Accidentally came home with a security tag on some clothes. How do I remove the tag without damaging the clothes?

googling this to find an answer..bought my shirt at a store last 2 weeks, and wore it today, and realised the magnetic tag was still on the shirt. but felt weird coz i went out the store and along with others, the store alarm didnt go off. so this morning i had to change my whole outfit, and need to find out how to get the thing off.

Best way to hacksaw the bit on the outside (the bigger bit where the pin goes into) and then get a pair of pliers and twist the bit you sawed

I was just now able to do it with a Phillips head screwdriver and just jamming it. Worked in two shoved by bending the needle, I’m so hype lol I am so socially inept and did not want to go back to target and talk to people, that’s why I did self checkout!!

“Accidentally” ;)

We ordered something online that got delivered with one on it lol. That’s why we are here searching for the same answer.

I bought a belt today and when I came home I realized the magnet tag was still on, but I was to lazy to return to the store and just cut it...
Brilliant_Case4930@reddit
Yeah. They do that a lot actually.

To all those saying she stole it - sometimes the shop effs up, you cannot take it back. This August I travelled to Scotland and bought a lovely tartan skirt (very expensive, too) at a shop run by a lovely elderly lady. She apparently forgot the skirt had 2 magnetic tags. The first time I tried it on at home it was too hot for a full wool skirt, so I ripped the paper tag off and put it back in my closet. Last week while cleaning my closet the discovery of the magnetic tag made me so upset I almost cried (social anxiety galore), since my home is (unfortunately) not in Scotland and clearly, I could not "take it back", not could I, since having a receipt for something I bought in August isn't feasible. Thankfully my mom told me to try pliers and pull up the tag. It worked!

I bought some pyjamas for my sister for Christmas, and now I'm wrapping them I've noticed the tag. I bought them months ago, so definitely do not have the receipt anymore 🤦🏻♀️
Lenda_Catlance@reddit
Wait, the same thing just happened to me today lmaooo
dickbob124@reddit
A magnet is an answer, but unless you've got a 200kg pull magnet just laying around, you're probably going to be spending the hats value just to get one. If you have proof of purchase go back to the shop.
thepentahook@reddit
Wait do normal people not just have one of those lying around?!?
ferdinandsalzberg@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I've tried a couple of shit magnets and they unsurprisingly didn't work.
Thanks for letting me know the spec needed, I'll stop trying stupid things now.

Hard drive magnets work
heartyu@reddit
Do you have the receipt? You should be able to take it to your local supermarket if so and they'll attempt to take it off with their magnets x
bogyoofficial@reddit
Do you get your groceries delivered?
Sometimes we get an item with the tag still on and the driver will take it back to the van to get it off. Maybe you could ask nicely?
ferdinandsalzberg@reddit (OP)
This is a good idea, we do get stuff delivered quite often.
I'm actually not sure which shop my partner got these from. I'm assuming she did actually pay but maybe I should interrogate her further.
ClassicPart@reddit
Going back to the shop and asking them to remove it would be a good idea.
You have the receipt, yeah?
ferdinandsalzberg@reddit (OP)
I didn't buy it myself, and I'm normally shit with receipts, but my partner's filing system is even more abysmal than mine.

OP marked this as the best answer, given by /u/monkeyfant.
^(What is this?)
monkeyfant@reddit
It doesn't look like a paint explosive one so just get some cutters and cut that limp off the front. Then the pin just drops out
ferdinandsalzberg@reddit (OP)
!answer - thanks, it was the paint I was worried about.
Oddly enough this isn't stolen but I don't think we have the receipt to hand, otherwise going back and asking would be fine.

quoole@reddit
Easiest way, assuming you have the receipt, is just to go back to the shop and ask them to take it off.
Alternatively, there are ways of using strong magnets to get it to disengage
TRUEpiiiicness@reddit
By paying

Give it to your kids and tell them to be careful and break it. Wait 5 minutes. Job done :)
Or a magnet.
Round_Caregiver2380@reddit
Crush with pliers to get inside then snap off the clip holding the pin
Matt9885@reddit
Cut the lump off, and jab a knife in the mechanism that holds the pin, it'll come out
ben_jamin_h@reddit
A strong magnet on the knob sticking out the back of the plate will release the pin.
perishingtardis@reddit
A rubber mallet to just smash it off.
Pitiful-Amphibian395@reddit
Take the receipt to the shop and ask.
DannyCookeVids@reddit
Strong magnet or a decent pair of sidecutters..
LukasKhan_UK@reddit
Go back to the shop and ask them to do it.
