$90 for the cartridge that doesn't even have the game on it, just an install code. Absolute joke.

Dude no games will be 90 dollars, plus, nintendo is just talking about what the ps5 already DOES. I had to wait ages for RE4 to download WITH A DISC. People are just bitching at nintendo because they’re increasing prices.

Switch 2 games will be set at $80 for the download, and $90 for the physical cartridge. Nintendo already said this in their announcement.
View on Reddit #53510673

cam312@reddit

I'm genuinely tired of the misinformation about the install code. They just put a name to something that was already happening ON the Switch 1. So really it's on the company whether they choose to put their full game on the cartridge or not. Cyberpunk (64 GB) is fully on the cart! Bravely Default (11 GB) and Street Fighter 6 (50 GB) will not, blame those companies. Here's an example of what people are complaining about the Switch 2's games that's already on the Switch 1: https://preview.redd.it/h12t15v2qcte1.jpeg?width=619&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e176bf248c33ae5bc2f67048cbce537f6f32e0bf

The problem with Nintendo is that there is nothing really like their first party games. Don't know what it is but I reluctantly paid a ridiculous amount for Mario Kart 8 (second hand physical copy and still close to 40 pounds) and still I find myself grinning like an idiot.
View on Reddit #53125190

Darkextrid@reddit

I haven't spent a dime on Nintendo stuff since the wii but, their first party games are top notch (pokemon and 2d Mario aside). They are the only big company that tries to innovate in their games, yeah most of their games are pretty basic/casual but the gameplay loop is extremely fun, even better if you have someone to play with. That being said, I would buy more Nintendo stuff if they weren't such a shit company toward their fans, if the online was at least decent and if they weren't so greedy with the prices, full price for a 4 year old game? Sure buddy, but that's not for me.

View on Reddit #53231154

HecticHero@reddit

So not what little big planet did then? I played little big planet 3, it was actually buggy mess that crashed pretty hard on release. Having a level creator mode where you can put a face on a sponge and make it aggressive is a little different than being able to create stuff on the fly like TOTK allowed.
View on Reddit #53234100

Komijas@reddit

Did you actually play LittleBigPlanet 3? Because you could do these things on the fly on some story mode levels and you were allowed to replicate this freedom of creation on the user generated levels as well.

Played at my friend's house and not the story mode levels. Guess I missed that.
View on Reddit #53320226

Yes that wasn't possible on LittleBigPlanet 2, unfortunately 3 was quite rushed and made by a different team, it was quite the buggy mess. They also didn't introduce the same amount of new features, but one of them was giving limited creating tools in play mode on levels.
View on Reddit #53323989

do the graphics really matter that much though, as long as the game is fun? independent of the system you can get absolute banger games that look like ass and games that look beautiful and play like shit. taking playtime and long term enjoyment into account i feel like 80 bucks for a mario kart that can get you hundreds of hours of fun (if you have friends) is still better value for money than buying the newest aaa singleplayer game that gets you 6-10 hours of fun with high end graphics for 50-60 bucks.

Production cost does not come into the equation when it comes to pricing *if there is no competition*. The point is Nintendo makes games which the vast majority of people find incredibly fun and there is simply no alternative. If someone made an actual fun casual race game, they would need to reevaluate the pricing.

View on Reddit #53127558

CriticalBreakfast@reddit

It's not really that, it's more akin to switching to 144hz from 60hz. The difference in quality of life is great. Doesn't make the previous item outright bad, but the new one is objectively better, undebatable. Same as like, Switching for a clapped out Corolla to a brand new BMW i8. Yeah both drive you from point A to B, but the i8 has every possible bell and whistle out there to make that driving experience more enjoyable.
View on Reddit #53271363

FishTure@reddit

144hz only matters if you can maintain that frame rate, and is a negligible improvement imo. Driving a new Beemer would be nice, but if you just drive 20 minutes to work each day, is it really worth the investment? Will the brand new iPhone be faster and have a better camera? Yeah but your current phone is probably fine. Are OLEDs nicer? Of course. Does it matter when you are playing a game? Not really imo. If you are like a color grader in the film industry, sure, get the nicest screen you can. But these things really don’t matter that much. Games were fun on CRTs, driving is primarily about necessity, my 6 year old phone still works great and taking photos is about creativity not megapixels. I stand by what I said and my anti-consumerist stance. These are luxury items, even an old/inferior luxury is still a luxury.

