Does collagen work for you?
Posted by mila-g97@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 40 comments
I’m 35 and been taking absolute collagen hydrolysed for 4 months, but can’t see much benefit. I read mixed reviews about its absorption etc and liquid seems to be the best option. I eat a well balanced diet anyway so not sure it would make a huge difference, but has anyone else noticed a difference? Wondering if it’s worth the €€.
Thanks

Collagen company here! The quality and bioavailability of the collagen matters significantly! A lot of companies cut corners and aren’t honest about where or what they’re sourcing. We use very high quality, bioavailable marine collagen, do extensive third-party lab testing (3x) and disclose the results, use organic ingredients, and are clinically-backed/Doctor-formulated. If anyone is looking for a good marine collagen. Let us know! We’d love to get feedback. :)

I am. My daughter sent me this thread to put me off and it nearly worked until I read this!

A company that sells collagen convinced you to take collagen? Shock
Your daughter has sense.

I did not convince her to take collagen, at all. I just saw the comment actually! But btw - I’m a former scientist that partnered with a Doctor to create a clean collagen company. We (genuinely) source top quality, very bioavailable collagen (meaning one that is absorbed well by the body) and use an organic whole fruit vitamin C. We set out to do this because so many companies misrepresent what they’re selling, aren’t honest, use low quality ingredients that don’t actually get absorbed, or are manufactured overseas. I’m not here at all to push anything, I’m here to learn what does and doesn’t work for people so we can continue to do better for everyone who wants to look and feel their best, since that’s human nature. If you’re interested in learning more about us, our website is byensante.com, or please feel free to DM me. :)
INTuitP1@reddit
The quality of the collagen isn’t the point of this post.
by_ensante@reddit
As someone who makes it.. it is. They asked if it works for you, you being general.
by_ensante@reddit
Don’t be deterred at all! Your daughter does make a valid point in the case of some collagens not working.. because they’re absolutely not all created equal, sadly, and the supplement industry is not regulated at all. I partnered with a Doctor to create a clean collagen company. We source very bioavailable collagen (meaning one that is absorbed well by the body) and use an organic whole fruit vitamin C. Our marine collagen 4 types of collagen is it (one of the few), we triple test for heavy metals and toxins, and we always provide our COAs for your assurance. Unfortunately, many companies misrepresent what they’re selling, use low quality peptides that won’t actually get absorbed, or simply cut costs. I come to reddit sometimes to see what does and doesn’t work for people so we can continue to do better for everyone who wants to look and feel their best. If you’re interested in learning more about us, our website is byensante.com, or please feel free to DM me and I’d love to get you a sample! No pressure to buy anything at all. :)

