Help: Moving to UK, do I look like a restricted breed?
Posted by Training-Quiet3545@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 136 comments
Hi, I’m moving to the England at the end of the month and I want to bring my sweet boy with me. I was told he is an Andalusian Terrier (Spanish Terrier/Sherry Terrier) mix. He’s 28.1kg (62lbs) and I’m wondering if he’s mixed with some type of hound or another type?..Airlines have strict breed restrictions and I want to make sure he isn’t one of the restricted. Let me know what you think!

DearDegree7610@reddit
What are the airlines restrictions?
In terms of UK law this dog is 1000% legal and not banned or restricted in any way whatsoever.
Just depends what it is that the airlines are saying they won’t get involved with

What kind of dog is that plz? If I were to have a dog I’d like a similar type 🙏

Ah no worry bro! Fine looking hound anyways!
DearDegree7610@reddit
I’ll msg you what it is and at least u know what you’re looking for. Im interested in speaking about it but the rescue brigade on here won’t let me

Mum is Akita x Rottweiler x Husky
Dad is GSD x Rottweiler x Husky.
We’re making a stable line, and eventually solid breed, of protection/guarding/sporting dog with high endurance and spitz aesthetic. Hoping to come out with something like a beauceron but higher stamina and a bit more spitzy looking.
My Mrs knows far far far more about it all than I do.
james9483@reddit
Handsome chap!
DearDegree7610@reddit
Absolute prince!! Didn’t quite have the temperament we were aiming for but getting the absolute royal treatment in his home on a Welsh farm.
His brother was the success of the litter and exactly what we were trying to achieve with the pairing.
He’s into his sport now, v likely prospect as a top tier competitor and an excellent addition to the program!
If you see a new breed emerge that looks like this as a sort of bull herder lurcher type - you know where it’s come from!
SnooComics2637@reddit
do you talk about children the same way?
Bizniz84@reddit
People don’t often breed children to work, which would be the key difference.
You’re over thinking it. Whilst it sounds weird, I know a show dog judge and she would talk about a dog the same way, but the love for them is still undeniable.
abovetopsecret1@reddit
I think people are breeding kids that specifically DON’T want to work! Maybe we need to encourage working kids 😂
Theallseer97@reddit
Na we definitely don't, I know your joking (I hope) but let's not go back in time again ey?. Workhouses and kids in chimneys is not it.
abovetopsecret1@reddit
Be nice for a few of them who have left school to actually want to work instead of pleading “mental health” due to lockdown and claiming benefits!
man_onion_@reddit
Yes, I do wonder why a global pandemic, the likes of which we haven't seen in 100 years, unprecedented periods of months-long, legally-mandated isolation, interrupting the education, socialisation and formative years of children and teenagers worldwide, particularly with the NHS having months to years long waiting lists for substandard mental health support, would give a whole generation lasting mental health issues.
What a weird take on a post about a dog on an aeroplane, my dude.
Theallseer97@reddit
I feel like wanting to slave away at any job you don't actually enjoy for shit pay and even shittier bosses is an insane mindset to have 😂. And 'just get another job' is bs because the majority of minimum wage work is wank. I love my trade so I enjoy working and gladly put in overtime but I flipped between job seekers and min wage till I was 22. I've worked retail, customer service and a variety of positions in the catering industry. Every single one made me want to off myself 😂. Got into plating/welding and haven't looked back. 6 years on and Ive woken up everyday looking forward to going to work. The above min wage pay also helps ngl.
auntie_eggma@reddit
What a strange mental leap to make.

DearDegree7610@reddit
Why don’t any of the downvoters actually comment and have it out with me if they’re so sure they’re in the right!? Maddening.
There’s a weird “righteous brigade” with dogs that cant back up any of their aggressively protected views (anything outside their view is pursued and hunted like heresy), will never ever ever have a reasonable discussion where both people learn but instead use the mechanics of any given social media platform to group together and snap you in half.
Mummadart@reddit
They're gorgeous, what breed are they?
DearDegree7610@reddit
Every time I talk about it just get blasted with downvotes for some reason. If you’re interested happy to chat about it between ourselves privately

