What gifts do car guys actually want?

Posted by TimAllensLeftNut@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 407 comments

I want to get my boyfriend something meaningful that he will actually use/appreciate. Car guys are hard to shop for, and parts are expensive lol.

Something he can open and immediately put on their car. Something silly, that will make them chuckle or think of you when they see it. Maybe a hot wheels of their car. Or some silly air freshener tree that has a name of the scent that relates to your relationship in some way. Interesting valve stem caps, or a sticker they can put in their window. Or maybe a little part, like wiper blades that they haven't gotten around to replacing yet. If they work on their car a lot, a box of rubber gloves and some bandaids.

You can't know what you haven't learned yet! 10mm sockets are infamous for getting lost in the shop etc, because they are among the most common size sockets. So if you buy a car guy a kit of 10mm sockets/adapters, you're saying to him "got you covered with your missing 10mms"

Almost 100% agree with this. The multiple style 10mm sockets someone else posted is one of the rare example of a useful gag gift that works. Aside from something like that, no, I’m picky and want to research and buy my own stuff. I definitely don’t want to feel obligated to put something like a license plate frame on my car just because someone gifted it to me.

A car care kit like cleaning products (interior or exterior) , or figure out what oil brand he uses and order an oil change kit (oil, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter) for the parts you\`d need the VIN number, usually stamped on the drivers side on the windshield or on the pink slip/brief (it's a 17 character alphanumeric code). Hope this helps.

Flowers and a steak dinner. Like most men to be honest. If you want they do those like “race track experiences” 100ish in ur local currency, they teach you how to race n stuff put you in a fully set up car they’re very cool but depends if you have the money for it. And if he has raced before if he tracks his car it’s probably not a good idea. Don’t get tools n stuff they’re all work my beloved work, but work none the less. Ye flowers n steak dinner, Chances are an excuse to be with you and do something nice is what he actually wants… unless he’s a dickhead and a bad bf in which case idk can’t relate.
View on Reddit #53209513

I mean first of all it doesn't always have to be car related. But if my husband and I hift each otherycar related stuff it can go from like a little toy model of the car or merch from the brand to more helpful shit like tools (amazing in this situation bc we bith csn use it lol) or fucken wiring diagrams lol If it has to be car themed there's many things. Tools or parts might be hard to buy but theres also accessories for the car and accessories in general like a toy model of the car or shit like that

You really should ask him and gove him a budget you are will to spend. There is stuff I want that my wife would never think of like a induction heater for heating up stuck bolts.
View on Reddit #53134852

AnotherIronicPenguin@reddit

Well, ask him. Generally I'd say avoid any sort of accessories, tools, or parts. If he needs/wants any of that stuff he'll have something specific in mind. Detailing supplies are usually pretty good. If you can find a model, RC car, or even a Hot Wheels of his car/truck/dream car that's pretty good. Car related T-shirts from somewhere like Blipshift or Tryhard Ink. If you're willing to do some digging, figure out the specific car culture he's into. Some brands have little inside jokes or cultural things that are fun, like if he's into VWs, buy him a Fast from eBay (it's like a little demon rabbit toy), if he's into Jeeps, get him a rubber ducky, if he drives a Mustang, get him a fleshlight. Then there's the experience sort of gift... A trip to a racing event (even one of the cheap, local races, doesn't have to be $1000/ticket F1), a night at the street legal drags, rally school like Dirtfish, or one of those "Drive a supercar for $300" things could be good.

+ A toy car/ t-shirt/ anything with the shape or image of a car he likes. + A bit more complex ones could be detailing products he uses + A tool you know he needs or could be helpful like those head mounted torches or magnetic tools/ trays. The catch in this category is avoiding to buy something he already has.

Designer-Progress311@reddit

If you're on a budget, and want to buy a tool, a precision measuring tool called a dial caliper is good suggestion. This is a good one. $70 ish ( INSIZE 1108-150 Electronic Caliper, 0" - 6") Look thru his stuff to see if he has one, its a distinctive tool. For fun - If you're in a big city, and he doesn't track (race) or auto cross his car, get a $200 + plus gift certificate at the best outdoor go kart track in town. Do your home work, you want the fast karts, not kiddie karts. The track will most likely host real kart races, that's the clue your looking for. For the uniniated, fast karts are amazing. Research Dallas Karting Complex to get an idea of what I'm suggesting.

