We are 3rd country couple living and working in Budapest also holds TAJ card + basic medicover plan from company.
Looking for recent parents experience of government/private and the process of getting through all cycles of pregnancy and maternity.
Thanks in advance.
Note: I could not find any relevant information in web, so reaching out here on behalf of my wife. Shunted out from Facebook groups due to language barrier.

Btw for language barrier in FB groups, just use DeepL to translate back and forth.

Sure, thanks. We found Gynecologist at public hospital speaks moderate English and highly reputed doctor.
So, all seems ok for now.

I don't have experience but my friends recommend János kórház, it supposed to be the best maternity, delivery place in the city amongst the free goverment hospitals from the private clinics some friends had babies at Duna Medical Center, it supposed to be good too and you could try Asszonysutyorgó group on Facebook, it is for women topics only :) good luck and happy expecting!

Really János Kórház? My wife went there because of a miscarriage. The maternity looked like it wasn't painted in 50 years, no water in the toilets etc. Maybe it changed in 5 years but I highly doubt.
Still, maybe the others are even worse?
Doctors were nice and professional though. Just the place...

As far as I know it was renovated in 2022 or 2021 and it became very good, lot of good staff was relocated there as well from Szent Imre Kórház

To be objective, state hospitals provide high standards for medical care for you and your newborn kid. I mean, its safe to go there. But in some cases, you would be given less options to choose from, you would not be involved in decisionmaking and the doctors will try to have your kid born more faster than comfortably.
What private hospitals can provide might support you mentally (more comfort, doctors/staff might not be exhausted, better food, more options to choose from, less room mates or even being alone), but it costs a lot of money (1M to start).

Thanks for the insight. We are thinking to wait for couple of appointments with public doctor to decide.

Wish you health and happiness!

The maternity care and the labor in the public hospital is free of charge. The public hospital is appointed based on your permanent address, and the midwife and doctor are random. If you already pregnant you need to go to your district védőnő until week of 12. If you have money highly recommended to go private clinic. The labor cost 1-3 mio huf, the maternity care is around half million. Good luck

Thanks. We booked district hospital Gynecologist appointment. May be he'll point out to meet védönö.

Congrats! Commenter above is right. However before you decide to have your baby in a private clinic or not, please be aware most private hospitals do not have NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). In case any issue arise during labour, the NICU is equipped to handle it, so having the NICU in the hospital where you give birth is a safety measure that should be considered.

TritonLife Robert has PIC. Thats the reason had our baby born there.

https://www.antsz.hu/AntszDistricts/HealthCareVisitorSearch.action?clientid=antsz Here you can find. You need to add the city and the street based on your address card

Super thanks 🙏

I had a really great experience with Maternity. They handled my prenatal care and labor/delivery and everything was exceptional, about 2MM HUF for the full care.
I believe they’re also currently building out a NICU on site (double check to confirm, but I’m 90% sure that’s what they mentioned)

Thanks 🙏
Did you get address based midwife or from private hospital? I heard the booklet from midwife is crucial for employment/maternity benefits
lady-d-grey@reddit
From the district védőnő. In this case, Maternity’s prenatal care doesn’t begin until 12 weeks so your wife would visit the public before then and have initial discussions and get the book
SassyPandaToldSo@reddit
Congratulations guys :) Your wife must contact the local midwife, you can find her on that site, based on your address: https://www.antsz.hu/AntszDistricts/HealthCareVisitorSearch.action?clientid=antsz The booklet will be given by her, after the 12th week of pregnancy. The gynecologist will give you a justification that the baby (fetus) is older than 90 days, so the midwife will start to complete the booklet.

Thanks, we booked the appointment with Gynecologist first to get confirmed and then will reach out to GP&Mid wife

I would highly recommend medicover for maternity care. She can join their facebook group in order to ask around. I’m sure there are mommies from abroad or have the language skill to reply her/your questions :) (Medicoverben szülök/szültem Unofficial)