DearDegree7610@reddit
Precious arent they hahaha.
Yours would not be in any way shape or form of interest to the police or border force.
Only concern would be weight/breed restrictions of the particular airline you choose.
Unlikely to fall foul of any breed restrictions unless they have any restrictions on terriers/bull terriers. Only thing I can think of would be weight and temperament and of course documentation (just rabies jabs and the like - not family tree/pedigree papers)
illtakeontheworld@reddit
Your pups are so cute!! I love them😭
sowhatifitsathroaway@reddit
Breed-wise, you’re fine. I’d be more concerned about how your pup would fly all the way in to UK - my understanding is direct flights, the dog is in the gold - and that could be very traumatising with noise/turbulence. My friend flew her dog to the UK and chose to fly to France instead as the dog could be crated in the main bit of the plane with her, and then they hired a car to do the euro tunnel as the dog then also stays with you in your car (unlike the ferry where they remain in the car alone - again, not nice after a plane ride).
evenstevens280@reddit
It baffles me that Eurostar doesn't allow dogs on the England <-> France line.
Dogs are allowed on trains in the UK
Dogs are allowed on trains - even Eurostar trains - on the continent
But they're not allowed on that one specific journey. It makes travelling with animals unecessarily difficult if you're not a car driver, as you're not allowed in the Eurotunnel/Le Shuttle WITHOUT a car.
So the only option you have is to hire a car, or get ferry as a foot passenger... but getting to Dover without a car and a dog is also hard.
MotherofTinyPlants@reddit
There is a man-with-van type service who shuttles animals on Eurotunnel. It’s a pretty sweet set up where the owner rides in the back beside their pet:
https://lepetexpress.com/services/pet-shuttle-to-and-from-uk-and-france/
DearDegree7610@reddit
What a belting hustle for that guy. Thats genius, Im happy for him that he have thought of that and made it happen.
fireflyfire@reddit
OP's dog is too big to fly in-cabin, it will go in the hold regardless. No need to scare monger about flying in the hold either. It's heated and pressurised, the captain is aware there are live animals on board. Specific regulations mean the pet has a large crate with space to move around and stretch out. Millions of pets fly safely this way every year. There is also a dedicated team at Heathrow who look after incoming pets.
DearDegree7610@reddit
The most reasonable comment on the thread
Training-Quiet3545@reddit (OP)
Thank you for touching on the point of his weight because this was exactly what I was informed from the airlines I spoke to. I contacted the Heathrow Animal Reception Center and they provided my current travel plan as it is the most common and proven to be successful.
ScaryButt@reddit
He does seem a little overweight!
RandomHuman369@reddit
Apparently Irish Ferries are now doing a Dover-Calais route and allow dogs up top - they have a dog lounge. I haven't looked into it, but that's what I've heard through word of mouth.
monkeymidd@reddit
Also Brittany Ferries allow them , Caen to Portsmouth
s1pp3ryd00dar@reddit
Pont Aven from Bilbao to Portsmouth.
But pet "area" is tiny. Kennels not good for dog's stress and pet friendly cabins are booked up fully long in advance unless you grab a cancellation. (friends of ours would take their Great Dane in a 4 berth bunk bed cabin! There's barely room for two people let alone a huge dog accompanying them!)

I was definitely looking into this, as this is a concern for me that I have been speaking to his vet about. Do you know what airline your friend chose? Choosing direct flight pet cargo was a last resort decision as all the commercial airlines I contacted did not provide in cabin animal service to international destinations. I contacted a few smaller companies and they were booked out through the summer. Truly grateful for any recommendations you have!
MotherofTinyPlants@reddit
This company will take you & pup on Eurotunnel as a sort of taxi-shuttle service (great for non drivers):

nothenight@reddit
No, you look like a sweet baby angel
lydbev@reddit
I don't think this looks like any of the banned breeds here. Airlines don't really have much say in what breed your dog is, it would be the police if anyone. But as a general piece of advice, I'd get pet insurance that includes third party cover, Dogs Trust offer this as part of their yearly membership. I worked there for years in the legal dept, DM me if you have any questions!
bvh85@reddit
Nope! You'll be just fine with your dog
Kaitlynn123456@reddit
Guys has that dog got a really short dick or.....
moistpishflaps@reddit
Nope. Looks like a very good boy with no warrants or shady dealings
He may enter
s1pp3ryd00dar@reddit
Just going to say my dog looks very much like him but smaller 14kgs 😂 (he's a Spanish rescue so probably a similar breed mix). He should be fine. Easier if you have a EU pet passport (If you revisit the EU with your dog, I strongly advise to keep their EU passport up to date). Just follow DEFRA's rules to the exact letter with the vaccines and worming, and don't rely on your foreign vet as their information maybe out of date or they use the wrong worming tablets (DEFRA do change rules every now and again).
Eurotunnel's website has good up to date info on pet travel into UK that's more easy to understand than the UK government website: https://www.leshuttle.com/uk-en/travelling-with-us/travelling-with-pets/pet-travel-requirements
Unlike Europe pets to the UK are not allowed in cabins and UK airports aren't really set up for pets (no uncaged pets in main terminal etc). Airlines restriction on breeds (Iberia and Lufthansa) I've seen relate to breeds that do not cope well with the stress and breathing issues of being in cargo holds. So usually any flat nosed dog with that have breed specific-breathing issues (brachycephalic)Like pugs.
dreadheadedtv@reddit
Not sure where you are coming from but we successfully imported our 2 cats and 1 (Very Large) Dog from the US to the UK (via Amsterdam)
My wife was the driving force behind this and wrote a very detailed post about how we achieved this which I will link [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/greatpyrenees/comments/149gl3c/this_sweet_boy_just_flew_across_the_ocean/jo5o7rs?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

