Why do people feel the need to talk to the phone on loudspeaker on public transport?

Or in general to be fair. Seen it a few times while taking public transport now. Why not just hold it to your ear and talk? is there an obvious reason i might be missing?
Severe-Health-4877@reddit
Strange individuals.
Few weeks ago I saw an elderly woman clipping her long dirty nails on the train without any tissue or any protective measure. Can't describe how enraged and disgusted I was.
Comfortable_Pace_923@reddit
Yuk.
Popular-Ordinary4808@reddit
That's gross,
Severe-Health-4877@reddit
It still haunts me hahaha. Repulsive
No-Daikon3645@reddit
Because their lives are so interesting that every little nobody needs to hear all about it. Or, perhaps they are just inconsiderate pricks.
Comfortable_Pace_923@reddit
The latter.
Willing-Confusion-56@reddit
Because they're cunts.
Comfortable_Pace_923@reddit
Couldn't have put it better myself😁
Popular-Ordinary4808@reddit
Lol I agree totally even with the C word, it is spot on
Street_Inflation_124@reddit
Literally came here to say the exact same thing
Content_Wafer6810@reddit
Yes 👍 about the same as I was going to say, mate if I hear someone do it I get on my phone and start shouting.
Content_Wafer6810@reddit
I don't give a shit and if I get on a bus with all the windows shut steamed up I tell them can you see all that shit on the windows......that's all your virus filled breath, get some fucking windows open you all have coats on, I'm a pretty big intimidating guy even though I'm not I just look it and they fucking listen
mooosylucy@reddit
You need to calm down mate.
Content_Wafer6810@reddit
Yes I do, it's a really negative trait of mine me and health professionals are working on
Content_Wafer6810@reddit
I'm not violent or a bad person but very vocal and get stressed easy
Appropriate_Dig_252@reddit
Rolls back into the statement of "they're cunts", because you are one.
Content_Wafer6810@reddit
Oh I'm a huge Billy Bunt, I will be the first to admit it, but to change you need to accept responsibility and that your flaws are your own fault and nobody else's, there's too many people going around making excuses for every daft thing they do
mooosylucy@reddit
Well done. I know it's not easy. Keep working at it.
Content_Wafer6810@reddit
Yup we grow and learn and hopefully become more wise in the process
MTFUandPedal@reddit
Some of them are also idiots who don't know how to use a telephone....
notyourcupofteamate@reddit
I have seen this as the answer to tooooo many questions today.
LoccyDaBorg@reddit
To be fair, "because they're cunts" is usually the answer to any question set out in the form, "why do ABC do XYZ?".
Matthew_Bester@reddit
Damn. Beat me to it.
bonjajr@reddit
Case closed
Federal-Star-7288@reddit
This is the best answer. Fuck those cunts.
pic_strum@reddit
I was going to write exactly the same.
Glad to see that I am among friends.

Everytime I see someone do this they look exactly like you'd expect. A thick sheep.

I think it's because phones aren't primarily designed for phone calls anymore. The speaker positions force you to put your face against a screen that may already be warm. They aren't optimally designed to point sound into your ear (since it's facing a screen).
Dolphin_Spotter@reddit
HELLO, I'M ON THE TRAIN
mooosylucy@reddit
WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU
imtheorangeycenter@reddit
Someone stole the big phone recently. Dom was gutted.
BumblebeeNo6356@reddit
YEAH, ITS SHIT!
Lonely-Job484@reddit
This annoys me no end. It's up there with people playing videos/games/whatever on speakers. Especially in enclosed spaces - planes, trains, restaurants...
I can only assume it's a total lack of awareness of the existence and experience of others.
__globalcitizen__@reddit
Someone once told me he did it not to get radiation in his brain.... As someone who deals with ionising radiation, it's so funny and frustrating at the same time to see how people freak out about things that are completely harmless.
DigitalStefan@reddit
Had a similarly idiot exchange with someone on a local FB group. They were arguing about the 5G (of course). They linked me to a page that had dozens of "peer reviewed studies" about the harms.
I picked on of those at random, looked up the author and found they had disavowed all of their prior work on the topic several years prior.
I also pointed out "you think mobile phone towers are bad, wait until you find out about the sun!"
