Nvme gen4 on gen3

Hi everyone I was wondering, has anyone ever tested the performance of newer nvme drives compared to previous gen on pcie3 ? Would they be more performant in non sequential situations? Or is the bandwidth also a limiting factor when talking about iops?

PCIe gen barely matters. It comes into focus when you're doing large sequential file transfers and potentially with direct storage. For "general computer use" this isn't an issue. As stated advances in NAND and the controllers used dominate moreso than the interface. If you want to see something similarish, see if you can find a review for cases where an nvme x4 device goes into an x1 slot.

There’s nothing to test. The slot is forwards (and backwards) compatible. You’re simply limited to the max speed that the bandwidth allows for. Does it work? Yes. Is a gen4 drive (in a gen3 slot) faster than a gen3 drive? Depends on the drive.

you should get better iops as that's not really a gen on gen issue but more "the controller on this gen 4 can do better iops" i hope this helps

Like they said, 3.0 and 4.0 matter less than the actual controller used on the ssd. There's no general answer to your question. Head over to the /r/NewMaxx/ sub and read the top stickied post for a solid SSD guide.