dreadheadedtv@reddit
Thanks so much he is a wonderful friend and he has absolutely thrived with the relative dog freedom in the UK. So I really hope your pup enjoys it here as much as Magnus does

Look at the boy! Such a good dog
CONKERMANIAC@reddit
He looks 80%+ like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier which are nowhere near the banned dogs list.

Timely_Atmosphere735@reddit
Where are you coming from?
If Europe, and you are having issues with airlines. How about coming by Eurotunnel or ferry? Might cost a bit more, but they might be less restrictive.
Training-Quiet3545@reddit (OP)
I will be flying out of the US into London Heathrow. I will most likely use American Airlines pet embark or British Airways equivalent service. They do not fly breeds:
Affenpinscher, American Bully, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer (All breeds), Brussels Griffon, Bulldog (All breeds), Cane Corso, Chow Chow, Dogue De Bordeaux, English Toy Spaniel, Japanese Chin, Lhasa Apso, Mastiff (All breeds), Pekingese, Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Pug (All breeds), Shar Pei, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel
He is mixed, and there was some concern at the veterinarian office that he has characteristics of a Pitbull Terrier. They recommended I reach out and ask to avoid the chance he could be put down for resembling a pitbull. Unfortunately I don’t have time to do DNA testing to verify. He has some characteristics that caused them to worry, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask around.
Fearless_Tea_662@reddit
I wonder what their reasons are for some of these.. like Shih Tzus for example, toy spaniels... that must be because of their frequent health issues rather than any kind of aggression issues surely...
ayeayefitlike@reddit
Brachiocephalic breeds typically have breathing issues. If the plane ends up depressurised for some reason, or the dog for whatever reasons gets upset and overheats, they are at much higher risk of breathing issues. It’s nothing to do with aggression.
Fearless_Tea_662@reddit
You know I never thought Shih Tzus or toy spaniels are Brachiophalic, I knew for the pug. I think cause they have so much floof I didn't really think about their faces being flat but they are of course. Just so much more obvious in a pug.
ayeayefitlike@reddit
Pugs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, King Charles Cavalier spaniels, English bulldogs, Boxers, Boston terriers… the list goes on. Most of them are on the no fly list there! But yes the pug is often the worst.
buy_me_lozenges@reddit
Have you checked https://www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain
You do need to provide a pet travel document.
There are extensive procedures for rabies vaccines and proof of a rabies test - this is significant https://www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain/rabies-blood-tests
Neddlings55@reddit
The UK doesnt care about DNA testing.
Its about what the dog looks like and it if fulfils the minimum of 60% of the characteristics.
Its not just the airline you need to consider, but the fact you are importing a dog to another country that has breed restrictions. The ariline isnt following UK legislation, but their own rules, hence how many deformed/flat faced breeds they wont deal with.
What is his breed listed at on all his paperwork? THATS what matters.
No one on here can confidently say he wouldnt be classed as a banned breed at all. He definitely has a bull breed mix look about him. What the US deem to be PB type and what the UK deem to be PB type are VERY different too.
Fun-Explanation-8278@reddit
I’m not sure but I just wanted to say he’s lovely.
Training-Quiet3545@reddit (OP)
For airlines that fly animals as cargo on a direct flight snub-nose dogs, dogs considered bradycephalic (small skulls I guess) and have a list of breeds that they will not fly. I know he would be fine to fly but I wanted to make sure he doesn’t appear to be a pitbull terrier as I know they are illegal there.
Swanky-Badger@reddit
Brachycephalic dogs have many health issues, breathing difficulties being the main one. I assume they are not willing to take the higher risk of death in transit.
cloud1445@reddit
Doesn’t look anything like any of the banned dogs here.
Pedantichrist@reddit
I believe the ‘there’ in question is not the UK, but rather ‘on the list of canine features an airline will not carry as cargo’).
ileppane@reddit
UK airports will not handle pets in the same way that other European airports do and this reflects on airline policies, so part of this may be UK specific.
Pedantichrist@reddit
It can still be in the UK, but there ‘here’ referred to is the list you mentioned.
mordhoshogh@reddit
You might be aware, but in case you're not you can't fly direct into the UK with a dog in the cabin (unless it's a service dog). If you want him with you on the flight you'd have to go to somewhere on the continent and then drive or maybe get the train across to the UK. Pets can only travel in the hold on flights into the UK.
Sm0keytrip0d@reddit
I'll be honest I don't know if he'd be restricted on airlines or not.
I did however just want to say he looks like a very good boy 😁
(I'm sure you actually got your answer at this point thanks to others being more helpful lol)
JonathnJms2829@reddit
Dog would be OK but make sure you leave the AR-15, grenades and bazooka at home, those will not be allowed here. You won't need a bullet proof vest over here either. Hope that helps hun x, shared in Slough group.

