MSI RTX 5090 GPU thermal throttling issue

I have a Thermaltake tower 600 which has everything plugs up. I love the look and have months of trying I finally got a RTX 5090 GPU.
Results When GPU is vertical with plugs up:
All 3 Gpu fans are 3,100 rpms.
Gpu clock is at 1612 Mhz.
Gpu temperature is 88.8'C
Results when Gpu is horizontal with pc case on side:
All 3 Gpu fans are 1,320 rpms.
Gpu clock is at 2602 Mhz.
Gpu temperature is 77.9'C.
I essentially gain 11' C hotter and lose 1000Mhz on the gpu clock. The 3 fans running at 100% can't cool the gpu below 88.8'C. Is this an issue with insufficient wicking fluid or something?
Jayz Two Cents talks about this:

I am not sure what to do other than use a side stand kit for the tower. Is this an RMA issue? Is there a fix without trying to RMA the gpu?

This is very interesting. I'm researching the same issue. I just deshrouded my 5090 Ventus and put 3 top of the line 120mm case fans on it and my temps still go from 35 at idle to 90 in heavy games, at which point it starts to throttle. The interesting thing is, I also have it vertically mounted in a Sharkoon REV200!

Yeah I have to have it horizontal and the card is fine I just bought horizontal stand for tower 600. I wished I could have the tower vertical. ;(

Man I just tested this 5 mins ago. I turned my REV200 on it's face so the GPU is in a 'normal' orientation, and now I get max 60°C instead of 90°C on the same workload...
I'm kinda pissed about it because I LOVE my REV200, and it makes no sense to keep it in there now. On the other hand, I am SUPER grateful to you for your post, as I was almost about to RMA this thing. After all the trouble and patience I went through to get it, that would have sucked a ton.
Also you're likely wondering why I'm topping out at 60°C; I deshrouded it and put 3 120mm case fans on there. The noise difference at 90°C was HUGE, but unfortunately I don't have a good before/after impression of temps and performance with this "correct" orientation we're trying out right now. I would still highly recommend it. If you're interested, this post has some nice pointers: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1k9sl7s/cooling_and_noise_test_with_samples_msi_ventus/

So Jay's two cents says that there is a lack a of wicking fluid in the metal heat sink pipes. So when vertical all the liquid goes to the end of the heat pipes. So then the liquid isn't getting heated up.
The way to fix this is to get a new cooler for the card. You could try RMA and see if they can add more wicking fluid to cooler...
I have been debating on getting a liquid cooler kit for my msi gaming trio 5090. So need new liquid cooler, radiator, fans, pump, fittings and pipes. Or just use the side stand for 40 bucks. I already paid more because of tariffs and price hikes. There is also still the issue of the card melting at some point due to power connector.
That is cool how you added those new fans. Didn't think that would work well. Hmmm how does the heat blast without the shroud not directing the flow?

Yea I probably won't bother with that, it was way too hard to get my hands on a 5090. I think I'll just get another case where it hangs horizontally, maybe upside down could be cool.
As for the shroud direction, it's kinda like the fans on a radiator, right? They just pump air in there and the air tries to escape any way it can. The path of least resistance is probably out the side. The temps and noise kinda speak for themselves.

This could work. Still would need a radiator, pump, etcetera...

yeeaaa I'm not gonna get into that haha, just ordered the Lian Li O11, maybe I can turn it upside down and keep it on the left side of my desk

Lol I just saw that I mentioned the deshrouding in my first comment already, sorry for repeating myself 😂
