Best messaging app to use

Reddit is forcing their abhorrent and ghastly chat feature on us all in June, so I won't be messaging on here anymore. The messages feature was so much better. Discord is terrible with notifications. I prefer something that doesn't require a phone number, if such a thing still exists. But, I'm just looking for reliable notifications and good messaging system for when I want to talk to people online. If there's a better place to post, please let me know

I'm on Troop Messenger, some features like burnout and AI responses are simply nice.

This has no notifs, but im testing it, so far ok, mutual follows needed to message each other. stripped down version which is really what i want - https://side.chatmemaybe.com/

I’ve found Brosix works well. No phone number needed, notifications are reliable, and it’s simple to use for messaging.

I’ve been using Brosix for messaging recently, it’s pretty reliable, doesn’t require a phone number, and notifications work well for me. Might be worth checking out if you want something simple and secure.

Try Qringle. It’s new, but it’s free and freeing, safe and secure.

Matrix/element is nice. Its e2e encrypted, so its secure.

you’ve gotten all good recs here, but i do want to throw in my two cents that signal seems to genuinely be increasing in popularity
threema and simplex are probably a little bit better in terms of privacy/security, but a lot of people dont want to download new apps, or pay (like threema). simplex my friends and i had too many bugs; maybe they’ve improved now but it caused a lot of issues at the time. same thing with session (another one i’d recommend)
signal is kind of a middle ground where it generally works well and since it’s gaining popularity, you’re more likely to run into someone who has it or has been at least considering it, and even if there might be “more secure” apps, signal itself is still up there. and at least in my experience, it’s been pretty reliable. i like the design and features.
signal does “require” a phone number, but you can sign up with a cheap throwaway number using something like textverified.

Signal only lets you use it on one device at a time.
eHug@reddit
It does? I have it on my PC, my phone and my tablet and never ran onto any issues.
DegeneratesInc@reddit
I've tried to install it concurrently on 2 phones, and then a phone and tablet and it has refused to coexist. I haven't tried a PC.

Thanks. Did some research and it seems you really can only have a main device and up 5 linked desktop clients. My PC and my iPad are linked desktop clients then. Maybe you could add your second phone as another desktop client? Not really sure if that's possible, but in theory you can have up to 6 devices that way.

I ditched it and went to telegram. Its security is enough for my needs. I'm not copy-pasta state secrets or war plans or anything.

kinda? seems to be one phone at a time, but i’m also able to use the same account on computers. there’s a linked devices option that specifies desktops and iPads

Not sure it will be similar to exactly what you want but you can test our Reddit alternative called LetIt.
We also support chat, not perfect yet though.

The best messaging app to use is the one which is already used by the people you want to send messages to.

Threema
is a good messaging app that doesn’t require a phone number.
HOWEVER, not least because there is a small one off charge of around $3, I haven’t been able to convince people to use it - Most people can’t see beyond WhatsApp, let alone Signal or Telegram.
