Digg.com is apparently being rebuilt and relaunched (alexis ohanian is involved)

I don’t mind early adopters paying $5. I wouldn’t, but some people want to be in the beta and that’s fine. I’m just desperate for something other than Reddit which isn’t full of crazy people like Lemmy. I guess it’s the community which makes the platform, and I don’t know how they’re going to prevent the site becoming American politics 24x7. I’m so tired of American politics. I would be happy to never hear another word about American politics.
DIYDylana@reddit
What's crazy about them?
TheuhX@reddit
Lemmy whilst blocking lemmy.ml, hexbear and lemmygrad isn't bad.
Perfect_Cost_8847@reddit
All the “moderate” instances like lemmy.world and sh.it just.works are also American politics 24x7. Even communities like Technology and Memes. It’s chronic. It’s full of people who defend it by saying things like “EvErYtHiNg Is PoLiTiCaL.” If you could suggest another populated instance which isn’t mostly American politics I’m all ears.
mighty3mperor@reddit
What you could do is sign up to an instance with more of a focus (literature.cafe for books, for example) and then get a good list of subscriptions going. As there is no recommendation algorithm, you see exactly what you chose to see.
polymath_uk@reddit
British politics?
mighty3mperor@reddit
feddit.uk
DoNotCommentorReply@reddit
You should learn to Internet better. Skill issue more than anything
Surous@reddit
Honestly I just hope some forum-esque platform has a way to filter all post with X word in it
CoopThereItIs@reddit
The obvious question that I’m not seeing anyone answer is this - do you get anything with the $5? I guess you get first shot at a username
UnflinchingSugartits@reddit
From the posts I've seen and what I've been told, yes you get a username but that's it. Basically you're paying 5 dollars to be in their circle app group chat. Which is a totally different platform
The_Frame@reddit
Correct. I paid the $5 I got my username and that's about it. There is a random site I gained access too but it has pinned posts that this is not the new layout and is just a community circle jerk basically.
busymom0@reddit
Do you get access to something like screenshots of the new site? Like how it may look in future?
The_Frame@reddit
Nothing yet. If they share they haven't done so as if last week (the last time I went on the hangout website)
manitowwoc@reddit
This week they did share the prototype home page and a discussion about it
kurai01@reddit
As an American I too would be fucking thrilled to not hear about the shitshow I didn't vote for. ❤️
mastervadr@reddit
I mean… you realize you have the option not to use Reddit?
You can bury your head in the sand but doesn’t mean American politics won’t affect your life for the foreseeable future ^(unfortunately).
NorthSideScrambler@reddit
There are more options than politics all day every day and no politics ever. Likewise, checking in on politics once every few weeks or months is not burying your head in the sand.
Pleasant-Shallot-707@reddit
The dumbest people are the people who ignore politics
SoggyGrayDuck@reddit
I just want it to be natural and not over moderated. If you stop the bots from pushing whatever story the left has today on 90% of subs it will clean it up.
Pleasant-Shallot-707@reddit
The left huh? lol get your head out of your ass
deus_deceptor@reddit
Bots aren’t inherently used by the left nor right. They’re used by the enemies of liberal democracies to turn their citizens against each other.
Pleasant-Shallot-707@reddit
It doesn’t matter if you don’t fuck with American politics. American politics still fucks with you.
frsthvl@reddit
How about havn.to?
digitaldisgust@reddit
The front page is just weirdo degenerate confessions, no thanks 😂
TenTonTube@reddit
wow, first thing I see is someone saying they like Andrew Tate. I can't even comment on the post. broken ass incel site
Perfect_Cost_8847@reddit
I like the structure but it looks empty.
frsthvl@reddit
Yea it is. It is online for only a few days. This project just started.
Same-Set8163@reddit
First of all, I am assuming you’re American, and so it should go without saying we’re living in wild and unprecedented times. Whether you like these times or not, it’s hard to argue that it’s a darkly historical time period in the country. It’s more than expected that there will be an uptick in non-political subs having otherwise politically tinged, if not outright political, content because unfortunately this authoritarian government is causing a lot of pain, anger, and chaos amongst the populace. All of this said, there are definitely “crazy” people on Reddit and Lemmy, as there are in every facet of life. I’m assuming by “crazy” you’re referring to people with political views you disagree with. As someone who uses Reddit and Lemmy (and will try out Digg when it’s out), I can safely say I don’t have your issues. I carefully join subs that I like and if there is one I don’t like I leave it. It’s really not that complicated. As far as the business model of paying and ads and algorithms and power hungry mods- that’s another story. In my mind it’s hard to argue against Lemmy, though. It’s independent, free of corporations and FREE. They even have conservative subs for people like you who are tired of all the “crazy” lefties out there. The user base is small, but still active. And instead of whining, people like you could go join it and make it bigger and better.
jdbolick@reddit
Lemmy was literally created by tankies. Yes, you can limit your exposure if you curate your feed and block certain instances, but most people don't want to jump through hoops to make the experience tolerable. And I definitely don't want to do what you suggested by intentionally engaging with tankies to make the user base more balanced.
I do like the idea of Lemmy and I hope it continues to grow, but it's just not for me.