I wouldn’t take this thread as off putting. It’s got valid points, but I’d still choose collagen over Botox. I’ve spoken to people at work today and a few women take liquidised collagen and see improvements in their nails, hair, joints and skin. It’s the pills that don’t work as well.. gel is good.
your_swindon_lot@reddit
Hi - any benefit you perceive will be a placebo. Taking collagen supplements will do nothing to your health. Eat a healthy diet, drink lots of water and exercise instead.
glow__getter@reddit
You seem unusually dedicated to proving people wrong in here. What’s the motive?
INTuitP1@reddit
What’s wrong with combating misinformation?
glow__getter@reddit
You seem a little too dedicated to is what I meant
glow__getter@reddit
If you’re genuinely just trying to educate, then that’s understandable
glow__getter@reddit
You sent unusually dedicated to proving people wrong in here. What’s the catch?
AttersH@reddit
Not entirely true. It’s massively helped my joints as someone who does quite intensive exercise. This is a well documented health benefit!
INTuitP1@reddit
How exactly?
your_swindon_lot@reddit
There is no medical evidence that supports this.
AttersH@reddit
There is though. I’m part of a study in the UK looking at its impact on OA & RA, as evidence points to hydrolysed collagen reaching joint tissue & improving pain. Certainly, it appears to have made an impact on me. But maybe it’s placebo? Who knows but I’m in less pain, so I’ll keep going!
mila-g97@reddit (OP)
Ah that’s good to know! Thank you
Classic_Mammoth_9379@reddit
If the study is ongoing then presumably the evidence has not been published? And in any good study, at this point surely you will not know if you are taking the placebo or not?
NatchezAndes@reddit
Tbf, you referenced YouTube. That's not credible. It would be helpful if you linked to peer reviewed, actual scientific evidence, that disproves the theory.
your_swindon_lot@reddit
I don’t need to prove a negative but the very first google return is this: https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/considering-collagen-drinks-and-supplements-202304122911
“At this time, there isn't enough proof that taking collagen pills or consuming collagen drinks will make a difference in skin, hair, or nails. Our bodies cannot absorb collagen in its whole form….. Thus far, no human studies have clearly proven that collagen you take orally will end up in your skin, hair, or nails.”
NatchezAndes@reddit
Excellent. Thank you. And yes, in future, if you're attempting to belittle someone for not providing evidence of their claims, then you do need to provide evidence contrary to their claims. That's how science works.
your_swindon_lot@reddit
In science the burden of proof is on the person making the claim - ie in this case “collagen does xyz”
And no attempt to belittle - just proving clarity to pseudo scientific claims.
mila-g97@reddit (OP)
I do all of it anyway. With all the marketing around it I wonder if there’s any additional benefits as women produce less collagen after 30..
Affectionate-Owl9594@reddit
Ingesting collagen does nothing, I’m afraid
INTuitP1@reddit
It does nothing. Also putting it on your face does nothing.
Xylarena@reddit
I have it in powder form but it's a nightmare trying to mix it into drinks because the powder just just kind of sticks together in disgusting fishy clumps. I've not tried it since but curious about yours - is it like in a liquid form where you just add it to your drink?
by_ensante@reddit
Our powder is super dissolvable! And tasteless. Although we have one with light organic vanilla bean, and one unflavored. We’re on Amazon! And we have a website but I’m not sure Reddit will allow me to post it. Give us a try. If you don’t love it, we’ll refund you right away. :)
mila-g97@reddit (OP)
It’s like a gel, it comes in ready-mixed, tear-top sachets, I take it with a glass of water. Not the best tasting thing but is ok. I went with these as liquidised collagen consists of smaller, easier-to-absorb peptides. This allows the body to utilize the collagen more efficiently apparently comparing to pills or powders. Just so much out there with other supplements it’s easy to spend a fortune.. but is it worth it..
Cultural-Eggplant592@reddit
It's going into your digestive system. Think about it. It's never going to affect the collagen production system in your face.
Xylarena@reddit
This just reminded me of when I refused to take paracetamol for the fictional "headaches" I used to get out of School - telling my mum "But how can it help when the pill is going into my stomach, and not up to my head?"
Cultural-Eggplant592@reddit
Not really the same thing. The reasons there are known.
Munching on collagen pills isn't going to magically make the skin produce collagen.
kripantina@reddit
Took collagen peptides 4 months before falling pregnant and still taking through the pregnancy, currently 37 weeks and no stretch marks. Although I have plenty from teenage growth spurt and all women in my family have very extensive marks from pregnancy. I attribute it to collagen.
Cultural-Eggplant592@reddit
The problem with anecdata is someone like me comes along, 9lb baby, petite mother, no stretch marks - no supplements.
It's luck of the draw.
mila-g97@reddit (OP)
Sounds good! I used to rub avocado oil into my tummy and bum twice a day to avoid stretch marks 🙈🤦🏼♀️ it worked by the way!
AttersH@reddit
I use 100% bovine collagen power (I mix it into my protein shakes). I have done 2+ years, partly in the hope it may improve my skin slightly but also for my joints as I do quite intense exercise 5-6 days a week. It’s really helped with some stiffness I had in various joints & I’ll keep taking it for that reason alone. I’d say it’s had a minor impact on my skin, which I’d say is a little less saggy overall 😅 but it’s def not going to transform your skin back to your youth unfortunately. But it may prevent further aging as well, which is no bad thing!
Top_Necessary@reddit
I use hunter gather bovine it did work for me .. made my skin much better but don't really like the brand... Think they are blood suckers lol... Anyhoo
