reddit
But?
Money_Star2489@reddit
i can't block r/enoughmuskspam. even here it's about rage bait and engagement.

Summary:
Mark Zuckerberg testified in the FTC’s antitrust trial against Meta, acknowledging the shift in social media from interpersonal communication to content consumption. The FTC argues Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp created an illegal monopoly, while Meta counters that the social media landscape has evolved, making the concept of a monopoly obsolete. The case’s outcome, influenced by evolving market dynamics and potential regulatory changes, could impact Meta’s future and the broader social media industry.

TLDR:
In 2020, the FTC sued Meta (Facebook’s parent company) for allegedly maintaining a monopoly by buying up competitors like Instagram and WhatsApp. The case is still dragging on under Trump’s current presidency, with Trump backing the lawsuit as leverage — much like he’s pressuring TikTok’s owner, ByteDance, to sell.
In recent testimony, Mark Zuckerberg argued that “social media” barely exists anymore — Facebook and Instagram have shifted into general entertainment apps, competing with TikTok, YouTube, and others. Meta claims there’s no monopoly because everyone’s now fighting for attention with similar short-form videos and messaging features.
The article’s author, Kyle Chayka, adds that even as the FTC chases old antitrust issues, the internet itself is being rapidly reshaped by new forces like AI-driven platforms (e.g., OpenAI reportedly building its own network). This suggests the government’s case risks feeling outdated, even if Meta’s past behavior once seemed monopolistic.

On a side note, this introduction is just awful:
"What, exactly, does a social network do? Is it a website that connects people with one another online, a digital gathering place where we can consume content posted by our friends?"
I feel like this is how I used to write in High School.

The power of a good CEO is to communicate effectively. Sometimes that means speaking platitudes like a child.
I'm not saying Zuck is a good person. He's good at what he does, even if he's evil.

Facebook changes what's shown on user's feeds to show vital sensations, inflammatory derisive news, and ads.
Users are not interacting with friends and family on Facebook anymore!
Social media is dead.
OstrichRealistic5033@reddit
Honestly, this whole situation with Meta and the FTC just highlights how far we’ve drifted from what social media was originally meant to be: connecting with friends, sharing moments, and fostering real communication. Now it’s just a giant content firehose, with algorithms pushing viral videos and AI-generated sludge. It’s more media than social. That’s why networks like MeWe and Bluesky are better alternatives, privacy need to be a priority.
AnwarBinIbrahim@reddit
Mark Zuckerberg realises Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Threads is dead as they are all owned by the hated Meta Platforms, which deplatforms people for political or economic beliefs with libelous slurs like ”hate groups”, “racism”, etc.
Today, we have decentralised social media platforms that are ad free. These platforms can be accessed via TOR or I2P Networks meaning a so-called “free” but ad sponsored social media platform like Meta Platforms is dead.
Today, nobody will rely only on one social media platform as people do not want to put all their eggs in one basket. They will use Google Youtube, X/Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit as well as decentralised platforms like Masterdon, so their opinions can never be censored.
acreakingstaircase@reddit
Of course he’ll say it in an anti monopoly hearing.
forking_shortballs@reddit
Don't get my hopes up, mark zuckerberg.

I hope not as we are launching our own social media.

Bruh, its a seriously bad look to shoehorn your self promotion links everywhere. Its spam. No one wants to sign up for social media developed by someone who spams it.

Thanks for the comment.
I liked to see which subreddits should we focus also.
Regarding your comment, we will pay someone to do these.

just like the "dependable" services like yahoo messenger or aol instant messenger suddenly abandoned everyone after more than a decade... yes please let facebook go away
Stiffylicious@reddit
The sky is blue and potatoes potate, what's your point?
Also, writing is so bad my highschool self could've done better with that horrendous opening.
MrWeirdoFace@reddit
Yes and no. It feels to make like my time with it is drawing to a close. I technically still have facebook, but just messenger and I use it only to talk to my parents and siblings. No timeline. I gaven't been on twitter for years. Reddit's pretty much the last social media'ish thing I'm still on, but I feel like my days here are numbered.
I think it depends on your age. I'm an "elder millenial" or "zennial" or whatever depending on who you talk to. I was there for live journal, myspace, facebook, and everything since then, but it's all feels dated now, and losing it's appeal. Not sure if it's the same with the younger crowd. I know tiktok is huge, but does that even qualify as social media? I'm honestly not sure.
