o365 thinks personal microsoft account is owned by Work/University

I've got a weird one here. So my university issues two different email accounts based on what your status is at the university. For example, if you're an employee, you're issued a o365 account with the suffix mail.university.edu. If you're a student, you are issued a information.university.edu. (note: these are dummy names so as to maintain some level of privacy). To get free office 365, I provided MS my student email as I wasn't a university employee yet. This allowed me to create a Microsoft account with the information.university.edu account. All was fine until I forgot my password and needed to reset that password. Now, when trying to reset my password, I get a screen that states "We're sorry You can't reset your own password because password reset isn’t properly set up for your organization.
You must contact your administrator to both reset your password and to check your organization’s setup.
However, this account doesn't have an administrator. It's a personal account. Somehow it got adopted by the university and I can no longer reset the password. The university has no idea what to do. I have a lot of data on the OneDrive account.
Has anyone dealt with this before? The university is saying it's a personal account and thus not their problem, yet it blatantly is
