Is it correct to say stood or standing in this sentence?

This has baffled me since I moved to England. I learnt to say "I was standing at the bar..", however i've noticed most English people say "I was stood at the bar..". Similarly, I would say"I was sitting with my mates..", whereas people i've met here say "I was sat with my mates.." It might be a local dialect for SW England, but it bothers me as it sounds wrong to me. What is grammatically correct?

Stood is grammatically incorrect but accepted as a regionalism within the UK. This is the acceptance that some poorly educated people speak English poorly, and the association of poor education with particular regions. It's the bigotry of low expectations in action.

Thanks for commenting on a two year old post, as it continues to baffle me and remains relevant. Poor education is an interesting reason. I've heard the grammatically incorrect usage across the spectrum of education, but I guess it's regionally accepted and old mistakes have altered the dialect.
