The pure rush of having a plane fly just a few meters over your head is indescribable

I guess a P-8A Poseidon?

P8, yep. Not sure about the exact variant, but the exact airframe shown was ZP809.

And that's just a cute itty bitty little embraer. You ain't seen *nothing* yet! If that were a 777, the weight turbulence would have knocked you half on your ass. It would have been glorious!

Oh, you're giving me ideas! There's a scheduled Air France Cargo 777F service every Tuesday & Friday at Prestwick, and I can get within 750ft of the runway (550ft in the video shown here). Same goes with Cargolux's 747s, but more frequently.

Danitoba94@reddit

I don't even care if you record that or not. Just *experience* it. Also I do recommend ear protection.
View on Reddit #54118187

aryvia@reddit (OP)

Yeah, I had ear protection at Lossie as well. Noise cancelling headphones were on all the time. I made the mistake of not doing so once when I was stood next to four F15s on full afterburner - never again.

>Noise cancelling headphones Do those actually provide adequate protection?

Worked well while I was there.

Fine. XF-84H Thunderscreech
View on Reddit #54118850

Okay. But you got to go out there with them. 😈
View on Reddit #54118933

Pinksters@reddit

I'll head down to Wright Patterson AFB and talk them into firing up the Thunderscreech they have. People in Cincinatti would be able to hear it.

What kinda airport has such large planes with such a low wooden fence? Only small airports that have some Cessnas and stuff and maybe the occasional small private jet have fences like that in the UK, any airport of even significant size or traffic type has massive gate
View on Reddit #54089434

Hot_Net_4845@reddit

It is a military base, so you'd probably be swiss cheese if you tried
View on Reddit #54090299

aryvia@reddit (OP)

Yeah, the incessant "WARNING: RAF POLICE DOGS" signs (as well as the people in boxes with rifles) dotted around the fence made it quite clear that you'd be breathing through a hole in your chest if you tried anything.
View on Reddit #54114585

kj_gamer2614@reddit

Yes, that’s fine, but it still allows easier access. Military bases around me also have high fences protecting them

Before 9/11, you could hang out in a spot like that all day with your camera and a rack of your beverage of choice and no one would bother you... ;/

View on Reddit #54091549

Many places consider it "suspicious activity."

I haven't actually had any issues spotting outside of airports - even at some of the ones where you'd expect them to shout at you. I was sat at this exact spot at Lossiemouth for a good few hours, and, despite having countless RAF staff drive by me, no-one gave me any issues.

And now imagine it happening in person! I definitely don't regret my choice of bringing noise cancelling headphones.

Reminds me a bit of the scene in Pushing Tin where John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton go out onto the runway and get blown around by the jet wash/wake turbulence

OK, that's more like 40 meters, but it's still pretty amazing.

Is this AI generated? It has raked wingtips, a Boeing cockpit window shape, but it only has 2 wheels per bogie, and the tailplane looks wonky. Besides, the video feels sped up.

There would be a lot of perspective distortion since this was on a 16mm lens. At the beginning and end, it was zoomed in to 50mm with 2× digital zoom ontop. The aircraft shown is a Boeing P8 Poseidon.