450 beans is fine. People crying about OLED, go find a comparable 8 inch OLED tablet screen. OLED Steam Deck is the closest but at 550, only at 90hz and slightly smaller screen size. People will complain regardless if Switch 2 OLED was the base model at 550.

If the console was actually $450, I wouldn’t have that much of a problem with it. The problem is that if you buy the Japanese only version in Japan it only costs $330, but the multilingual version costs $450 (even in Japan). It’s just greed.

I don’t think OLED is readily available like LCD is. I think it’s like chips, where you have to plan your capacity years in advance. Only 2 people make OLED, Samsung and LG. Everyone wants OLED so it’s expensive Add another $100 to the price for it. If you thought people were complaining a lot now…

View on Reddit #53203968

FactoryOfShit@reddit

LCD is/was often cheaper, and, more importantly for someone like Valve, more available as stock parts, although this is changing. They kind of gambled with the Deck, and wanted to make something that is as cheap as possible while still being good. Since OLED displays don't really offer any quality advantage beyond true blacks (the importance of which varies massively depending on the game, most games don't have many pitch dark scenes), they chose to reduce costs and simplify supply. Once the Deck took off (and once the suppliers returned to normal operation after COVID) - they pretty much entirely switched to OLED. They don't build new LCD units anymore.
View on Reddit #53104463

Alanuelo230@reddit

Not true. Due to logic on whitch OLED works, you have realy low latency, while on LED... it varies. But steam deck used IPS, where latency is most of the time good, thats why most gaming displays are using it, instead of VA. But it has downsides, like contrast, and backlight bleed. Colorspace is also a concern, I'm sure steam deck display have 100% SRGB coverage, but I might be wrong. OLED is preffered for HDR, because it's eazier to have wider color coverage than on IPS, with better color accuracy. How important it is on 7 inch display is whole other thing :D
View on Reddit #53108209

FactoryOfShit@reddit

Lower contrast, backlight bleed, difficult-to-implement HDR are all the exact same thing caused by the fact that there's a backlight that limits how dark you can go. I just called it "deeper blacks" because it's the outcome that the user sees. Limited colorspace is a real thing I didn't mention, but we're talking portable gaming here - all modern games are designed for sRGB (or, more commonly, not colormatched at all), since it would be unreasonable to expect most gamers to have professional-grade monitors with wider colorspace :)
View on Reddit #53108543

DirtyPoul@reddit

HDR is not limited by how dark the backlight can go. It's limited by the difference in brightness between different areas of the screen. It is limited by the fact that it has a backlight compared to OLED where individual pixels light up independently.
View on Reddit #53153425

FactoryOfShit@reddit

Assuming backlight brightness doesn't change, it's limited by how dark you can go. Everything I said was correct. Naturally, you cannot just change the backlight brightness, as this affects the entire screen, as you said.
View on Reddit #53155134

DirtyPoul@reddit

That is one factor, but it's not the most important factor. For HDR, how dark the pixels are doesn't matter in isolation. What matters is how bright one pixel is compared to another one shown on the screen simultaneously. That has nothing to do with how dark or bright the backlight goes, but depends on how you can control the brightness of different areas of the screen, either through local dimming of the backlight or using technologies that don't depend on backlight, like OLED. I'm sure you know all this. I just wanted to add it to the thread.

