Is there any point in trying to build credit in the UK as a temporary resident?

I'll be here for at least 4 years. There is a chance that it might extend to be a little bit longer but it's very unlikely that my partner and I would stay longer term or to retire.
I have built credit in the last two countries where I lived. There it was worth having good credit even if you didn't plan on getting financing because it gave better access to credit cards with rewards. My last credit card gave 1% cashback on all purchases which was pretty nice since I made all my purchases through it and got back a noticeable amount every few months. Having the extended credit limit also helped out in a few circumstances. If I kept going I could probably apply for better ones.
Here, I don't drive or plan to own a car, though I do plan on hiring in the future. Do they do credit checks when you request a hire? One company I was looking at seemed to do so. As we don't plan to retire here we don't plan on buying a house either. And, from what I understand most people in the UK and in the EU use debit cards because there isn't much of a rewards/cashback system.
As far as I know, being so new to this country the only way I could build credit is by getting one of those easy-to-get credits cards with ridiculously high APRs just to buy stuff with it to pay off in time. Seems risky for little benefit. What do you guys think?
