What would make it do this

I have a 1977 400 big block in a 1977 dodge power wagon and it it making this rattling noise and we took the intake off and there was a bunch of stuff on the pan under it so we cleaned it and it made it worse So we cut the gaskets off and just put the gaskets on there and not the pan and it’s still doing it What else could it be?

Your choke isn't coming on. That butterfly on the top should close when you pump the gas.

I don’t have to pump the gas
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
You should, it's what sets the choke. Otherwise you're getting too much air and it'll start lean and stall. It's very common knowledge that you should pump the gas at least once before cold starting a carbureted engine

Well my uncle or the guy before put electric pumps on the tanks on a switch and it starts right away
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
You still need a choke, whether electric pump or mechanical, you still need restricted airflow when first starting the engine. Pumping the gas is more for setting the choke than it is for delivering fuel, and you didn't set the choke, I can see it in the video

I also had started like 8 times before that I always do on the first one

Is your concern not that the engine only ran for a few seconds before dying?
DivideNo5814@reddit (OP)
No I shut it off It didn’t die I didn’t know how bad it was so I didn’t run it for long
DivideNo5814@reddit (OP)
It that one wasn’t a cold start

Figured it out It is the plate between the starter and the transmission

Thank you for actually posting the resolution. Now I won't be wondering forever and ever.

Starter indexing plate if you're looking for the common name for it
v8packard@reddit
Your starter or flywheel/flexplate are bad.
Do you ever set the choke on startup?
rudbri93@reddit
Starter isnt disengaging with the ring gear.
DivideNo5814@reddit (OP)
It’s not the starter
TollBoothW1lly@reddit
Gotta get a VGG starter rebuild kit.
