Not really - you have to remember that the average person looking in the sky and seeing a big military plane flying where a big military plane isn't expected won't be googleing for RAF cargo aircraft.
They'll be wondering why some bloody big plane is flying low over north London.
That would be the Mail, yes? They posted an article a couple of weeks ago about how a volcano in Alaska was going to devastate a bustling city. The mountain is 80 miles away from Anchorage and it will probably bustle more if there's an actual eruption.
My grandmother went through Katmai about 100 years ago. She had stories. She lived in Seward but was in Kodiak when it popped. You could walk up the ash onto roofs where it was drifted. Somebody measured 14 feet of ash somewhere she said. They washed their clothes and hung them to dry and the water/ash made a mild acid solution and suddenly their clothes were falling apart. She said everybody was walking around in blankets. All natural fibers. Pre plastic clothing.
Volcanic ash is an incredible fertilizer. The vegetation on some parts of the island is 💪🏼. Which in turn makes for very healthy 🦌
If you are ever on Afognak peel the moss off the top of a low limb on a big spruce tree. Katmai is under that moss.
I was falling timber in Cooper’s Landing when one popped. Was staying at Kenai Lake Lodge when my friend John Pezzenti owned it (RIP John). Can’t remember if it was Spurr or Augustine. Not much fun that’s for sure. Hard on everything and abrasive af. Minerals and glass is basically what volcanic ash is.
Anyway John was a world class photographer. For instance some of his eagle images are in the permanent White House collection. He was picky about what he would publish but he did put one shot out there. Let me find it and I will put it here.
Eh. The article is apparently written for general public, that's an appropriate amount of detail for the headline. The cropping doesn't show the caption or the story; that's where identification belongs, but for the casual reader who just needs to know "yes, that's expected," more detail would be clutter.
At this point I'm not even surprised and I've given up that mainstream media don't know /care about getting aviation details right. But rubs me wrong is, some members of this very subreddit don't know what this very common aircraft is. I almost lost my lunch, when very recently someone asked for help to identify a A-10! Bro, just google or reverse search B4 you waste this subreddit's time!

No you didn't. The runway isn't long enough for an atlas.

They don’t need a runway lol got plenty of videos if you feel like calling me a liar :)

My article was considerably more detailed than a headline needs to be.

Kanyiko@reddit
Okay, I retract my words, the article *is* good... it's just the title that really needs work.
"RAF cargo aircraft" would have made for a way better description than "Big military plane".

I suppose this description is better than calling it a Pilatus F-18 Caravan 747 Lockheed, but still.

Pro tip:
Ladies nylon stockings over the intake on your car. But only drive if you have to
If you only get a little bit of ash gather some up and save it for fertilizer
Ash can be acidic. Wear old clothes and keep them separated in the laundry
FixergirlAK@reddit
Yeah, we've got PPE where we can grab it just in case, though it looks like this event might be settling down.

Katmai was a big boom by all accounts. And the prehistoric Katmai eruption was a real ripper.

Why do they act as if this is big news? We get C-130s, 17s and A400s often. Admittedly not everyday but enough for this not to be on the news.
