I was literally thinking about Silverchair last week, wondering what happened to them.

daniel johns has decided that ben gillies and chris joannou have taken advantage of his "creativity." he no longer speaks to them or does anything related to silverchair. he makes techno/dance music now. ben and chris just wrote a book about their experience in the band. ben does reality tv shows in australia and is married to a psychic, and i think chris owns a bar. ben has his own music project, i'm not sure if chris still plays.
i listened to a podcast daniel johns did a year or two ago in conjunction with an album release, and i think he was drunk the whole time. it's sad but i guess understandable.
as you may be able to tell i was a huge fan.
MajesticWave@reddit
Chris used to own a pub (called the Edwards) but sold it a couple of years back, Daniel lives in merewether as a recluse but well known to the staff of the bottle shops around here
cerejanebellum@reddit
Is he still drinking? I thought he went to rehab etc...
MajesticWave@reddit
weirdly enough he looks to be turning things around and making new starts in the last 6 months or so - recently demolished his house and is building a new place and selling off the block next door, also is running an Airbnb property with a mate. Also read rumours he may be reforming with the rest of the band….
Secure_Cantaloupe455@reddit
Please tell me he’s not still drinking after the second DUI …🥺
fourofkeys@reddit
do you know what chris does now? he seems to be the most private member of the band.
MajesticWave@reddit
Not sure - I think he lives in Byron bay or up that way
marc3j@reddit
I read the book. As a fan, I thought it was pretty underwhelming...not that interesting. It's a shame they can't work things out. A Silverchair concert would be a bucket list item for me.
fourofkeys@reddit
it definitely felt a little fluffy, but i thought it was alright. i think it was good they wrote it and included their participation in some of the music writing, since daniel is so convinced that all they did was ride his coattails and sometimes it sounds like he doesn't think they even liked playing music. i think their interest in the project and the friendships was believable.
TiEmEnTi@reddit
This is Daniel Johns now

I still remember them opening with Israel’s Son when I saw them at Mississippi Nights
RelevantElection2962@reddit
I was there too! Great show. I miss Mississippi Nights.
KarisPurr@reddit
Remember Across the Night?
Necessary_Range_3261@reddit
It was the moon that stole my slumber
LakeEarth@reddit
Frogstomp, Freakshow, and Neon Ballroom were in my rotation for years. Couldn't get into their stuff after that point though, unfortunately.
pinellas_gal@reddit
Diorama took me a looong time to get into. As in I bought it the year it was released, listened to it once and shelved it for about 6 years. Brought it back out randomly and fell in love with it. Still cannot get into Young Modern though.
Necessary_Range_3261@reddit
Absolutely love Diorama.
Oldpuzzlehead@reddit
I love their anthem for the year 2000.
MissMelines@reddit
Sadly, the youth did not make it hard for them in the year 2000. Also unfortunate that the youth did not take their fascism awayyyyyyyYYy
Brcomic@reddit
Aaaand now it’s stuck in my head even though I have listened to it in over 20 years.
Mtndrums@reddit
That whole record was beastly.
MissMelines@reddit
coming back to say thank you for this post as it took me on a magical ride of nostalgia yesterday that I think I needed. Lord, we really had the best music to grow up to.

The water out of the tap is very
HARD TO DRANK
Very hard to drink
sinisterblogger@reddit
Of the tap out of the sink that doesn’t exist in the bathroom that doesn’t exist. That song makes no sense.
sinisterblogger@reddit
Although I suppose it would be hard to drink water out of a nonexistent sink in a nonexistent bathroom, so…
MissMelines@reddit
the SINK is the BASIN THAT COLLECTS WATER. The ‘tap’ is the faucet the water runs out of….into the sink. They do not absolutely have to exist together, although it’s ideal.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
So then IT DOES MAKE SENSE
MissMelines@reddit
the tap (faucet) and the sink it flows into (basin) are two different items. Way overthinking here.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit
They're singing about the drinking taps at school, like this one.
epidemicsaints@reddit
Maybe the sink came off the wall but the tap remains?
Either way it's a deal breaker for me.
Upset-Word151@reddit