Alkiaris@reddit
Blocking the instances one user above mentioned is the same (less, really) as unsubbing from the defaults you don't like after making a new account on Reddit. Blocking those removes users from those instances IIRC.
Delicious_Ease2595@reddit
Naah man if you find a smallish active Lemmy instance is far better than the retarded crazy redditors.
FaolanBaelfire@reddit
This is owned by the same CEO that ruined Reddit. No thanks
No_Interaction4042@reddit
Alexis got out before things tanked. It's Spez you hate.
waldito@reddit
They started beautifully! Want to check the beta? Pay!
Off to a great start.
Passive_Bloke@reddit
At this point, I’ll try anything…….
mighty3mperor@reddit
Lemmy?
waldito@reddit
That'll be 5 bucks, please. Let's hope you get at least 10 upvotes for that.
dwerg85@reddit
Did you actually get one of the mails? Because it’s pretty clearly spelled out why they’ve it and what happens with the money.
triangularRectum420@reddit
Pretty clearly spelled out? I guess you can say that...
Tebwolf359@reddit
Is it pay + ads, or pay instead of ads?
While I don’t need more subscriptions for anything, I will easily admit the internet as a whole would probably been much better technically, ethically, and content if it was paid instead of ad based for revenue streams all along.
Far better to be the customer then the product
Electrical_Room5091@reddit
I used Fark.com then Digg.com and eventually moved on to Reddit. Reddit borrowed ideas from other sites and made them better.
heric1@reddit
Did anyone actually read the early adaptors email?
The $5 is a donation and all goes to charity (zero profit). The main goal is to prevent bots in the beginning.
We can debate if that’s silly but it’s not a cash grab.
dwerg85@reddit
Yeah. People don’t read. And honestly, a platform where there’s a paid tier to keep the bs out and provide an income stream is not even that bad. Free shit will always lead to the same end result.
fruitybrisket@reddit
It is a good idea in theory, but I don't think it will keep bots out, especially at the state level. $500 for 100 bot accounts is just pennies to the Us, Russia, and China.
dont_ban_me_please@reddit (OP)
well... I mean with the way the Russian economy is tanking ...
MMORPGnews@reddit
It's not tanking. Oligarchs/elite become x3 rich compared to 3 years ago.
There's problem because they put 100-200% tariffs against many countries. (Trump copied them).
polymath_uk@reddit
The irony of people on reddit not reddit.
Die4Ever@reddit
has this been proven or is it just a pinky promise?
TheMastaBlaster@reddit
It says in the announcement the charity will be community chosen by the people that sign-up.
ThreeLeggedChimp@reddit
Does the $5 also get me API access so I can write a bot?
Delicious_Ease2595@reddit
It's a business they are not doing Digg just for charity
HeavenlyTasty@reddit
If only they added more payment options cause paying with credit card is not safe
HeavenlyTasty@reddit
For those who signed up for early access do they account nsfw content?
No_Measurement_6680@reddit
Why digg when there's already lƏmmy?
dont_ban_me_please@reddit (OP)
lemmy is crap. I tried it, I hated it. It's not a replacement for reddit.
RDForTheWin@reddit
Lemmy is not a reddit replacement. Mastodon will never replace X either. BlueSky took off and it was many times more users than mastodon.
NewManufacturer4252@reddit
Unless it involves a Kevin rose tossing raccoons, drinking 40s and getting yelled at by Leo Laporte for not knowing the ppm on a laptop, I'm out.
Pleasant-Shallot-707@reddit
The good ol days
dwerg85@reddit
That’s back.. diggnation is also up again.
Blarghnog@reddit
Yea. I was excited about the idea until I saw screenshots and got hit up for five bucks to join early access so I can grab an early name.
Same shit.
Foreforks@reddit
When they want money for a beta release you know they aren't in it for "YOU"
felixsapiens@reddit
I mean, I don't think it was necessarily a great move - but weren't they absolutely transparent that the $5 would be going to a charity? The whole $5 thing is more of a small filter to weed out "not totally interested, hanger-on sign-ups" and bots?
Foreforks@reddit
I like Alexis Ohanian, so they might be different
Headbanger@reddit
No one is in anything for you. Reddit isn't different.
Foreforks@reddit
Yeah, I'm off reddit once our platform grows
Headbanger@reddit
What is your platform?
Foreforks@reddit
https://peekspeak.net .. We launched like 2-3 days ago
digitaldisgust@reddit
Definitely not paying to join a mf forum lol
Otto500206@reddit
I hope that they succeed.
buntopolis@reddit
$5? What is this, Something Awful?
Density5521@reddit
And it's going to be a pseudo-currency buy-fest. Content will be secondary, the focus will be on buying credits to react and climb leaderboards and compare you dick to those of others. I'd love it if that weren't the case, but the recently leaked design demonstrates exactly that.
adamxi@reddit
Asking for 5$ up front for something I don't know - yeah it's a scam.
Foreforks@reddit
I fuck with Alexis Ohanian. I think he's a little to late, but I admire the effort. I don't think people want a commercialized platform anymore. He does have some solid values though
