Haven't posted in a while. My fiance wanted to learn how to work on cars, so we're building a dirt cheap Foxbody

(1) I took a day off last month and drove about an hour and a half away to pick up this running driving '89 LX with a 4cyl and a 5-speed.
(2) First thing we did was give the interior a good cleanse, vacuuming, and shampooing to get the years of neglect out.
(3) We took the running, driving car and made it neither of those things.
(4) I found a cheap questionable engine for our cheap questionable car. A friend of mine knew a guy that knew a guy that had a running 302/C4 combo from a '70s F-series that had allegedly been rebuilt at some point for $200. I bought it, tore it down, it looked okay. So we threw a new timing set, timing cover, water pump, oil pump, pickup, pan, all new gaskets, factory headers, and a Marketplace Edelbrock intake on it.
I later ran all the casting #'s and found out this engine is kind of a Frankensteined motor. It was actually out of an '86 T-bird, and has late '70s 351 heads on it. All low performance parts, but that's fine. The 4cyl T-5 can't handle a ton of power anyway.
(5) The car as it sits now, awaiting an engine.

I'll upvote any swap that doesn't involve an LS or SBC.

How dirt cheap is dirt cheap?
bemery96@reddit (OP)
Got the car and 90% of what I need to have a running, driving V8 swap for $3800 or so. As well as a rust free hatch and a ton of other odds and ends.

That’s not bad at all. Had to scroll too far to find this. I’m dreading when Fox bodies are hard to come by and I never picked one up.

No, and there's a handful of them for sale around me that are affordable. A couple of really nice 4cyl cars and a handful of rougher V8 LX and GT cars for around $4k. And parts are cheap and plentiful, both new and used.

What about the C4?
bemery96@reddit (OP)
Sold it. My fiance wanted something with a 5-speed that was less notchy and unforgiving than my Supra, and I kind of wanted the 5 speed in this car too.
Handsouloh@reddit
rock on brother, those C4's are rock solid!
Any plans for something stronger than the 4-cyl t-5?
bemery96@reddit (OP)
Nothing set in stone. I've seen several examples of guys running mild smallblocks and never breaking them, so I may just cross that bridge when we get there.

Pick me up some of that Taco Pizza.
bemery96@reddit (OP)
Man I grew up in a little town in the middle of nowhere and Casey's was one of like 3 food sources in town lol. I could go my whole life never eating Casey's pizza again
MidWestMind@reddit
I moved to the south in 2013, no casey's near me. I eat Caseys at least once every time I go back home. Also, Taco Johns....god miss them
One time I was in the middle of fucking nowhere western KY traveling and saw a sign for Casey's. The workers thought I was weird af just waiting around while the pizza was cooking.
bigfuzzyjesus@reddit
Moved from Iowa to Colorado, miss those two things a lot too and have the same habits haha. you’d think they would have more taco John’s around here because it’s from Wyoming but nope, there are a few but none in the Denver area. There used to be one up by the junkyards but it sucked ass and closed, like how do you fuck up taco John’s.
MidWestMind@reddit
I’m grew up in Iowa as well, just right outside Iowa City.
My son is graduating next month, so we are going to spend a week up there before he goes to the army to see family. I really don’t know what I’m more excited about, the local/regional foods or family. lol

My wife and I are from Cedar Rapids. Where everyone is a farmer and drives tractors to school (according to everyone I meet out here lol).

Hey my first car was an ‘88 4cyl 5spd! God that engine was dogshit, good call on the swap lol
bemery96@reddit (OP)
It is the slowest thing I've ever driven, barring a 60 ton mining truck. Before we tore it down, we took it around town and I was laughing my ass off driving it. I was running the crap out of it and wasn't even breaking the speed limit.
SilverbackIdiot@reddit
It truly is as much fun as putting your bare foot into a cold bowl of oatmeal
bemery96@reddit (OP)
That's a good way to put it. It was amusing for about 3 minutes, then I was annoyed and ready to have 4 more cylinders.
Doip@reddit
My 2.3 II with the 4 speed was hilariously slow too lol. Great little motor though, turbo it and it’ll take more power than a 302 can without splitting (not to mention the… 84? Sebring run where an SVO ran circles around the 5.0 because it was easier on front tires)
bemery96@reddit (OP)
I thought about doing a turbo build, but was weary of the cast pistons in the non-turbo 2.3

Cool

Fuck yeah!

Oh man, OP is the luckiest man on earth.

So cool, pretty jealous
rudbri93@reddit
foxboxes are a great vehicle to learn on. pretty light so even a mild 302 will be fine to have fun with.
agonymaster@reddit
Even basic tools and skills tou can get a lot done without feeling overwhelmed, Foxbodys are perfect to learn on
bemery96@reddit (OP)
They're super easy to work on. My Supra tends to be a pain in the ass, so this is a nice palette cleanser for me too.

Awesome

This is so great!! I’m kinda jealous