Availability can be a big one. LCD's are readily available in a wide variety of sizes. OLED, less so. Generally speaking, Nintendo will want to source a good LCD display over charging a display manufacturer with the task of creating a new one that fits the system. Additionally, the display is 120Hz, HDR capable, supports VRR and targets 1080p. While OLEDs exist that do these things, they're primarily in the larger display market, and 1080p is a pretty uncommon resolution as well at that screen size just due to the current manufacturing demands for much higher resolution mobile displays. People will compare this to Valve's OLED offering, but even then I'm fairly certain they reached out to Samsung Display to supply that, and that was only after they had proven success with the previous model. As it stands, the Switch and Deck are priced quite similarly, and offer pretty comparable hardware just in different ecosystems. There's lots of reasons to get upset with Nintendo, but I think the display isn't really one of them. I'm not sure what the brightness target of the display is either, but it's a lot easier to make bright LCD panels than it is OLED without decreasing the overall lifespan of the device.

I assume cost and availability of materials. The big difference here is that you can buy a screen and install it yourself. You can basically buy and replace any part of the deck. Or send it in and have someone repair it for you. My first switch burned out the screen after 3 months and they basically told me tough shit. Just shy of 2 years with the deck and the battery shit the bed and they replaced the whole unit with an OLED one free of charge.

Mostly pricing video games like Mario Kart World at $80 (for the digital, $90 on physical). Nintendo famously sold their first-party games at $60 and absolutely refused to discount them later like other studies do. Then they made Tears of the Kingdom $70, which was a major release and exceptional case, it was logically thought this wouldn't apply to most games. Now Nintendo jumped straight from $60 to $80-$90. Combined with Nintendo's other recent practices, e can also deduce they will not drop the price and games will still cost that much in several years' time. It's a considerable jump in price, and it's also making Switch 2 games unaffordable for many people who could previously afford Nintendo games.
View on Reddit #53165603

RaoulLaila@reddit

No, I am fully understanding against the price of games. I just don't get why people are so upset about the console. The 90 dollars tag is absolute batshit crazy, but what does the console itself have to do with it, based on whatever this post is trying to say. From what I read, its the LCD screen, but yeah, bs reason
View on Reddit #53166365

GalaXion24@reddit

The console is also more expensive and at 450 you still don't have a single game to play + online is paid too. Don't get me wrong it's pretty much industry standard at this point, but it still sucks, and once people latch on to one issue (game prices) they have a very low bar for attacking everything else too.
View on Reddit #53216195

ZQ04@reddit

The console is expensive for what it is -- you can get a PS5 for the same price. The games are absurdly expensive. An OLED screen would just be nice to have for the price that people pay for the thing. It's 2025, they're not super expensive to manufacture and LCDs are starting to become outdated.

True, I haven’t gamed in a while so the PS5 seemed like the logical console to compare it to. Now that I think about it, the pricing is not too bad. Games, on the other hand, are terribly priced and I hope they don’t set a trend of becoming more expensive.
View on Reddit #53121833

RaoulLaila@reddit

Okay, and? The PS5 is almost 5 years old now and the 500 dollar tag is with a game bundle (plus the fact that the console's power seems to be about stronger than PS4 pro, at least it seems like it, at minimum its stronger than PS4 and steam deck and for a handheld that has the same width from its predecessor, thats INSANE), the LCD screen still looks great regardless, I honestly do not understand the obsession behind OLED (yes, I admit it looks great but the screen is hella massive and looks gorgeous still, has HDR, and it affects battery life much less), etc. You have 1 console that has so many features, all those things I could ask for, a simple, much better Switch with much more power, comfortable controllers, great visuals, yet people are screaming because "MUH OLED!!", mfs will never be happy and honestly if it DID have OLED the price would most likely be higher and people would complain about its price and another detail to nitpick about. Only thing I do agree however is that the game pricing sucks
View on Reddit #53119587

ZQ04@reddit

The screen isn't necessarily bad, it's just that an OLED would be so much better. Especially for people who have OLED phones, monitors, and TVs. Is it a need -- no, but it would be great to have especially when you're paying so much. However you do make a good point that it would be more expensive, people are already complaining about price. Honestly I've seen 2 types of people, those who really care about screen quality and OLED is the standard for them (this includes me), and people who just don't care as long as the screen looks good. Can't hate on anyone for being in either camp, but that's pretty much why people are upset.
View on Reddit #53119873

RaoulLaila@reddit

I disagree that the console price is too high, for those that complain. Only the game prices are something to boycott to purchase. I was expecting 400-450, but 470 is honestly a nice sweet spot after the hardware turned out to be WAY stronger than I expected. I mean, 4k? On a Nintendo console? Shut up LOL wow I think to myself. I will order the bundle (which means I get Mario kart for only 30-40 extra) and after that I will refuse to buy any full price games, I will merely play Mario Kart, the enhanced free patches and the free patches that come with NSO, such as BOTW.