Saw them at Sydney Uni at festival ( if I remember correctly) it must of been just as Frogstomp came out. It was insane but I thought I was too cool for them as I was 17🤣
isosparkle@reddit
Do you feel the same anyway… ?
Antique_Stock@reddit
I saw them perform here in Vancouver years ago. They had a little known band local opening for them named Nickelback
Nacho040506@reddit
Israel’s Son > Tomorrow … there I said it.
VeterinarianQuirky76@reddit
Still have a Silverchair preset on my Pandora.
zenjensan@reddit
I got Frogstomp in a Xmas parcel post.
NikkoTime@reddit
They were a one hit wonder. Obscurity happened to them.
Kreatorkind@reddit
I thought it was impressive that they were 16... until I learned how to play guitar a few months later and then I wasn't so impressed.
But I like the album.
DarthBster@reddit
They made some great music. Too bad they don't get along anymore. I didn't really like Young Modern, but their first four albums still get regular play in my house.
scott743@reddit
The album wasn’t an overall hit, but Straight Lines was a banger that I still play regularly.
DarthBster@reddit
Yeah, that's a good tune. I need to revisit it again and see if I get it. I read that it was HUGE in Australia.
thebarnacleez@reddit
Heck yeah it is
limelight022@reddit
I still remember walking into Circuit City in the early 2000's to return something, and while I was waiting in line I heard a new song from them playing on the TV displays. Walked over to watch the music video (The Greatest View) and loved it. Bought the album right then and there. If you havent listened to Diorama check it out its a great album!!! Across the Night, Luv Your Life, The Greatest View, After all These Years are some absolute bangers.
Daniel Johns has done solo albums which sound nothing like Silverchair. Ben has a drum channel on Youtube, he plays Silverchair songs. Chris is a small business owner.
Ben brought in another guy to sing a while back for a YT video and he sounded great, I was kinda hoping he would continue the band in live shows at least, but nothing ever happened.
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
Oh hey, they were the guys with that one song!
MissMelines@reddit
Holy shit, Frogstomp will now be my Saturday cleaning soundtrack. Maybe I’ll play it on my iPod nano! It’s been awhile.
I fucking loved them. And so many songs are timeless. They were ahead of their time.
RosemaryRoseville@reddit
The bands drummer is married to a psychic
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
I’ll bet he didn’t see that coming.
inactivelywaiting@reddit
Neither did she
Idislikethis_@reddit
Real Housewives of Melbourne is the only housewives show I have ever watched because they were on it.
ScottClam42@reddit
There was a guy on our rugby team in college nicknamed silverchair bc he had the long straight blonde hair. It quickly got shortened to just "chair"
PlagueDrWily@reddit
They were marketed in Canada as a younger, cuter and less-depressed Nirvana - it must have worked because the first two albums were played non-stop here on the radio and Muchmusic. I was indifferent to them but they were a big hit with my younger sister and her friends, so they were inescapable even at home.
mike_b_nimble@reddit
Pure Massacre just came up on my playlist yesterday.
mesosuchus@reddit
Doesn't Google work in your region?
geekdadchris@reddit (OP)
It does. But this was just a random thought while I was driving. Then I see this post from r/music about the band and figured that we Xennials could share a unique perspective, having been there and the band’s inception.
mesosuchus@reddit
Or read the wiki page
Tiny-Reading5982@reddit
Do people not understand reddit? It's to have discussions...
mesosuchus@reddit
No it's to ask questions that could be easily answered with a visit to a wiki page but apparently offloading labor on others is the reddit vibe
RLIwannaquit@reddit
Frogstomp was freaking awesome. Couldn't believe it when I found out they were only like 15 years old
Upset-Word151@reddit
Ahh Silverchair, that angsty sound and crackly voice got to me so hard back in the day
naamingebruik@reddit
A friend of mine really liked them.
I thought they were "too pretty" and figured it was some label's baby. Like a grunge version of take that to appeal to the grunge crowd

I'll tell you what I think, but you'll have to

Last year I went down a YouTube rabbit hole with this band. Found some really cool concert footage from 1999. I remember when Frogstomp came out, like damn they were 15! That’s some talent. I really love Neon Ballroom though. 1999 was a great year for music as a whole honestly.
I really loved Ana’s song and how he opened up about his eating disorder. I thought that was really brave especially because mental health awareness wasn’t really a thing yet back then. He probably helped a lot of teenagers/young adults that were struggling. Does anyone remember if this was on making the video on MTV or am imagining that?
AndroidNumber137@reddit
Vitro's collab with Silverchair for Spawn is one of my favorite songs from that weird-ass movie (and surprisingly good soundtrack).
Phronesis2000@reddit
That soundtrack is nuts. So damn good.
Independent-Yam-1054@reddit
Frogstomp was epic!

phatryuc@reddit
The best….!!!!
pronouncedayayron@reddit
It blows my mind that they made frogstomp at 15 years old. God damn they're talented guys.
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Frogsromped on their face last I heard. And the water was so hard to drink, possibly died of thirst
PollyDarton_me@reddit
Loved them! Still do.
TrustAffectionate966@reddit
I remember hearing "Ana's Song" and realizing I probably had an eating problem stemming from depression.
Tiny-Reading5982@reddit
This song was definitely relatable for a lot of 90s teens...
nofunatallthisguy@reddit
I was moderately fond of them
CreampieForMommie@reddit
They weren’t famous here.
Sodajerkpharmacy@reddit
Frog stomp is good, freak show is best, neon ballroom is great, the other two haven’t been heard

“Shade” and “Suicidal Dream” were my anthems in HS
musicide@reddit
Diorama is a brilliant album. One of my all-time favorites. Daniel’s Aerial Love EP was excellent too — especially considering how incredibly different it is from his previous work.
rgthunder1@reddit
I had their greatest hits CD back in the day and really liked the following songs:
Anthem For The Year 2000 Ana’s Song Cemetery Emotion Sickness Pure Massacre
Difficult_Pool_5608@reddit
I still listen to Silverchair’s first two albums.
electric__fetus@reddit
Take the time to learn to hate. Come and join the mass debate.
One-Earth9294@reddit
Every good thing I have to say about music in the first half of the 90s is undone by the 2nd half of the 90s.
Remember Candlebox? God I fucking hated that era.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
One of my buddies got super into them when they came out. Almost embarrassingly into them. They had some ok songs, but I haven’t really listened to them in 30 years.
kcchiefscooper@reddit
We used Pure Massacre for a project in Mass Comm back in high school. Shit crashing, exploding, and Silverchair. I am pretty sure we got an A on that, one of the few of my school career lol
New_Amomongo@reddit
In 2025, Silverchair will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album, "Frogstomp," with a special panel event in Sydney, Australia, last March 26th. However, Daniel Johns, the band's frontman, did not attend.
