Germany. 0,25€ on cans and plastic bottles (the non-reusable kind), 0,15€ on reusable, 0,08€ on beer bottles.

Since it was introduced, there was an almost instant visible difference. You don's see any bottles or cans lying around on the side of the road anymore. It's been like that for over a decade. Since plastic bags got phased out, that dissapeared also.

Most people put their bottles and cans besides the trash can nowadays, so those can be scooped up without digging through the trash.

Are you able to return them anywhere? I live in Michigan, USA and we had bottle deposits on all carbonated beverages since the 90s. As a kid I loved taking back cans and getting the money, as an adult I hate it and they mostly just go in general recycling. The hassle of taking them back is not worth it. If a store doesn't sell that brand or size bottle, they won't accept it and so you end with cans/bottles from different stores that you have to take back to that specific store for 10 cents.

Generally, yes. Some bottles are not accepted in some supermarkets but that's an exception. Every supermarket has one or more machines that can handle most bottle types.

I'm in Montréal, Qc, Canada, in our province is 10¢ for any bottle, except 750ml and over, where they are at 25¢.

No body put the bottles in the trash here, we have select collect. we have a bucket for the organic matters, recyclable matter, and trash is for almost nothing, and get removed every two weeks, when everything else is every week.

Then it's a valid question, you don't need the money for one fare, you need enough for a subscription or enough tickets to last you until the first paycheck. Is there any convention? Where I am from if you are poor you pay next to nothing for a yearly pass but Europe has better welfare than the US. Is there anyone you could carpool with? Could you cycle to work? No, so maybe I wasn't clear in my description. This is a one way ticket for a long distance bus, I'll be going around 150 miles to a relative, who has work and a temporary small livingspace for me. It's an onsite job, so no commute/ future bus tickets. I was able to get the ticket tho, leaving in a couple hours.

Wal mart has the best camera security in the retail industry and you’re absolutely right about BB employees being at the doors cameras etc. The most important difference between them is that BB has a very strict do not stop touch and will actually fire an employee for it they might fallow you around literally not giving you breathing room but if you hit the doors they’ll just let you go. Donate plasma. Near me a clinic offers first time donators ~$100/donation, 2x/wk, up to $750 for the first mo. Initial draw takes like 4 hours, afterwards ~1.5hr. Some areas have semen clinics but I've never found them. This is legit and honestly can pay for a room for rent ($650/mo near me) by itself. Helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure I believe, but can leave track mark scars with continued donations.
Craigslist/ FB Marketplace resale. Take a nice picture of something you just don't use anymore and list it, the more listings, the faster you'll make a sale. If you have nothing, I have found grills, furniture, and more as curb alerts, apply some elbow grease, cleaning, sanding, painting (local dumps typically have paint dropoffs that are free to take what is left, if you can't afford paint). Don't have transportation? Can usually find a crap used bike for $25-50.
CL/FB gigs/jobs. CL specifically has a local gigs section, furniture mover for the day, need lawn mowed, 1 day sign spinner needed, brand ambassador (setup display booth in warehouse store like Sam's/Costco). FB likely has local hiring now groups you can join and sometimes there are cash daily offers. I have literally stuck 10 mullet per ziploc type bag, 500 bags filled = $50. Took me 6 hours, some people got 2k bags done a day. I quit after 1 day. Also did demo construction, backbreaking manual demo for $10/hr...not ideal but if you need money you will do what you must.
Day labor. Some areas have a place where you show up early enough, they will put you to work. It will be crap work. Traffic flagger if you're lucky, landscaping, decking, construction if you're not.
Begging. I've fortunately never had to do this, but a cardboard sign with anything helps, or some kind of joke/uplifting message and stand at street corners. If you ask 100 people for a dollar, you'll probably be all set. Just strike up a conversation with someone about your need and they might just give you a 20 and ask you to pay it forward. Cash app and venmo type ads also open up possibilities.

I see you have a job lined up, but if you're that desperate for $20 you might want to do one or more of these in conjunction with it. Good luck to anyone that found any use in these.

You need a ID, social security card and proof of an address that’s reasonably close to donate plasma. You gotta answer some questions and watch some videos and then they give a super easy “knowledge test” that’s like 20 questions. A very brief physical and then a vibe check to make sure your veins are good. After that you get sat in a chair and it’s a 1 1/2 hour process normally. You will usually get $75-$100 your first donation ever and then you can donate again 2 days later for usually the same amount again for new donors. After the first month the rates usually go to $50 first donation of the week and $75 second donation of the week. It’s a very easy extra $500 a month plus the plasma is used for good things. You do know homeless people do work full time jobs right? I lived in my car and worked full time for 7/11 months I did this. Now you could use Google maps and use the walking option to estimate the time it would take to walk and then add about 2+ hours on for breaks and rest stops and nott have to assume if you'd get to a new job you obviously can't be gambling on keeping considering you need something to gamble.

If you live near a university or college, stroll through the university, looking for instructors book giveaways outside their door. Then review all the dates and titles and see if any are on the buyback list. Usually the college or university bookstore will buy back books based on certain titles. If the textbook has instructor review on the cover, simply cover it with black marker or match it with the color of a highlighter.

You can also take some of the books to book buyers in town or post on fb marketplace.

If you have more time and patience, you could also use Amazon.

When I forgot to bring my wallet to campus I would ask passerby if they had a dollar or 2 I could borrow for a vending machine. College students may be broke, but we're pretty much all young with some spare change in our pocket that we don't value as much as our credit cards.