I am happy to work on my car, but I have NO desire to freaking wash/polish/wax, etc. That takes all day and then you will have almost always missed some wax spots. Then when it's time for the interior, I'm just so over it and do a crappy job. I would love it if someone were to do an OCD-level detail on my car.
View on Reddit #52924094

schleepercell@reddit

For me its the wheels. I've tried so hard so many times, all different methods. Even powered washed them when I had them off for a brake job. I paid a detail shop to clean a car before taking the pictures to list it for sale and I told them I really wanted the wheels clean and they looked so much nicer than anything I had done before. I don't mind waxing and I can usually get it better looking than the detailers I've paid to do it, but yeah the interior. They know things and have different solvents and brushes and stuff and it comes out looking so nice.

It takes a special kind of person to fully detail an entire car without running of mental energy. I am not that person. I also don't have the fancy cleaning tools and supplies that it takes to do a good job. I know folks who care a lot will never use an automatic car wash, but I use the HELL out of them. I'm not taking a 13 year old Camaro to Concours d'Elegance.

I know the feeling, its easier for me to swing a hammer at a ratchet hanging off a stuck bolt, and then put all the parts back together and then the work is clearly over. Vs the patience to do some task repeatedly and getting into every nook and cranny of the interior, like scrubbing a toothbrush between the lines in a weather tech floor mat. I guess thats why i don't mind waxing my cars because there is a clear path from starting to finishing. It is also satisfying when you get to the end of the polishing because you're almost done and the more you do it, the more it feels smooth like glass.

Good call. I would also recommend getting a high-end version of some tool(s) he uses often. Knipex, PB Swiss, Snap-On, etc. Many guys (myself included!) would feel guilty spending our own money on “the best” when the cheaper options get the job done, but would LOVE to have them.

Serious answer = some kind of car experience. Track time, attend a show or rally for like minded enthusiasts, an overnight stay with twisty, light traffic roads to get there (ask some motorcyclists), an exotic or Nascar driving experience. A model he can build or a diecast of his car would be cool. Custom floor mats (try Lloyds) might be the only accessory I would want that I didn't choose myself or specifically request. Good luck, you seem like a great girlfriend!

She said her BF is a car guy, but that has a wide spectrum. I am a car guy, but I am only that not because I owned performance cars, but because I wrenched on my own cars out of financial necessity (during college and grad school), and not it has gotten to the point where I just can't justify paying someone the hourly rate to come up with the diagnosis that I already figured out, and then pay them again for two hours labor when I can probably nock it off in four in my driveway. For someone like me, harbor freight gift card would be awesome, but I would have no need for a summit racing GC. I did finally get my nice car, a 2019 Mustabg GT 6spd with every option, and 5 years later, it still feels brand new to me, but I still have no need for summit racing GC as I like keeping my mustang factory and I don't plan on any upgrades. That being said, I have also run into people who are introduced to me by mutual acquaintance as, "car giy", but they don't know the difference between a screwdrivers and a hammer and they are, "car giyd" in that they drive their brand new challenger, M4, Miata, etc... and they take it to dealer for work, or if they upgrade they take it to a shop. These kinds of car guys are fine by me, but if you got them Harbor Freight GC, they will probably buy a bunch of zipties, tarps, garden hose... I second the person who said for a car guy, never buy them car related stuff, unless you actually know what they like (or like to do).

I’m a builder. Have been for 22yrs. One of the most meaningful gifts I ever received were candid photos, of me either deep in thought trying to math, talking with a client, doing something menial such as mopping the shop, or expressions after an aha moment and having a 2,500hp engine make 2,700 from a tuning adjustment. I had no idea she had been snapping photos of me for about 5 months. She put a little book together with descriptions of “what dad did today”, that I will be able to share with my grandkids someday. I cried like a baby when her and my daughters gave it to me. I love my work as much as I love my family. It’s what provides for them. It’s like looking at the fruit of your labor from the outside in. TRUE Car guys will get it.