They shut up after that.
__globalcitizen__@reddit
Or how much more radiation they get when flying....
ChampionshipOk5046@reddit
Holding it up to your ear is tiring I guess.
Delicious-Program-50@reddit
I don’t do it cos I’d never even get my phone out in public but I really thought they did it cos they couldn’t hear properly. If not then it’s just like those fake idiots that feel the part to walk into work with a coffee cup! It’s so pathetic!
RedViking81@reddit
Because they are thick as mince, I believe it started with seeing the Kardashians doing it, but they had to do it so the cameras picked up the audio of whatever non important nonsense they were talking about. I have a white noise app on my phone, I ramp that up if the clowns are doing it near me.
Pink-socks@reddit
Here in the UK it was The Apprentice which popularised the holding a phone on speaker and taking loudly into the microphone thing
gooner712004@reddit
Genius, I need to do the same
mooosylucy@reddit
Thick as mince 😂 actual lol, thank you
raccoonsaff@reddit
I know some people are hard of hearing - my nan struggles to hear her phone unless its on loudspeaker, and very occasionally has used her phone on the bus if my grampy rings.
Otherwise - absolutely no clue. To annoy others?
truepip66@reddit
because they're a pain in the arse

I sometimes ask, is this a private conversation? Or can anyone join in?
avamissile@reddit
Not that I talk on the phone often (if ever), but if I did, I’d have to use speakerphone because I’m profoundly deaf and it’s the only chance I’d have of being able to hear the other person.
Longjumping-Basil-74@reddit
Everyone is fucking deaf when attempting to talk on the phone on public transport
ZakFellows@reddit
Because they saw too many episodes of shitty reality tv and just think that’s how phone calls are made.
Self importance needs a good rock of reality to the face. Nobody cares about your conversation, nobody cares about your life so stop trying to force people to listen to the details of your boring as fuck life
Buck_Slamchest@reddit
I was on a bus the other week with a woman who was using her phone like this, The best way I can describe it is if you get your phone and hold the screen towards you, just under your nose, so your nose is touching the top of the phone.
That was when she was talking.
When the other person responded, she'd take the phone, hold it horizontally and try to insert the bottom part into her right ear, obviously listening to the person on speaker.
After a few minutes I was stunned to see her actually take it off speaker and start using it properly !
Mikon_Youji@reddit
Those people don't care what anyone thinks of them.
Ninetoeho@reddit
It’s a Nigeria thing, unless you know, you don’t know
Low-Cauliflower-5686@reddit
I have noticed a lot of people who do.it are from overseas. Not just from Nigeria though
Nice-Substance-gogo@reddit
Or don’t care apart from not bothering people. This is uk.
Ok-Advantage3180@reddit
I don’t do it on public transport, but for some reason I can never hear people properly on my phone if I hold it to my ear. But in public I’ll either use headphones when on the phone or try to hold it to my ear (not on speakerphone). If not, I’ll leave the phone call until I’m home
Jesterstear99@reddit
I stopped holding my 'phone to my ear when I developed hearing problems a few years back.
Putting it on speaker bizarrely makes it easier for me to hear what the other person says.
I certainly wouldn't have it on speaker in a public place though, or even use the phone unless it was an emergency- I don't want passers by listening to my private conversations.
I couldn't care less what influencers & Z list celebs do either.
History_86@reddit
I did in 2018/2019 on low volume for a few minutes then I’d tell them I’d call them back. Only because I broke my right elbow and couldn’t bend it for over a year and my left hand had my bags in. But those who have it on full volume are a nightmare especially FaceTime I just don’t get it. No one needs to hear your conversation
Nice-Substance-gogo@reddit
Desperate attention seeking losers.
Necessary_Umpire_139@reddit
Just speaking on the phone on public transport. Had a woman in front of me on the bus listening to a 3minute voice note, I'd like to have listened in to hear what was so important that it was necessitated, but sadly it was in Arabic.
TwiggysDanceClub@reddit
I blame The Apprentice.