Because Nintendo made enough bad choices that people will exaggerate everything and spread misinformation just to get extra hate towards Nintendo. The PS5 and Xbox don’t come with an OLED screen, but just like Switch 2 and PC, are capable of using a tv/monitor that is OLED. $450 for a handheld/console hybrid capable of 120fps and 4K dock output is not bad. The idea is that they knew tariffs were coming so they baked that into the price initially so they didn't have to raise it later. The Switch 2 has higher ram, a bigger screen, more storage, higher resolution, seemingly more complex technology with the joycons, and is being released after an era of high inflation. I don’t think it should be all that surprising that it costs more than an OLED Switch.
View on Reddit #53108217

PixelatedAbyss@reddit

No no, I'm not saying it shouldn't cost more than an OLED switch. I think $450 is fine. I'm saying I don't agree that they needed to downgrade the display to achieve those upgrades. $100 extra per unit for more RAM, a better CPU and GPU, and upgrading the joycons is enough when manufacturing at scale. The joycons dropped their IR sensor for the mouse and added some magnets and a button. That isn't complex technology. And upgrading the components isn't that much either. I'm sorry but $100 should've been more than enough, when the original $350 covered everything else.

The only reason they did it was to release a fancy OLED model later, and everyone who says otherwise is simply in denial. My point is, the LCD is good, be we could've had better. And at $450 I would expect better.

Well yeah of course. An LCD switch 1 was fine, it was more of a focus on getting a viable portable console working. But now we have an OLED to compare against. Releasing an OLED variant of the switch 1 was an upgrade for those who wanted it. Releasing an OLED variant of the switch 2 after downgrading it from what we had is a cash grab.
View on Reddit #53144632

Sarin10@reddit

but you don't know that. you have ZERO clue how much profit Nintendo is making, how much their unit cost is, the profit differential between the Switch 1 and 2, etc. FYI the Switch 1's MSRP adjusted for inflation is ~$400. So it's really just a $50 real price increase.
View on Reddit #53123160

PixelatedAbyss@reddit

As I pointed out in my original comment with an edit, Nintendo has managed to like with almost every console generation, upgrade the performance and add additional features when moving from the GameCube to the Wii, also accounting for inflation, for as little as under $25 price increase per unit. We can use historical data to have a pretty good guess what their margins are, even without exact figures. The original switch unit price was resrsched to be close to $257. It sold for $299, meaning a profit of $42 or 14.05%. https://venturebeat.com/games/teardown-reveals-nintendo-switch-costs-257-to-build/ The OLED switch apparently only had $10 of upgrades yet sold for $350, an additional profit of $40, or a margin 23.71%. https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2021/07/15/the-nintendo-switch-oled-estimated-to-cost-only-10-more-per-unit-to-make/ Again, inflation does not justify the price. For $10 for the original OLED, they would've been able to add it in, even for double this cost and still profited. Stop defending, the giant company.

My partner, who fixes this kind of shit for her job, told me the LCD is assuredly cheaper but the main reason why is so they can come out with Switch 2 V2 eventually with an OLED and sell it to you again. They need things to upgrade to justify selling you a new one.
View on Reddit #53105375

Thewonderboy94@reddit

I think the main consideration being left out here is that Nintendo is producing a bunch of new consoles that will be ready for release, and according to rumors they have like 3x more Switch 2s available for release than Switch 1, to avoid scalping issues and meet demand. LCDs are probably easier to source and secure for that amount of units for cheap. And that's still all a cost they are taking on themselves until the units have been sold.

Idk if the screen is at fault. Also, it's $550, not $600. If you are gonna mention the $90 dock, you might as well say the actual price. Think of it as a $550 more portable laptop.