Car guys are often very particular about which accessories are added or modded. They may appreciate a new tool because they don’t have to use it all the time. I personally think the safest bet is weathertech fitted floor liners and cargo liners. Make sure he doesn’t already have any or any customized floor coverings. You’ll need the year, make, and model of the car; occasionally they’ll need to know if it has a particular accessory (like a subwoofer) because that changes the fit, but not too often.

This might sound strange, but I bought a car sized fire extinguisher for my mom back when. She left the oil cap off and her car caught on fire, she saved her car because of MY GIFT. Not kidding. -------- Something he doesn't have: Care care things like a polisher, polish/wax/detailer, tools that he needs but doesn't have (just make sure it's a commonly used thing not a once in 5 years thing). Car wash stuff. Harbor freight has a stainless polishing kit for about $20ish and if he has stainless steel trim, it can make it look awesome. Gift card for some car place that isn't overly priced. There's buckets you can buy that have a bunch of brushes, cleaners, polishers, etc... If there's something wrong with the car, you can get a kit to fix it. I star/crack in the windshield, they have a $15 kit for that. Glass polishing kit. Headlight polishing kit. Wheel dressing/cleaner. Dash cover with his/yours names. I know my wife gives absolutely zero shits about anything car related and I know she's faking when she's pretending to be interested in whatever I'm babbling about but it doesn't matter, it makes me happy to be able to just geek out about my hobby and have my beautiful wife looking at me while I do it. Is he the kind of guy that would put up a painting or photos of a car in his house? Does he have a man cave where that might be something he'd like? If he has a specific type of car he's into, there's some folks online who do some really cool paintings of cars of all different kinds. You could probably find someone who is selling something like that or who would do a custom piece for the right price. There's also probably some kind of memorabilia related to his favorite car if he's into decorating with that kind of stuff. If he's the kind of guy with a nice car that he likes to show off or take to car shows, he might like a photoshoot with his car. The reality is, we can throw out a bunch of suggestions, but you know him and we don't. You're going to have a much better idea of what he might like.

My wife gets me summit racing gift cards. Or sometimes gets me tickets to car shows. Not 100% sure if she's just making me happy but says she looks forward to when my car is done and I start racing again. It's costly and time consuming but is something I love and my x took that away. Another thing is if I have time to just get some work done she leaves me alone to actually work and will usually bring me a snack/drink. Any of those can be cheap and super valuable

My gift giving/receiving mindset is this: \- something that you would want to have but wouldn't spend money on \- something that will last a long time \- an upgraded version of something that you have and use regularily. \- something that compliments something that they like Examples: \- Our family camps, my wife got me a very nice axe for chopping wood. Like a $300+ dollar axe. Beautiful piece of work and will be handed down to my kids. necessary? aboslutely not, I would never buy it, but glad I have it. On that note: \- Nice tools, my wife hates buying them cause she says they aren't fun but seriously get me a real nice tool that will last a long time and gets common use and I'm in. I'm not a car guy but I can imagine there are things that he might have cheap versions of that you could get him a nice upgraded version of. Things that are currently working but not working great, something he complains about but can't afford to replace. On something like this there can be a slow burn on the enjoyment. Maybe you get something and he thinks I already have one, but after using it repeatedly he sees how much better it is, how much time it saves ect. He'll be thinking about you while he's thinking about that. \- Things that don't get alot of use but when you need them you want something nice. I'm a tradesman but my wife has gotten me some nice stuff for the 1-2 times a year when I need to wear a suit. Tie-clips, cufflinks, pocket watch. Don't get much use but always a conversation starter or get compliments. \- I like mixing a drink called an "old fashioned" my wife got me a little smoker for it, now I can make a smoked old fashioned or any other smoked drink. Its a nice touch.

For gifts, it is fun to get something that is a bit of a luxury. Depending on your budget, I would look into high-end tools that are fairly universal. Snap-on is a good brand to look at. If you have the cash, I would get him a [Snap on 3/8" Drive Dual 80® Technology Long Handle Flex-Head Ratchet](https://shop.snapon.com/product/Dual-80-Technology%2C-Chrome-(3-8%22)/3-8%22-Drive-Dual-80-Technology-Long-Handle-Flex-Head-Ratchet/FLF80A). This will last him the rest of his life. If you get married, he will tell people in 50 years that he married you because you bought him that ratchet. If you break up, he will still think about you every time he uses it and it will be passed down to the ungrateful grandkids that use it as a hammer.