PublicSealedClass@reddit
My theory is they saw them do it on The Apprentice [because multiple people on the receiving end actually need to hear it], and people just replicated it.
humaninspector@reddit
Why do people feel the need to talk on the phone on loudspeaker, in general? Being in front of their face, or loosely near their ear or similar. What's changed?!
keithmk@reddit
When I speak with someone on the phone, I hold the phone to my face as one normally does BUT I often have to have the loudspaker on. I am deaf, I have hearing aids but need them set high to understand the voice on the phone. This has the effect of also amplifying all the background sounds (traffic, noise of the train etc and also of course the white noise from the phone of the selfish, self-important idiot who says they deliberately play that loud to cause difficulties for deaf people). You know, all your insults and self centred comments here suggest that you are incapable of comprehending the fact that people other than yourself. Yes there are those who do not know how to use a phone and do that ridiculous thing of holding it horizontally away from their face, but maybe they have a particular need to do so which you cannot or do not want to see. I normally overcome the problem by using text media to communicate when I am out and about. Perhaps if everyone did and if everyone was less judgemental about the needs of others, the world would be a more peaceful and friendly place
fredster2004@reddit
Is it because the younger generation have never seen someone use a real phone so don’t realise they can hold it to their ears?
Queen_of_London@reddit
I avoid talking on the phone on public transport at all and do use the phone against my ear if I have to take a quick call for some reason. But otherwise, when not on public transport or around strangers, I only use my mobile on speakerphone.
It's partly physical - fucked shoulders make holding a phone up to my ear really difficult - and partly habit. It actually feels slightly weird to hold the phone to my ear like an old-fashioned phone (please see previous paragraph before getting annoyed at me). The habit part is probably why for most people, but I guess you can never discount disability.
Whatever their reason for using speakerphone, if it's a quick and practical call then I don't find it that annoying to overhear. Even if that does mean you sometimes overhear stuff that's far too personal, and least it's over quickly. For you, at least. Little Jimmy's Mum will have to put his uniform in the wash the second they get home and maybe have a talk about how to use the toilet.
When people chat and chat as if they were in their living room, it's really rude. I sometimes feel like joining in, since they've made me part of it already.
Sir_Henry_Deadman@reddit
I truly believe people have grown up watching people on TV or in movies talking on speaker phones not aware the reason is so you can hear the other person on film not because it's the way you're supposed to use them
Not_Good_HappyQuinn@reddit
Just to give you a different point of view, my phone connects to my hearing aids. If I’m on the phone you wouldn’t be able to hear the person speaking to me but I’d be holding the phone somewhere near my mouth because that’s where the mic is for my side of the conversation.
Those that actually use speak phone though and you can hear both sides of the conversation however, deserve your ire.
MJLDat@reddit
Because they are wankers.
It’s why I wear loops or noise cancelling headphones. Cut the noise out.
BumblebeeNo6356@reddit
Yeah yeah hi col, just calling about the pencil cases.
call092@reddit
Makes them feel like they got a busy life i think, have you heard most of these conversations they have?? Mostly unnecessary pointless drivvel
Used-Journalist-36@reddit
Because they’ve seen it on tv on the apprentice etc. and think it’s cool. And because they have a low iq.
Competitive_Pen7192@reddit
I think people who do that wish they were in the police or military. As the phone is on loud speaker and they hold it then talk into it like a radio...
ollymillmill@reddit
My absolute pet hate for no real reason except its stupid is when people who are wearing headphones talk on the phone holding the phone up to their mouths. Like the phone isn’t hearing your voice its the headphones!
HachiTofu@reddit
How else are you going to look like an Apprentice reject selling tat down the market?
Does baffle me how many people hold the phone away from their mouth and then lift it up to their ear to listen though. If only phones were designed to have the listen bit and the speak bit on opposite ends
Plop-plop-fizz@reddit
Obnoxious self importance? Main character syndrome? Influencer mentality of ‘everyone should know what I’m doing”? Cunts
sockeyejo@reddit
I'm waiting for someone to trip as they're walking and talking and swallow the phone so I can be proper middle-aged me and tell them that's exactly why they hold it up to their ear.
Affectionate-Rule-98@reddit
Main character syndrome
gouplesblog@reddit
No reason other than the fact they're rude and think they are the main character.
dvi84@reddit
Because they’re ignorant.
polymath_uk@reddit
Ignorance.
titlrequired@reddit
I don’t know why people in general seem to have forgotten how phones work.