Cheesefriequeen@reddit
I flew our American Bulldog (not xl) from Atlanta to Heathrow with United Airlines when I moved to the UK. He needed a large crate as he was considered brachycephalic and was flown in cargo. No one asked questions about his breed as it was already on his paperwork.
Your pup looks like a mix of all the good boy and shouldn’t have any issues. Safe travels!
Training-Quiet3545@reddit (OP)
Thank you so much!!
mturn3r@reddit
If you are sending as cargo rather than as carry on, you would need to look for a local freight forwarder who specialises in moving pets as you will not be able to arrange directly with airlines. They will also know many of the current requirements that are in place.
I work for Turkish Airlines cargo and sending pets from the UK to the States has become difficult in the last 12 months so I would assume them moving the opposite direction would be the same currently.
Your breed is not on our banned list however if they are classed as a snub nosed, a heat embargo might be in effect. For us, this means any temperatures over 27c at any of the airports would mean we are unlikely to accept.
Training-Quiet3545@reddit (OP)
Yes I currently am working with a team that has shipped animals to the UK successfully. There’s so much paperwork that goes into this and it is overwhelming to a person that has no frame of reference. Thank you for your advice!!

foundalltheworms@reddit
I know everyone is saying it doesn’t look like a restricted breed but they determine it off measurements. I’d have a look on the rspca website. I’d say this just in case you piss someone off and they try to report you - you have the comfort of knowing no one will be taking your dog off you for being a restricted breed. DNA wise, the UK doesn’t care though, they don’t do that to determine a restricted breed.
WillingCharacter6713@reddit

ukulelefish1@reddit
Spanish terrier or sherry terriers (which aren't a recognised breed in the UK anyway) are not on the DDA list in the UK. Other people are right that it's largely determined by characteristics rather than genetics which you can access by looking on the GOV.UK website.
There will be general travel restrictions - pet passport/animal health certificate, microchipping (legal requiremeny by 8 weeks old in the UK anyways), certain vaccinations (rabies etc) and may require a quarantine.
Key point is to ask your veterinarian and check Government resources online to determine exactly what you need to do to make sure you and your pet have a smooth journey.
Strange_Mouse_4573@reddit

Pedantichrist@reddit

DuraframeEyebot@reddit
No?
We have like 5 restricted /banned breeds. Dogo Argentino, American Pitbull, Fila Brasiliero, Tosa Inu and I think those ridiculous XL Bullies now.
I think. I'm too idle to look.
That doesn't look like any of them.
Superb_Application83@reddit
He looks like a very well mannered boy! ❤️
gayjay-jpg@reddit
So the UK breed restrictions are quite vague in how they're upheld, as others have said he should be fine to fly, but since the recent XL bully ban over here they don't really check for breed, they check for height, weight and characteristics.
Here's a link to the RSPCA website with more a more detailed breakdown. https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/endcruelty/changingthelaw/bsl/xlbullies#:~:text=The%20minimum%20height%20for%20an,no%20further%20assessment%20is%20needed.
gayjay-jpg@reddit
Also additionally here's the link to the UK GOV website with their official confirmation standard.
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/official-definition-of-an-xl-bully-dog/xl-bully-conformation-standard
If your boy doesn't meet the height requirements first and foremost, you should be absolutely fine.
Erebus0123@reddit