Oh, then you just need to offer to pay off his Snap-on account! (Just kidding) This may not be the best product if he already has a lot of Snap-on stuff as he probably has the equivalent. Snap-on sells a lot of ratchets. (I was kind of guessing he may have cheaper tools.) There is still probably something from Snap-on that he would love, it just hard to guess what that would be without knowing what he already has and the kind of work he does. There may be gaps in what he owns that a larger or smaller size would fill. Snap on has a "New Products" list but it does not look very exciting: [https://shop.snapon.com/categories/New-Products/500000](https://shop.snapon.com/categories/New-Products/500000) Another thing to consider is a power tool that work with whatever battery system he is using.

Most of the time it's either something I'd never put on my car or something that I would have used like a month ago but my plans changed and that part no longer fits into the equation. My best advice is either a gift card or tools. You can never have too many tools

Lots of guys don't want gifts. If I want it, I'll buy it. Gift cards are annoying.

Go to a car show with him and let him geek out and just spew out all the car knowledge he has and drool over the nice cars. Ask him questions about this make, that model, which engine, how is that different from others, what makes this car special, etc. And please give your own opinions to engage in conversation! Say "you do or don't like that paint color, those wheels look great or hideous on that car, that interior is timeless and unique but clashes with the paint/theme of the car, I personally don't like what they did with this car but because it was so well done and the attention to detail is so great that you can appreciate the time and effort the owner put into the car. This car looks better in motion at speed than sitting in a parking lot." Form your own taste and bounce it off your car guy. MOST car guys don't care about others opinions of their ride and like debating what looks best on others, so playfully argue about what you like and playfully argue with him for his likes and taste and compare similar cars. Do you really care and are you willing to fight tooth and nail about why you think your opinion is best? Probably not. So keep it fun and just show interest. Talk to some of the car owners about their car and it's history, what they've done to it, and get your car guy involved in the conversation. Be the social lubricant. Take mental notes about what he likes. You don't have to even care about cars, just have to care about him and feign the smallest amount of interest in cars. Just being listened to in a situation where non-stop car talk is almost a requirement and we can get it out of our systems is all that matters :)

A girlfriend I had 25 years ago got me a Craftsman oil filter wrench that tightens around the filter when you go to remove it. It's one of my favorite and most useful tools to this day. Something similar to [this](https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-Automotive-3-Jaw-Oil-Filter-Wrench/1003096238).

Ask him what he wants. or ask him to send you are few things from his list that is within your price range. Because car parts are so expensive, I usually decline anything that someone wants to get me. Mostly because I know its an expensive hobby, and I am more than likely not going to wait till a holiday for someone to gift me something I can get myself during the year.

Get him one of those lego speed champions sets. It's cheap but it's also a really fun gift cuz you can build it and keep it on your desk.

Depends. Stuff for the car is always nice, but people are very particular about what specific parts they want. A gift card to a specific shop he uses would probably be the easiest. For not-car related, I’m always excited to receive small “Gundam” related stuff to add inside my car.

Check if there are any car related events coming up in your area and surprise him with tickets is one option (drift events, drag races, etc). Also, if its in the budget, and Turo rental of a nice car would make any car guy grin.

https://mark-rogan.pixels.com/featured/the-944-blueprint-mark-rogan.html Could get a blueprint of his car and frame it. Depends if you wanted something more useful though. You could also try to find out if there’s any subsets of tools he needs: sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrench, if he does a lot of his own work. Or a toolbox if he has them but doesn’t have a good way to store/organize everything so

You could get him a gift card to a parts store he normally shops at (e.g. FCP Euro, AutoZone, etc.), or you could find a local car show to plan a date out of (e.g. Cars & Coffee + Lunch). He probably has a list of ideas in his head of parts/tools he wants to buy, so you could ask him generally what he wants/needs to do to the car to find out what parts store he would need to buy from. My mom always tells a story about how she got my dad to talk about an exhaust he wanted to buy so she could surprise him for Christmas. He genuinely had no idea and just thought she wanted to learn more about it.