Marxism-Alcoholism17@reddit

If you think an OLED screen device will cost the same as a LCD device you know nothing about electronics.
View on Reddit #53102823

PixelatedAbyss@reddit

Their point isn't that the two would cost the same. It's that an OLED screen is not a super high end thing, and should be the norm in 2025 for a new game console. Especially for one at this price point. Doubly so for games that cost this much. The OLED switch at launch was $350 if I recall. The Switch 2 is $450. So why can't it have an OLED screen?
View on Reddit #53103115

Marxism-Alcoholism17@reddit

Because the Switch 2 is one of the most high end portable gaming devices on the market that performs at the level of a PS4 Pro, that’s insane for the price point. The Steam Deck is a generation behind and costs more. And the OLED Steam Deck costs $100 more. So basically, the whole sub needs to learn how to use Google.
View on Reddit #53103291

SoupaMayo@reddit

I don't know where you've seen that the switch 2 is better than the Steam Deck, and even weirder how you can say "the switch 2 is on par with a PS4 so it's better than the SD" when a SD destroys the PS4. it's like saying you're faster than my grandma so you could beat Usain Bolt

View on Reddit #53103759

SoupaMayo@reddit

*And [SD] can run 0 Switch 2 games.* No shit Sherlock, how could the steam deck run any games that aren't released yet you absolute dimwit I swear you Nintendo cock suckers will make up the most stupid thing to ride Furukawa joycon smh
View on Reddit #53108218

PixelatedAbyss@reddit

The switch was always good for playing switch games, it's why I own one. Playing switch games on a switch is obviously better. But the switch 1 is still famously underpowered. There's plenty of games that weren't specifically designed for the switch that run better on Steam deck. I don't agree with the previous commenters point that you can just run switch games on a steam deck because it would obviously be worse, but the steam deck is still a better investment over a switch 2 unless the price comes down.
View on Reddit #53105148

PixelatedAbyss@reddit

Now you're just making shit up. Use Google yourself. We don't actually know yet what the processing power of the Switch 2 is. Why? Because Nintendo won't tell us. But so far the current rumours speak to something like 1.1GHz handheld and 0.99GHz docked with 8 cores. The PS4 Pro being a stationary console means it's just gonna be more powerful regardless, but to compare it uses an 8-core CPU at 1.6GHz and a 4.2 TFLOP GPU. Most sources say the Switch 2 can manage about 90% the PS4 Pros power. https://www.xda-developers.com/not-only-nvidia-nintendo-switch-2-processor-leaks-massive-upgrade/ The Steam deck uses a 4 core 2.4-3.5GHz CPU, so it's comparable, saying it's a generation behind is disingenuous, it was released ages ago. Yet it still competes with the Switch 2 easily. The OLED Steam dock does cost $100 more. But the games cost anywhere between 50%-90% less. So that $100 you spend on the OLED Steam deck is recouped pretty damn fast when for that I could arguably get 3-5 good games for that much on Steam, but only 1.25 Switch 2 ones. Look I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy. I have 3 GameCubes, 3 Wiis, a Wii U and an OLED switch. I don't even own a Steam deck. Not yet. But why are you defending what is shitty pricing? And it is, that's why they didn't put it in the direct itself, they know it.
View on Reddit #53104495

SoupaMayo@reddit

Don't forget that most people don't even have to pay anything more than the Steam Deck to play any games, most people buying it already have a full steam library, plus you can easily emulate whatever you want
View on Reddit #53107967

PixelatedAbyss@reddit

Also valid. Having the freedom to do what I want, and I can also mod and use the workshop? It's a no brainer. I love switch games, but there has to be something to make a switch reasonable to me. The switch wasn't too expensive and I liked used it on the go, and using my PC at home. Now I'm just gonna get a steam deck because the cost benefit has disappeared.

Anytime I have to use a mouse cursor to manipulate a launcher it becomes a pain in the ass to push the Xbox button down + use the controll stick to half ass a mouse. Add to that, I have to manually set docked resolutions in games on a per game basis, it can just be a hassle. All that said, I still love my deck, by far the best tech purchase I’ve made in my life.
